Create a scene in Photoshop with a castle under the siege of dark forces

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a scene with a castle that is under a siege of dark forces in Photoshop.

This lesson relates to the average level of difficulty, and some steps may be difficult. Let’s try.

Note: This lesson is done in Photoshop CС – so some screenshots may differ slightly from previous versions of the program. Some brushes are only available in this version of Photoshop CS6 or higher.

OK, let’s get started!

The final result:

Step 1

Create a new document with the following dimensions 900 x 1284 px, the background color is black. Using the Clouds brush or the Clouds filter, add a cloud effect. In the screenshot below, I also outlined the areas where the main elements of the scene will be located. Notice the clouds drawn around each patch.

Add a Clouds effect to the top and right bottom of the scene using the Clouds brush.

Step 2

In this step, we will work on the castle. Open the original image with a lock in Photoshop. Select part of the image of the castle, as shown in the screenshot below.

Copy / paste (Copy / Paste) highlighted part of the castle on our working paper, placing the castle on the left side of our scene. Use a soft eraser to remove excess areas of the lock. Next, using the Crack brush, use it as an eraser to add cracks to the lock.

In this way, we create the feeling that the castle is collapsing.

To the lock layer, add the following adjustment layers as a clipping mask.

Black-white (Black White)

Levels (Levels)

Curves (Curves)

Using the Particles brush, add small particles around the castle.

Step 3

In this step we will work on the land. Open the original image with a dark forest in Photoshop. Highlight the texture of the ground.

Copy / paste (Copy / Paste) selected part of the image of the earth on our working paper, located at the bottom of our scene. Using tool Free transformation (Free Transform Tool), apply scaling as well as perspective to the texture of the ground.

Using a soft eraser, process the top of the texture of the ground to combine the image of the earth with the background and the image of the lock.

To the layer with earth, add the following adjustment layers as clipping masks.

Black-white (Black White)

Levels (Levels)

Result at the moment lesson.

Step 4

Open the original image with a cross in Photoshop. Select the part of the image that is shown in the screenshot below.

Copy / paste (Copy / Paste) selected part of the image of the cross on our working paper, located in the lower right side of our scene.

To the cross layer, add the following adjustment layers as clipping masks.

Black-white (Black White)

Levels (Levels)

Curves (Curves)

Next, using the Crack brush, using it as an eraser, add cracks to the cross, as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 5

In this step, we will work on the image of the model, turning it into a supernatural being.

Open the original image with the model in Photoshop. Highlight the image and then copy / paste (Copy / Paste) selected image of the model on our working paper, placing it above the image of the cross. Apply scaling. Using an eraser, remove the forearm, and also apply the Crack brush on the back.

View of cracks when zooming back model.

To the model layer, add the following adjustment layers as a clipping mask.

Black-white (Black White)

Levels (Levels)

Curves (Curves)

Using filter Clouds (Cloud) and free transformation tool Deformation (Warp), add a wing from the cloud to the back of the model.

In this video tutorial, you can learn how to deform the cloud in Photoshop.

Step 6

Open the original image with the Fire texture in Photoshop. Using tool Lasso (Lasso Tool) with feathering (feather) 40 px, highlight the next part of the Fire texture.

Copy / paste (Copy / Paste) selected fragment of the texture of Fire on our working paper, and then change the blending mode to Lightening (Screen).

Add flames around the model image. Using a soft eraser, delete the areas that are highlighted in the screenshot below.

Using the same technique, add flames around the image of the castle.

Step 7

Next, using the Birds brush, paint the birds in the following areas of the picture, as shown in the screenshot below. Decrease Opacity (Opacity) brush, up to about 40%, so that the birds were barely noticeable.

Using a soft white brush, add a gentle light over the front doors of the castle.

Next, using the Light Effects brush, add light rays emanating from the castle doors.

Now add an adjustment layer. Brightness / Contrast (Brightness / Contrast) on top of all other layers.

Result at the moment lesson.

Next, I performed the color correction using the adjustment layer. Color Balance (Color Balance).

And we have completed the lesson! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and it was useful for you.

Thank you for being with me. Until next time, have a great day!
