In this lesson you will learn how to create a fantastic illustration with a superhero. In the process, we will combine stock images and create light effects.
Create a new document of any size and fill it with white. Open the Background image. Click C to activate Crop tool (Crop), and select the part of the background, as shown below.
Right-click on the selection and select Crop to complete the action.
Via Move tool (Move) (V) drag the photo onto the document with white background. If necessary, adjust the size.
Name the crater layer “land”. Now let’s remove the stones in the foreground. We use Polygonal Lasso tool (Rectangular lasso) (L) with 20 feathers to create a selection on the left side of the document.
Click Cmd / Ctrl + J to copy the selected area to the new layer. Move on Edit – Transform – Flip Horizontal (Edit – Transform – Flip Horizontally) and move the selection to the right to hide the stones.
Hide the background layer (white), then press Cmd / Ctrl + Shift + Alt + E to merge all the visible layers (“land” and “remove pile”). Name the new layer “land 1” or whatever you like.
Open the photo of the sky. If you can’t download it from the Photoxpress site, you can take another one. A dark, gloomy sky with a dramatic atmosphere is best suited. We use Rectangular marquee tool (Rectangular selection) (L) with a feather of 20 (depending on the size of the image) to highlight the top of the sky.
Via Move tool (Move) (V) drag the sky onto the working document, reduce its size and place it below the “land 1” layer, but above the “land” and “remove pile” layers. Name the layer with the sky “sky 1”.
On the layer “land 1” add a mask and black soft brush remove the sky.
Duplicate the “sky 1” layer, apply Flip horizontal (Flip horizontally) and move it to the right, as shown below.
Call the copy “sky 2”. Add a layer mask and delete some areas to make the sky look like one.
To make the colors look more harmonious, we will create an adjustment layer. Move on Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Hue / Saturation (Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Hue / Saturation) and convert the adjustment layer into a clipping mask for the layer “land 1” (Cmd / Ctrl + Alt + G).
In this step we will work a little more on the background. Create a new layer at the very top of the layers panel. Soft brush (B) (color # 373939) paint over some areas of the sky. To achieve the best result in the process of work, adjust the opacity of the brush.
Change layer blend mode to Multiply (Multiplication) and reduce the opacity to 80%.
Create a new layer (Cmd / Ctrl + Shift + N) and activate brush (B) (color # 9f9e99). Paint over the left side of the sky, the crater and a small area to the right to make them brighter. Set the blending mode to Soft light (Soft light) with 100% opacity.
To make the center of the sky darker, use a brush with color # 373939. On the new layer, paint this area, then change the layer blending mode to Multiply (Multiplication) with an opacity of 50%.
Open the image of the explosion and, using Move tool (Move) (V), drag it onto the working document. Hit Cmd / Ctrl + T to transform it as shown below.
Change the blending mode to Screen (Clarification) with opacity 100% and add layer mask . Soft black brush (B) remove hard edges outside and inside the ring of fire.
Call this layer “burning circle”.
Create a new layer and use it as a clipping mask (Cmd / Ctrl + Alt + G) to brighten the ring. Soft brush (B) (color # fda25c) paint over the ring and change the blending mode to Hard light (Hard light) with 100% opacity.
On the layer with the ring, create a selection on the left side using Lasso tool (Lasso) (L). Click Cmd / Ctrl + C to copy the selected area. Above, create a new layer and click Cmd / Ctrl + V to paste the copied area. Apply Flip horizontal (Flip horizontally) and move this fragment to the right. Using a layer mask, remove hard edges.
Now add a glow around the ring of fire. Create three new layers under the ring. Paint each layer with a brush (color # fda25c), as shown below. Change their blending modes to Soft light (Soft light) and Overlay (Overlap) with different levels of opacity.
In this step, we will create a light coming up from the ring. Duplicate the layer with the ring and move the copy to the very top of the layers panel.
Apply Filter – Blur – Motion Blur (Filter – Blur – Blur in motion).
Duplicate this layer and use Move tool (Move) (V) to move both copies slightly higher. Call them “light 1” and “light 2”.
If necessary, you can erase the excess.
On a layer with a crater using Lasso tool (Lasso) (L) create a selection (feather = 15), as shown below. Copy the selected area (Cmd / Ctrl + C).
Create a new layer at the very top of the layers panel. Click Cmd / Ctrl + V to paste the copied area onto this layer (as we did in step 7).
Name the layer “ground” or whatever you like. Adjust the edges with a layer mask to make a piece of earth look like inside a fiery ring.
Change the blending mode to Multiply (Multiplication) with opacity 70%.
Open the Crack image. Move it to the working document, adjust the size and transform, as shown below.
Change the blending mode of this layer to Soft light (Soft light) with 100% opacity. With the help of layer masks we get rid of hard edges.
In this step we will add fire to the cracks on the ground. Create a new layer at the very top of the layers panel. Take brush (B) (color # fbe29d) is very small (about 2-3 px) and draw inside the cracks. Set the layer blending mode to Overlay (Overlap) with opacity 100%.
You may not see much change, but don’t worry, we will fix everything now. Call this layer the “burning effect”. On the same layer, press Cmd / Ctrl + G to place it in the group. Change the blending mode of the group with Pass through (standard group blend mode) on Color dodge (Brightening base) with 100% opacity.
Now we see the changes:
Click the right button on the “burning effect” layer and select Blending options (Overlay options).
And the result:
Rename the group to “burning effect”.
Open the image with a man. Cut it in any convenient way, adjust the size and place it in the center of the working document.
To change the colors of the model, use Hue / Saturation adjustment layer (Hue / Saturation) in clipping mask mode (Cmd / Ctrl + Alt + G).
To add a glow around the model, create a new layer above. Hold down the Cmd / Ctrl key and click on the thumbnail of the layer with the person to load his selection.
Move on Select – Modify – Feather (Allocation – Modification – Feathering) and set the feathering to 1. Then turn Edit – Stroke (Editing – Stroke).
Change the blending mode of the layer with the stroke to Overlay (Overlap) with opacity 50%.
Call this layer “glowing stroke 1”.
Create a new layer and activate brush (B) (color # ef8d0e). Click F5 to open the brush settings panel.
Carefully draw a brush along the contour of the legs of the model.
To make the effect brighter, right-click on the layer and select Blending options (Overlay options).
Call this layer “glowing stroke 2”.
Create a new layer and activate soft. brush (B) (color # fbcb9c). Increase the size of the brush and draw spots on the model, as shown below.
Change layer blend mode to Overlay (Overlap) with opacity 100%.
Call this layer “glowing light”.
Duplicate the fiery ring layer, then delete the duplicate mask (right-click on the mask and select Delete Layer Mask (Remove layer mask)). Move the copy to the very top of the layers panel and call it “light 3”.
Apply filter to this layer. Motion blur (Motion Blur), with parameters from step 9.
Move the rays higher.
Add a mask and use a soft brush with opacity and pressing 30% to blur the areas shown below.
Duplicate this layer and move it a little lower. Call the copy “light 4”. Brush with opacity 100% remove the upper part.
Open the image with a stone.
Move on Edit – Define Brush Preset (Edit – Define a brush) and write the name of the new brush.
We return to the working paper. Create a new layer above the rest, take brush (B) and find our new brush. Set foreground color to black.
Hit F5 to change the brush options.
Draw a brush inside the light rays.
Duplicate the layer with stones (Cmd / Ctrl + J).
Above, the stones are less illuminated, so we will add layer masks to both duplicate and blur the upper stones a little.
To add bulk to the stones, we apply a layer style. Click the right button for each duplicate and select Blending options (Overlay options).
In point Direction (Direction) choose Down (Down) because the stones are illuminated by light coming from the earth.
Open the image with a fireball. Drag it to the working paper, adjust the size as shown below.
Move it to one of the stones and change the blending mode to Screen (Brightening) with opacity 100%. Add a layer mask and remove the edges.
Duplicate this layer.
Select both copies and press Cmd / Ctrl + G to group them. Call the group “fireball 1”. Click the right mouse button on the group and select Duplicate group (Duplicate group). Right click on the duplicate and select Merge group (Merge group). Now this group has become an ordinary layer. Change layer blend mode to Screen (Brightening) with opacity 100%.
We continue to duplicate the fireball and place it on the stones. Also add two copies in the palm of the model. Do not forget to adjust the size of copies to match the size of the stones. In order not to litter the panel, we group all copies of the fireball.
To focus on the center of the illustration, we will fill it with a gradient. Create a new layer above all previous ones. Hit G to activate Gradient tool (Gradient), and fill the layer with a radial gradient from white to black. Line draw from the center to the bottom.
Change the gradient blending mode to Soft light (Soft light) with 100% opacity. Add a mask to the layer to remove too contrasting area on the left and slightly blur around the ring of fire.
To make the lighting effects brighter, let’s use the tool. Dodge tool (Clarifier) (O). Create a new layer, set the blending mode to Overlay (Overlap) with opacity 100% and fill it with gray 50% color.
Activate Dodge tool (Clarifier) (O), set the Range to Highlights, and Exposure adjusts between 20 and 80 percent. Below is a blend layer. Normal (Normal) to see the clarified areas more clearly. In brighter places, a high level of Exposure (Impact) was used, in less bright places – low.
Mode Overlay (Overlap).
Use adjustment layers to adjust the color of the illustration. Move on Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Gradient Map (Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Gradient Map).
Set the gradient map blending mode to Soft light (Soft light).
Selective color (Selective color correction):
Layer – New Fill Layer – Solid Color (Layer – New Fill Layer – Color):
Set the color shading mode to Color (Chromaticity) with an opacity of 20%.
Create an adjustment layer Levels (Levels) to add contrast.
In the final step, we again apply the gradient fill. Create a new layer and fill it with a radial gradient, as in step 21. Change the layer mode to Soft light (Soft light) with opacity of 80%.
Add a layer mask. Brush with opacity and pressure 100% hold on the model, then reduce the opacity and pressure to 30-40% and blur in the places shown in the screenshot.
