Create a zombie in Photoshop – Part 1

Welcome to the next lesson. In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a movie poster with a popular zombie / virus theme. First, we use a brush on top of the stock image, and finish the work by applying a texture. Each stage of the lesson is accompanied by a video, therefore, you will not miss a single stroke, but because the lesson contains complex elements of drawing, it is strongly recommended to view each part of the video of the lesson during the execution of the individual stages of the lesson. So let’s get down to the lesson.

Final result

Source materials:

1. Create the foundation of muscle flesh

Step 1

Open the stock image of the model. Crop this image as shown in the screenshot below. Next, create a new layer on top of the model layer.

Step 2

Choose a tool Brush (brush). Next, install the brush that is shown in the screenshot below. In the brush settings, select the option Broadcast (transfer), and then in the settings Control (control) set the option Pressure pen(pen pressure), as indicated in the screenshot below. Next, with the tool Pipette (Eye dropper), select a dark shade pattern from the model image and with a brush, start painting and smearing, as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 3

Do the same on the shoulder and arm of the model, as shown in the screenshot below. The next sample of the shade will be lighter, take a sample of the shade from the skin area.

Step 4

Slightly reduce the size of the brush, start brushing it in places where you think muscle tissue will split.

Step five

Next, change the shade of color to a pink hue, for example, the hue of the tongue. Also, go through the previous strokes, as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 6

Continue to add muscle fibers, as shown in the screenshot below, remember that we create a sketch and plan how the muscle tissue will exfoliate and how they will be combined. In addition to the already created strokes, draw strokes of darker tones taken from the mouth. The upper layers of muscle tissue will be lighter, for example, the upper layer of the gums has lighter shades, and the lower part has a darker base, because the deeper the flesh, the blood will have a darker shade.

Step 7

Now, take a sample of the color shade from the tooth area, then we will expose the bone and teeth areas.

Step eight

Next, we will continue to create torn edges using the same stroke technique, so muscle tissue will gain some volume and density.

Step 9

Also paint the model’s eyes with strokes, as need space for it.

Step ten

Next, add muscle fibers over the eye.

Step eleven

As we said earlier, the upper layer of muscle tissue should be light, therefore, apply strokes, as shown in the screenshot below.

Step eleven

At this stage, I decided to slightly clear the area of the eye so that it was visible a little more.

Step 13

Considering the thickness and depth of the muscle tissue, we need to paint in some areas with a light-colored brush in order to slightly expose the bone, therefore, select color samples, as shown in the screenshot below, and then draw the bone in sections according to the screenshots.

Step 14

OK, great! Now we need to sketch the same strokes on the remaining parts of the body, on the arm and shoulder. This is all for now at this stage, we have created a structure of muscle tissue.

2. Eyes

Step 1

So let’s start modifying the right eye to give it a little more sadness, for this, duplicate the original image of the model, and then create a selection around the eye, as shown in the screenshot below. Next, transform the created selection, as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 2

Slightly reduce the selected area, apply the tool Healing Brush (healing tool) to restore the gap formed after reduction.

Step 3

Further, the gap formed in the upper part we fill with a regenerating brush, apply this brush only in the area of the eyeball, without going to the dark part of the eyelashes and the corners of the eyes, otherwise a dirty spot may turn out.

Step four

For the remaining gaps, we will apply the tool Stamp (clone tool), restore the entire section, as shown in the screenshot below. At the bottom of the eyeball, I left a small patch of white, suggesting that it was a tear.

Step five

Great, now, let’s select the right eye, and then copy and paste the copied image onto a new layer. Next, displace the duplicate eye in the left face area, placing it on top of the original left eye.

Step 6

Next, apply a small Distortion (Distort), as shown in the screenshot below, and then using an eraser to remove the area around the eye, leaving only the eye itself.

Step 7

Next, select the tool Stamp (clone tool), set the brush size to 6px.

Step eight

Now, apply a stamp to slightly correct the eye, as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 9

Create a duplicate layer with the eye. Rotate the duplicate, then, using the eraser, hide the upper part, so we got a round pupil. Finally, with a stamp, slightly correct the white part of the eyeball.

Step ten

So, combine both layers with the eye. Choose a tool Finger (smudge tool), the tool settings are shown in the screenshot below. Next, with the Finger tool, smudge the eye so that it looks like an infected eye.

Step eleven

Next, reduce the brush size to about 4px and with the Finger tool, add more details.

Step 12

Now we can turn on the visibility of the muscle layer. Next, we will perform color correction to the layer with the created eye.

Step 13

Next, apply an adjustment layer to the eye layer. Levels (levels), apply the settings that are shown in the screenshot below.

Step 14

Let’s remove the site that is listed in the screenshot below.

Step 15

Select a color tone sample, then with a brush, paint strokes away from the eye.

Step sixteen

Next, choose a lighter shade.

Step 17

At this stage, I decided to redo the muscle tissue on top of the eye, so I removed the tissue a bit, as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 18

Next, take a sample next to the correction area, and then draw muscle tissue, as shown in the screenshot below.

Step nineteen

Choose a brush, set the settings that are shown in the screenshot below.

Step 20

So, let’s go to retouching around the eye and make a small correction, let’s get rid of the smudges that we created at the initial stage, when we put the finishing touches. Next, let’s move on to the next step.

3. We continue to strengthen the details

Step one

Let’s continue to add detail to the face, by enhancing the edges and retouching of the shapes and adding color shades necessary to add volume to the muscle flesh.

Step 2

Hide obvious blemishes, remove muscle fibers.

Step 3

Let’s expose the roots of the teeth, color samples can be taken from the same teeth.

Step four

Let’s continue retouching at the borders of muscle flesh to create the depth of the flesh.

Step five

Now, let’s draw eyelashes that are preserved around the eye.

Step 6

In this place, let’s create a shadow for the left eye, which is surrounded by muscle tissue. To do this, create a new adjustment layer to the layer with the left eye as a clipping mask. Apply the settings shown in the screenshot below.

Step 7

Fill the layer mask of the correction layer with black color, thus correcting the correction layer Levels (Levels) will disappear. Next, select a soft white brush and with this brush, paint over the layer layer mask over the corner of the left eye, as shown in the screenshot below.

Step eight

Now, we will retouch the muscle fibers to give them shape, because the fibers should be attached in the best way to the rest of the muscular flesh, and we will also correct the flesh itself.

Step 9

Correct the areas of the flesh that require further detailing or changes in muscle structure, so we complete this stage of retouching and detailing. Do not forget to watch the video at each stage of the lesson.

4. Detailing. Part II

Step one

For example, let’s work on the correction and detail of this area of flesh, which is shown in the screenshot below. Collect samples of color shades, as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 2

Draw a few circular seams, then take a sample of a lighter shade, paint over the painted seams.

Step 3

Next, select a brighter shade and lightly click the brush over the drawn-in finishes to complete these terrible, rotten skin joints.

Step four

Also using a light shade, add other spots as shown in the screenshot below to complete the structure.

Step five

Let’s move to the frontal region. Reduce brush size. Paint over the brush to create the details as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 6

Next, select a dark shade pattern. Add strokes between the flesh we just painted, adding details at the edges, as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 7

Next, take a sample of mid-tones from the skin. Finish the details on the surface of the skin.

Step eight

Next, select a dark shade pattern. Add more details to the surface.

Step 9

Fine! Now, let’s create a new layer. Set the blue tint and brush size, as shown in the screenshots below.

Step ten

So, draw blue veins that start from the infected area, as shown in the screenshot below, then reduce the size of the brush and draw small venous capillaries at the ends.

Step eleven

Next, change the blending mode for the capillary layer to Soft light (soft light), and also reduce the opacity of the layer so that the effect is quite gentle.

Step 12

Let’s paint the skin tissues that still connect the lesions.

Step 13

Let’s fill in this area, to do this, select a shade pattern, and then paint over it with a brush to fill the void.

Step 14

Choose a darker shade. Complete the details as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 15

Next, select a shade lighter. Do the same thing that you did in the previous steps on adjacent areas of the face to create depth and light reflections on this area.

Step sixteen

OK, great! Now let’s correct this area of the jaw. Add parts in the same way.

Step 17

Go to the neck area. Add skin snippets by pre-selecting a color tone sample.

Step 18

Next, select a darker shade to add depths, as shown in the screenshot below.

Step nineteen

For the next section, let’s draw a small hole that will go through the entire neck. Choose a light shade. Paint it as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 20

Let’s continue to add details on the remaining areas of the body.

Step 21

Do the same in the area of the shoulder, the same thing that we did with the face at the beginning. Start with a sketch, correctly determining the location of the bone and muscle tissue.

Step 22

Do the same with your hand, adding details.

Step 23

Correct your fingers by adding details that are close to the face.

Step 24

Then touch up the rest of your hand. Also add details, thereby ending this stage of the lesson.

5. Work with texture. Further detail

Step one

Next, we use a texture that will help us add more details to our work, so open the image shown in the screenshot below. Create a selection, and then move the selected image to our working document. Apply distortion and slight scaling, as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 2

Create a duplicate layer, zoom out a little, as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 3

Choose a tool Stamp (clone tool), set the size, which is shown in the screenshot below.

Step four

Using tool Stamp (clone tool), clone the textures of the meat for all the areas we drew. Then, convert the cloned texture layer to a clipping mask to the layer with the drawn muscle tissue and change the blending mode for the texture layer to Soft light (soft light).

Step five

With the help of the texture, we conducted the detailing of the drawn muscle tissue. Now, let’s do a texture correction with Levels (levels).

Step 6

And then we will correct the saturation of the texture using the correction Hue / Saturation (hue saturation).

Step 7

Great, now add a layer mask to the texture layer. Next, select the black brush.

Step eight

Being on the layer mask of the texture layer, paint over with black brush over the areas where we want to hide the texture so that the teeth and bones are visible.

Step 9

Decrease Opacity (opacity) texture layers up to 93%, and then merge both layers together.

Step ten

Now we have only one layer, we can go back and finish drawing some details. To do this, select a brush, select a shading pattern, as shown in the screenshot below. Using this brush, draw the details of the form of the alleged cartilage.

Step eleven

Set the next color shade, and also set the brush size to 18px.

Step 12

Next, use a brush to create a small shading of the bone.

Step 13

Now, draw the details on the edges of the skin, so that the transition is visible.

Step 14

Next, continue to create transitions in other areas.

Step 15

As we see, the details of the flesh delineate the appearance of the texture, and the details of the skin merge with the edge of the skin, which means the completion of this stage of the lesson.
