Create an autumn portrait in Photoshop

In this lesson, we will, step by step, create a collage of leaves of autumn colors on the face. This technique involves such functions as layer blending, layer mask, applying filters, and applying adjustment layers.

To get started, you must download the archive:

All images are free and are downloaded at once, just click on the “Download” button in the right column of the image. If there is a desire, you can share with the authors of the stock images of your work, performed in this lesson (by attaching them to the comments on the page from which the images are loaded).

Step 1

Create a new document with a size of 800×995 pixels, the background color is white. Load the first image into Adobe Photoshop and place it as follows, as shown below.

Trim the edges of the image to fit the canvas.

Next, apply the filter Filter – Artistic – Watercolor (Filter – Imitation – Watercolor).

Choose a tool Eraser tool ( E) (Eraser tool), the eraser brush is large and soft, delete the areas as shown in the image below.

Step 2

We start work on the face, and we start by loading the image into the program Adobe Photoshop. Face cut to the neck, change the size as shown below.

Choose a tool Eraser Tool (E ) (Eraser tool), remove the edges of the face as follows: select the eraser brush in grunge style (drops, scuffs), Press and Opacity change to 30%. When working with an eraser, do not go too deep, play with the tool settings, with size, opacity and intensity.

Create an adjustment layer Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Black White (Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Black and White), while turning on the Clipping Mask, so that the adjustment layer falls only on the face.

Below, in the image, you are shown a zone (red tint) where you need to remove the black and white effect in the mask of the adjustment layer.

Add the next adjustment layer Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Levels (Layer – New adjustment layer – Levels). See settings below.

We also change the layer mask as shown in the following image.

Adjust some more Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Curves (Layer – New adjustment layer – Curves).

As a result, we see what we do.

Step 3

In this step, let’s start adding leaves. Let’s load in Adobe Photoshop a stock image with leaf fall. Choose a tool Lasso Tool (L) (Lasso tool), select the area shown in the image below.

Copy the area and paste, in our document, on top of all layers. Resize and place it as follows.

Double-tap the layer to display the Layer Style window, change the settings. Blending mode – Screen (Blend Mode – Screen).

Add some more leaves to your hair by repeating this step.

Step 4

Download the second stock image with leaves in Adobe Photoshop, select the sheet shown below.

Select a sheet in any way possible and transfer (Copy-Paste) it into our document. Then apply the filter Filter – Artistic – Paint Daubs (Filter – Imitation – Oil Painting).

Change the layer blending mode to Multiply (Multiplication). After repeating the previous step, add another sheet, and place both sheets on both sides of the face.

Return to the document with the loaded green leaves and select a different leaf of the tree. Copy and paste it by changing the size in our document, then discolor Image – Adjustments – Black White (Image – Correction – Black and White).

Change the blending mode to Screen (Screen).

In the end, it should turn out like this.

Step 5

Duplicate the tree leaf layer created in the previous step several times. Without changing, leave the overlay mode. Screen (Screen). Using Free Transform Ctrl + T, for resizing and tilting layers with leaves, as shown below.

Add a few more leaves, as shown in the image below.

You can change the blending mode to Overlay (Overlap), those leaves that are indicated by red arrows, in the next image.

Step 6

All basic actions are complete. It remains to correct the color. Create a new adjustment layer on top of all layers. Vibrance (Vibrate), change the settings: Vibrance (Vibration) +100, Saturation (Saturation) +26.

Finally, the final image.
