Create an emotional autumn collage in Photoshop

?In this tutorial, I will show you how to create an emotional autumn collage in Photoshop. You will learn how to create an emotional scene using just three images. Learn how to create an autumn background and improve its light and color, as well as create lighting and depth of field. In this lesson you will learn several ways to achieve the desired result in Photoshop.

Final image:

1. Add a forest

Step 1

Create a new document through the menu. File> New (File> New) with the following settings, you can also use your settings:

Step 2

Place the image of the forest in the document through File> Place Embedded (File> Place embedded). If necessary, you can use the free transformation (Ctrl + T) to resize the image of the forest and fit it to the main document.

Step 3

Transform the forest layer into a smart object. Then go to menu Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur (Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur) and set the value Radius (Radius) 9.0 px. This will create a depth of field, as well as increase attention to our model.

Result:

Step 4

Create a new adjustment layer. Color balance (Color Balance) by clicking on the third icon at the bottom of the panel Layers (Layers). Change the values Midtones (Mid Tones) and Highlights (Light) to improve the color of the forest. I wanted to give the forest a yellow hue, but you can give your background other colors that you like. Just change the value in the appropriate way.

Result:

Step 5

Create a new layer and name it. Background Light. Set the foreground color to # 5A3F0C. Take soft Brush (Brush) medium diameter and add a point for the future source of color. I want the light to be on the right side, you can use a different position if you want.

Change the blending mode to Linear dodge (Linear Dodge) and lower Opacity (Opacity) up to 85%.

2. Add a model

Step 1

Separate the model from the background using your favorite selection tool and place it on the canvas on the left side.

Step 2

Create a new adjustment layer. Curves (Curves) as a clipping mask – on the image below the icon is highlighted in red and reduce the brightness of the model.

On the layer mask Curves (Curves) erase the areas highlighted in red light. These are areas where light falls. Use a black soft brush for this.

The result of erasing the shadows and light on the model.

Step 3

Create a new adjustment layer. Color balance (Color Balance) and adjust the parameters so that the model matches the background. Use the following settings.

Below is the result:

Step 9

Create a new layer, name it. Lighting model. Set the foreground color to # 754E17. Using a soft medium brush, paint the light areas on the model. Below you can see where the light is drawn.

Change the blending mode to Linear dodge (Linear Dodge) and lower Opacity (Opacity) up to 75%.

3. Add leaves

Step 1

Add images with leaves to our document. Use different images with leaves and place them around the model. I used four images to arrange them. You can arrange them in your own way.

Step 2

Apply filter Gaussian blur (Blur according to Gauss) with a blur radius of 4.1 pixels to each image. Don’t forget to experiment with the values. This will add more depth to the scene. Alternatively, you can use the filter Motion blur (Blur in motion) to add movement to the leaves or make them fall from the tree.

Result:

Step 3

Select all layers with leaves and group them (Ctrl + G). Change the group’s blending mode to Normal (Normal) with Pass through (Skip). Create a new adjustment layer. Color balance (Color Balance), place it inside the group and adjust the colors of the leaves to match the scene.

Result:

Step 4

Create a new adjustment layer. Curves (Curves) in the group with leaves and reduce the brightness using the following parameters:

I disguised the leaves in those areas where they are least lit. Just keep in mind the direction of the light when you erase the effect. You can use a medium soft black brush to erase the effect on the layer mask. Curves (Curves).

4. Draw Hair

Step 1

Create a new layer and name it. Hair. Set the foreground color to # f6bc41; you can also match the color from the background. Using a soft brush size of 1 px, draw light hair strands. If you don’t draw very well – you can download strands of hair and place them next to the model to attach them, or you can use the tool Refine edge (Specify Edge).

5. Final Correction

Step 1

Create a new adjustment layer. Gradient map (Gradient Map). Set the colors to # 0F34593 and # DCAC4F respectively.

Set the blending mode Soft light (Soft light). This will enhance the contrast of the whole scene and make the shadows and highlights more interesting.

Step 2

Create a new adjustment layer. Color balance (Color Balance) and change settings Highlights (Light) and Midtones (Mid Tone). I added red and cream tones. You can experiment and use your settings.

Result:

Step 3

Add a new adjustment layer Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation) and change Yellows (Yellow) meanings. I don’t want too much yellow, so I just reduced the color a little.

Result:

Step 4

Create a new adjustment layer. Curves (Curves) and lower the brightness.

On the mask of the adjustment layer, using a standard black brush, mask the effect on the right side, which is more red. This will darken what is less illuminated by the light source, most likely part of the tree.

Result:

Step 5

Create a new layer and name it. Final light. Set the foreground color to # BE355E. Now we will draw the last light source using a soft, round brush.

Set the blending mode Color dodge (Brightening Basics) and lower Opacity (Opacity) up to 72%.

Final result:

Thank you for completing this lesson. I hope you enjoyed working on the emotional scene.
