In this lesson, I will show you how to create a dark and emotional scene with a fallen angel, using various techniques of combining photos. You will work with the technique of imposing, color correction, practice with retouching, drawing, etc.
At the end of this lesson you should master some of the techniques that will improve your mastery of digital art!
Below is the final image that you can make at the end of the lesson:
Create a new document in Photoshop with the following parameters:
Open image with sky. Using Rectangular marquee tool (Rectangular area tool), select a part of the sky, then drag it onto our white canvas using the tool Move Tool (Move):
Click the second button at the bottom of the panel. Layers (Layers) and add a mask to this layer. Take a simple black soft brush to soften the sharp edges of this part of the sky.
To change the color of the sky, apply an adjustment layer with a clipping mask. To do this, go to the menu Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Hue / Saturation (Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Hue / Saturation).
To darken the sky, use the adjustment layer Curves (Curves).
Place a landscape image on top of our main document and change its blending mode to Multiply (Multiplication) with opacity 100%.
Go to menu Filter> Blur> GassianBlur (Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur) and set the blur radius to 4 px.
On the filter mask, use a soft black brush to remove the effect in the middle of the earth and create the depth of the scene:
Use a correction layer to reduce sunlight on the landscape. Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation) as a clipping mask.
On the mask of this layer, use a soft black brush to reduce the effect from the left edge of the sky.
To darken the entire scene, create an adjustment layer. Curves (Curves) at the very top:
On the mask of this layer, use a soft black brush with Opacity (opacity) 10% -30% to reduce the effect of darkening on some areas of the sky and earth:
To reduce the contrast of the darkening horizon, use a fill layer with color. To do this, go to the menu Layer> New Fill Layer> Solid Color (Layer> New Fill Layer> Color):
Decrease Opacity (Opacity) of this layer is up to 50% and use a soft black brush to erase the effect around the horizon:
Open the image with the rock. Take one stone and place it in the foreground:
Add a mask to this layer. Take a soft black brush and connect the bottom of the stone and the ground.
To darken the rock, use a correction layer. Curves (Curves).
On the mask of this layer, use a soft black brush to reduce the darkening on the right side of the rock.
To reduce saturation, apply an adjustment layer. Hue/Saturation (Hue / Saturation).
Add adjustment layer PhotoFilter (Photo Filter) to change a little color of the rock.
Create a new layer on top of all layers, change the blending mode to Overlay (Overlap) with Opacity (opacity) 100% and fill it with 50% gray.
Take the tools Dodge (Clarifier) and Burn tool (Dimmer) (O) with Range (Range): Midtones (Mid Tones), Exposure (Exponir.) About 15-20%, to clarify the light on the stone. You can see how I did it in mode Normal (Normal) and result mode Overlay (Overlap):
Separate the model from the background:
In this step, we will add more hair to the model using a tablet pen (you can use Hair brushes). Create a new layer, take a hard brush of color # 291d0f and about 10-12 px in size, draw more hair from crown to back.
Create another layer and change the brush color to # 715c3d. Draw a few blond hair strands:
Make the background and the layers-fill (under the model) invisible and press the key combination Alt + Shift + E to merge all the transparent layers (model and hair). Place the merged layer on top of the rock.
Create a new layer under the model. Take a soft black brush and draw a shadow under your feet and body (look at the original photo to determine how to form a shadow).
Use adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to darken the model.
On the mask of this layer, use a black soft brush to erase the upper part of the model, since I do not want it to be exposed to a correction layer.
Use another adjustment layer. Curves (Curves) to make the upper part brighter.
Scrub effect at bottom with brush
To reduce saturation of the model, apply a correction layer. Hue/Saturation (Hue / Saturation).
Create a new layer with the same settings as in step 14. Use the tools Dodge (Clarifier) and Burn tool (Dimmer) to clarify the light and shadow on the model:
Open the image with the wings and drag them onto the back of the model:
Add a mask to the layer with the wings. Using the pen on the tablet, work on the mask to reveal some hair on the back of the model, as shown below.
Create a new layer at the top. Activate the tool Clone stamp (Stamp) to remove unwanted parts on the wings.
Use adjustment layer ColorBalance (Color Balance) to change the color of the wings. On the mask of this layer, use a soft black brush to erase the upper part of the wings.
Apply adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to darken the wings and use a brush to mask them at the top.
To darken the junction of the wings with the back of the model, use the tool Burn tool (Dimmer)
Take the feathers and place a few pieces around the model, if necessary, use the tool Transform tool (Transform).
Add more feathers to the background and apply a filter to them. BlurGaussian (Gaussian Blur) with a blur radius of 12 px.
Add more feathers over the image; place larger feathers around the edges. Apply a filter to them. BlurGaussian (Gaussian Blur) with a blur radius of 6 px.
Select all layers with feathers and merge them into one group by pressing Ctrl + G. Change the blending mode of this group with Path through (Skip) on Normal (Normal) 100%. Create a new adjustment layer. Invert (Invert) on top of all the layers inside this group to invert the color of the wings.
To change the color of the wings, apply an adjustment layer. ColorBalance (Color Balance).
To darken the feathers, use an adjustment layer. Curves (Curves):
On this layer mask, use a soft black brush to remove the dark effect on the feathers in the middle section, where they are illuminated with light:
To darken the feathers even more, apply an adjustment layer. Levels (Levels) and with a brush, mask some parts shown below:
Create a new layer on top of all layers. Take a soft brush with color # 7f0101 and paint over some feathers and wings to give them a bloody effect.
Create a new layer and take the same brush to paint the wounds on the model’s hands and legs, and besides that there is still blood on the lips and stone. I highly recommend that you use the tablet pen in this case:
Create a new layer, take the tool Burn tool (Dimmer) to make these wounds more realistic:
On the new layer, use the same brush to draw several bloody lines falling from the wings.
Create a new layer on top of all layers. Take a hard brush with color # e3e0e0 to draw a broken circle above the model’s head.
On a new layer, take a soft brush of the same color, reduce Opacity (opacity) up to 20-30%, to give a glow effect on the edges of these half-rings.
Create a new layer and take a hard brush of the same color to draw a little light strands of hair on the head, in those places where the light from the half rings should fall.
Create a new layer on top of all layers. Change the foreground and background colors to # 7d645a and # 808080. Go to menu Filter> Render> Clouds (Filter> Lighting> Clouds).
Decrease Opacity (Opacity) of this layer to 15%.
It’s time to color the image. Create an adjustment layer Gradient map (Gradient Map) on top of all layers.
Decrease Opacity (Opacity) of this layer to 20%.
To add some cool tones to the image, apply an adjustment layer. ColorBalance (Color Balance).
On top of all layers, create three adjustment layers. Photo filter (Photo Filter).
Create an adjustment layer Vibrance (Juiciness) to enhance color.
To make the image a little brighter at the top, use Levels (Levels).
On the mask of this layer, use a soft black brush to erase the bottom of the image.
Congratulations! So you have finished!
Great work done! You should be proud to have created. Show it to your friends and colleagues.
