In this lesson you will learn how, by combining different images, create emotional photo manipulation with the mood of the post-war situation.

Step 1. Image preparation
All you have to do is pick some good photos, experiment with the tool. Free transformation/ Free transform tool and Corrective layers/ Adjustment layers for creating mood and lighting. Here are the images that are needed for the manipulations, which I called the mechanism:
Step 2. Create a new white document in Photoshop, 1200 pixels wide and 900 pixels high (Ctrl + N). Open the image of the old gun.
Step 3. We will separate the gun from the background. To achieve this goal we will use the tool Pen/ Pen tool. Activate the tool Pen/ Pen Tool in the toolbar. Start highlighting the outline of the image with a pen by clicking on the picture to make the anchor point:
Step 4. Continue on the contour until the path is closed; a thin line appears around the image:
Step 5. When the path is closed, right-click on it to open the command menu for the contour. Select Create selection/ Make Selection. Option Create selection/ Make Selection will change the outline to selection. Push Shift + Ctrl + I, to invert the selection and then Delete To remove the background:
Step 6. Open a photo with an old rusty car:
Step 7. Remove the vehicle using Pen/ Pen Tool just as we separated the old cannon. Here is the result:
Step 8. We now have two extracted images on the document. Make sure the car is located behind the gun. This means that the car layer is under the cannon layer in the layers panel. Select the layer with the old car. Now click Ctrl + T, to activate the tool Free transformation/ Free Transform Tool, which will be indicated by dots to transform around the selected image:
Step 9. When the tool Free transformationThe / Free Transform Tool will be activated, right-click on the document to show the option menu. Select Perspective/ Perspective. Click and drag a point in the lower left corner down. Look at the image of the gun to determine the prospects for the old car. Technically, the image will look like the image below:
Step 10. Distort the image a little to get the corresponding result:
Step 11. Finally, remove the unwanted parts of the car. Here is the result I got:
Step 12. Next, add the rear wheel. What should be done:
1. Take Pen/ Pen tool in the toolbar. Highlight the left front wheel by pressing until the path is closed.
2. Right-click on the document to display the command options for the contour. Select Create selection/ Make selection.
3. When the wheel is highlighted, press Ctrl + J, to duplicate it on a new layer.
4. Finally, move (press V, to activate the tool Move/ Move Tool) twin wheel to the back of the machine. Make sure the double wheel layer is under the main cannon layer in the layers panel.
Step 13. In the same way, add a second rear wheel:
Step 14. From this step, we will add wheels for the wheels. We will create discs from these gears. Since this is in a PNG file, we simply copy and paste the image into the document. We do not need to suffer with extraction, because the image itself already has a transparent background.
Step 15. Gear wheel above the wheel. Click Ctrl + T, to activate the tool Free transformation/ Free Transform Tool again:
Step 16. Transform the gear to fit the wheel run:
Step 17. Distort the gear to get the best result:
Step 18. Duplicate (Ctrl + J) the gear and place a duplicate on the rear wheel:
Step 19. We have completed this part of the car (I call this thing a car). Next, we will decorate the look of the car by adding metal textures. I used this texture for this purpose:
Step 20. Open the texture. Using tool Free transformation/ Free Transform Tool position the texture to fit the entire image:
Step 21 Duplicate the texture as needed. Scale and place duplicates where necessary. Remember to mask some unnecessary parts of duplicates. Blend mode for layers Normal, Opacity 100%.
Please see the image with my result as inspiration. Not necessarily to achieve exactly the same result as mine. In this part, we can try to create different shapes from the texture.
Step 22 When you create the best shape, select all the layers with the texture and group them (Ctrl + G). Add a group Layer mask / Layer mask. Add lines to the car. Please see the illustration:
Step 23 Finally, to complete the creation of the car, I selected and duplicated the part between the front wheels and added this duplicate to the rear wheels. Please go back to the previous step 12 on how to do this.
Step 24 Here is the end result, which turned out after adding a machine gun, cut from another, intended for work, image. Please see the previous steps for using Pen/ Pen Tool, as well as on the transformation of the machine gun to match the perspective.
Step 25. Create a new document 1200 pixels wide and 900 pixels high. Open image with foggy ground. We will create a background for the scene.
After opening the image, flip it horizontally. Press Ctrl + T to activate the tool. Free transformation/ Free transform tool again. A toolbar appears above the document. Click on the chain icon and position the cursor next to the icon, when the hand icon appears, click and drag to the right to zoom in. See my result:
Step 26. Open the soil image. Convert a photo for best results:
Step 27. To blend the soil and the general background, add to the layer with the soil Layer mask and erase its top. Then reduce the opacity to 60%. Next, create a new layer (Shift + Ctrl + N). On this new layer, create a selection at the bottom of the document. We will fill this selection with a gradient. Set the foreground color to white and the background color 0b5f04.
Take Gradient/ Gradient Tool. Make sure the linear gradient is selected. Finally, fill the selection with a gradient. Add this layer Layer mask and soft round brush erase the top edge of the gradient. Set the blending mode of this layer Soft light/ Soft Light, opacity 55%.
Step 28. Create a new layer. Make the selection at the bottom of the document and fill the selection with another gradient. For this gradient, set the foreground color to white and the background color 021701. Mask the top edge and set the blending mode of this layer. Soft light/ Soft Light, opacity 100%.
Step 29. In this step we will add clouds. Open the photo. Change the picture to fit the canvas. Mask the bottom of the image. To match the color of the cloud surrounding colors, add some settings.
First go to menu Layers – New Adjustment Layer – Color Balance/ Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Color balance. Then add another adjustment layer: Hue / Saturation / Hue / Saturation. (See illustration below for settings).
Ensure that these adjustment layers are added. Clipping mask/ Clipping masks. On the Hue / Saturation / Hue / Saturation layer, erase some of the clouds.
Finally, blending mode on the layer Color balance / Color balance change to Multiplication/ Multiply with 100% opacity, and on the layer Hue / Saturation / Hue / Saturation on Lightening/ Screen with 100% opacity.
Step 30. After finishing the work on the background, copy our “car” onto it:
Step 31. Then open the image of the soldier. Separate the soldier from the background. Scale and place it on the canvas:
Step 32 Go on to add the child to the canvas. Scale and place the child in the soldier’s right hand. Add to layer with child Layer mask/ Layer mask and erase part of the child, so that it looks as if he was sitting under the hand of a soldier. Finally, add a cat.
Step 33 In this step we will work on the appearance of the child. We must do as if he were in despair. Duplicate the layer with the child. Go to Filters – Other – Color Contrast/ Filter – Others – High Pass. Take the tool Dimmer/ Burn toolbar toolbar. Soft round brush with low opacity (10-20%), treat the areas on the face, legs and other skin areas. Finally, set the blending mode Overlap/ Overlay with opacity 100%.
Step 34 Repeat the previous step for the soldier.
Step 35 Finally, to adjust the overall tone of the scene, I decided to add another adjustment layer: Hue / Saturation/ Hue / Saturation above all other layers.
Step 36 Add the destroyed building to work. Open the building image. Go to Image – Correction – Discolor/ Image – Adjustment – Desaturate. Standing on the layer with the building, go to the menu Layer – Layer Style – Blending Options/ Layer – Layer Style – Blending Option. See the picture to see the settings.
Step 37. We disguise the unnecessary part of the building. Use the scatter brush to create the effect of building destruction.
Step 38 Scale and place the building on canvas. Blur a little the building through Gaussian blurGaussian blur. Finally, add new adjustment layers to this layer: Brightness / Contrast/ Brightness / Contrast and Color balance/ Color Balance. Make sure these adjustment layers are with Clipping mask / Clipping mask.
Step 39. To complete the composition, add other buildings. Open the image of the destroyed city. Flip it horizontally. Scale and position the building. Duplicate this layer. Place the duplicate in the position necessary to complete the composition. Add a Gaussian blur/ Gaussian Blur to give depth to the image.
Step 40. Create a new layer. Fill this layer linear gradient from # 032501 to white. Then mask the bottom of the gradient layer. Finally, set the blending mode Soft light/ Soft Light, opacity 45%.
Step 41 Create two adjustment layers above all other layers. First of all, add Gradient map/ Gradient Map, mask some parts of this layer, and then set the blending mode Multiplication/ Multiply with 100% opacity. Next, add Photo filter/ Photo Filter. Mask part of this layer and set blending mode Normal, 40% opacity.
Step 42 Push Shift + Ctrl + Alt + E, to merge layers into one layer on top of all other layers. Reduce the saturation of this layer and add Gaussian blur/ Gaussian Blur with a radius of 7 pixels. Blend mode this layer is Soft light/ Soft Light, opacity 25%. Then create a new layer.
Take the tool Brush / Brush Tool. Take a very soft brush at 20% opacity. Black color areas on the scene (marked in yellow). Please see the image.
Step 43 The image is a bit dark. We will add one more Brightness / Contrast adjustment layer/ Brightness / Contrast. Finally click Shift + Ctrl + Alt + E, again to merge all visible layers into a new layer. Add a filter to this layer. Colour contrast/ High Pass filter, with a radius of 7 pixels to add sharpness to the image. Disguise the building. Blend mode for this layer Soft light/ Soft Light with 100% opacity.
Step 44. Finally, to complete this work, on the new layer I painted black, soft brush with an opacity of 15–20%, areas under the vehicle and the soldier to create shadows. Here is the final result:
Step 45. Or …. optional, but to give more drama, I added rain on the picture. I also used other wheels for the wheels:
