Create in Photoshop the collage “City on fire”

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a “City on Fire” fire scene in Photoshop. We use various elements of the scene, such as buildings, a soldier, a retro car, an airplane, and also add fire effects to complete the picture. So let’s get started!

This lesson is of medium complexity, therefore, initial knowledge of working with layers, image correction, including working with masks is necessary.

Note: This lesson is done in Photoshop CС program – therefore, some screenshots may slightly differ from previous versions of the program. Some brushes are only available in this version of Photoshop CS6.

The final result:

Step 1

Create a new document with the following dimensions 900 px * 1200 px, the background color is black. Open the original image with a retro car in Photoshop. Select only part of the image with the ground.

Copy / paste (Copy / Paste) the highlighted image of the earth on our working paper.

Place this piece of land at the bottom of our scene and use a soft eraser to shade the upper edge of the image, as shown in the screenshot below:

To a layer with earth, apply an adjustment layer. Black and white (Black and White).

Using the Cloud / Smoke brush (these brushes can be found on the drain resources), add a smoke effect over the top of the earth image. The result of the current lesson:

Step 2

Open the original image with the soldier in Photoshop. Separate the image of the soldier from the background, and then copy / paste the selection onto our working paper, placing the soldier as shown in the screenshot below. Using a soft eraser, shade the edges of the image, which are indicated by the red arrows, to align the image of the soldier with the background:

To the soldier layer, add adjustment layers. Black and white (Black and White), Levels (Levels) and Curves (Curves).

Black-white (Black and White)

Levels (Levels)

Now go to the adjustment layer mask Levels (Levels) and using a soft black brush, hide the level correction as shown in the screenshot below:

Curves (Curves)

Now go to the adjustment layer mask Curves (Curves) and using a soft black brush, hide the correction curves, as shown in the screenshot below:

The result of the current lesson:

Step 3

Open the original image with the building in Photoshop. Select only the right side of the building image.

Copy / paste the selected part of the building on our working paper. Place a fragment of the building to the right of the soldier. The layer with a fragment of a building must be below the layer with the soldier in the layers palette.

Using the Crack brush, add cracks to the image of the building.

Apply the following adjustment layers to the building fragment layer.

Black-white (Black and White)

Levels (Levels)

The result of the current lesson:

Step 4

Open the original image with the Fire texture in Photoshop. Choose a tool Lasso (Lasso Tool), in the control panel of this tool, set the value Feathering (feather) 40 px. Now select a fragment of the Fire texture, as shown in the screenshot below.

Copy / paste (Copy / Paste) selected fragment of the texture of Fire on our working paper. Add a fire effect to the building, and then change the blending mode for the Fire Texture layer to Lightening (Screen).

The result of the current lesson:

Add a couple more buildings to our scene, placing them in the background, where the red arrows point. Use the same technique that we applied earlier to the first building. Adjust the opacity of the buildings so that they are slightly darker than the first building.

Also remember to scale down the two buildings that you added:

Step 5

Open the original image of a retro car in Photoshop. Highlight the image of the car.

Add the highlighted car image to our scene, arranging it as shown in the screenshot below. Using a soft eraser, create shading at the bottom of the car.

To the car layer, add an adjustment layer. Black and white (Black and White)

as a clipping mask.

Open the Fire texture, select the next fragment of the texture shown in the screenshot below.

Now add the effect of fire to the car, and then change the blending mode for the Fire texture layer to Lightening (Screen). You need to adjust the scale of the texture of fire to the size of the car.

Also add the effect of fire on the ground next to the car, using the same technique.

Step 6

Open the original image with the plane in Photoshop. Select the image of the aircraft, and then copy / paste the selected part of the image on our working paper. Using tool Free transformation (free transform tool), flip the plane image horizontally.

Add an adjustment layer to the plane layer. Levels (Levels).

Open the Fire texture, select the next fragment of the texture shown in the screenshot below.

Now add the effect of fire on the image of the aircraft, and then change the blend mode for the layer with the Fire texture on Lightening (Screen).

The result you should have:

Finally, I applied a couple of adjustment layers. Color Balance (color balance) to add color shades to our picture. You can see the final result in the screenshot below:

So, we have completed the lesson! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and it was useful for you. See you, have a nice day!
