In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a text effect in the form of clouds in Photoshop. To do this, we will use any bold font, in combination with a textured cloud brush. We will also create a beautiful collage in the form of an Earth Day poster.
Materials for the lesson:
Download and open the Moss background image, the actual size of your working document in Photoshop will be 1600px X 1200px, 72px / inch.
Create an adjustment layer Levels (Levels), add a layer mask to the adjustment layer, and fill it in the center with a black and white linear gradient.
The settings for the adjustment layer are shown below. Levels (Levels)
Create a new layer, fill it with any color, specify Fill (Fill) 0%, add a blending option Gradient overlay (Gradient overlay)
Use the settings below for the gradient.
Then insert the image “Fireworks”. Place this layer on top of all previous layers. Adjust Levels (Levels) for this image to make dark shades darker and whites lighter. Slide the markers in the window Levels (Levels) to the center, as shown in the screenshot below.
Activate mode Quick mask mode (Quick mask mode), then select Gradient (Gradient) black and white linear and fill them with a canvas, you should see a darkened bottom.
Disconnect Quick mask (Quick mask mode), (Click on the mask icon again), you will get the highlighted top.
Go to menu Filter-> Blur-> LensesBlur (Filter -> Blur-> Blur at shallow depth of field)
Apply blend mode Screen (Screen) on this layer. You can also erase the lower lights using a black and white linear gradient on the layer mask.
Insert an image of a vase with angels.
Highlight the base and the silhouettes of the angels (I used the simple Polygonal Lasso Tool (Polygonal Lasso)), invert the selection and remove the background.
In order to add background shades to the angels layer, do the following:
- Temporarily make the angels layer invisible.
- Go to menu Select -> Select all (Select -> All).
- Then go to menu Edit-> Copy Merged (Edit -> Copy merged data) (you need to copy the entire background scene).
- Make the Angels layer visible again, go to the menu Edit-> Paste(Edit -> Paste) (paste the merged background layer above the angels).
- Merge the background layer that should cover the angels. Apply filter Gaussian blur (blur according to Gauss) (8px) for a combined background.
- Add a layer mask to the merged background layer.
- Download selection for angels (Ctrl + click on the layer icon).
- Go to menu Select-> Modify-> Contract (Allocation -> Modification -> Compress) (15-18px). Go to menu Select-> Modify-> Feather (Select -> Modify -> Feather) (15).
- Make the mask of the “United background” layer active and fill the selected area with black color.
Apply blend mode Color (Chromaticity) with Opacity (Opacity) 70%.
Right click on this layer, select Create Clipping Mask (Create clipping mask). In order to apply a background tint effect only to angel sculptures, you need to convert the layer to Clipping mask (Clipping mask).
Insert an image of a sphere with an oceanic surface.
Add a mask to this layer. Load a selection for the Angels layer and fill the selected area with black color in the mask of the Sphere layer. Adjust the silhouette of the blue sphere on the left side (to hide the angel’s leg) with a white brush.
Insert an image of ice texture. Apply blend mode Screen (Screen) to this layer. Place the layer with ice above the blue sphere, transfer this layer to the clipping mask for the blue sphere to apply the ice texture to the blue sphere only. Add a mask to the “Ice” layer. Fill it with black. Then select a small white brush and paint the pieces of ice in a layer mask. Apply the blending options to the ice layer using the settings shown in the screenshot below.
Insert an image with a green texture (figured tree or grass) above the layer of ice. Create a clipping mask from this layer for the blue sphere, as before.
Add a layer mask, fill it with black, then draw mossy tortuous shapes with a small white brush or you can use this silhouette.
Apply the following blending options to the layer:
Add a brilliant / bright effect to the blue sphere.
Download the selection for the blue sphere. Create a new layer above “Moss Shape” and fill it with any color. Apply Fill (Fill) 0%. Create a clipping mask as before.
Apply layer style GradientOverlay (Gradient overlay) to this layer
Paste the shape of the green texture again, place it above all the created layers.
Place the image with the black card silhouette over the green shape. We need this layer only to load the selection of the map silhouette. Apply the clipping mask again, add a layer mask to the green shape.
Load the map selection and delete this layer or make it invisible, go to Select-> Inverse (Select -> Invert).
Go back to the layer with the green shape, make the layer mask active and fill the inverted selection with black.
You should get a green map form over the blue ocean sphere.
Apply the exact same layer styles for it as for the moss shape at the bottom of the sphere.
Finally, in order to create a hint of the blue glow of the ocean over the sphere, load the selection for the blue sphere, create a new layer, fill it with any color, apply Fill (Fill) 0%.
Apply Drop shadow (Shadow) to this layer:
To create a text effect from the clouds, enter text in any smooth bold font.
Right-click on the text layer and select Convert to shape (Convert to shape).
Open the tab Paths (Outlines) through the menu Window -> Paths (Window -> Outlines)
Duplicate the outline, drag the outline icon onto the small icon. new path icon (New outline) at the bottom of the palette. We need a second circuit to use it separately from the white text in the following steps.
Make the text layer (white) invisible (do not delete it, we will use it later). Create a new blank layer. Click the tab Paths (Contours) and make the contour active.
Download the brush. Take Brush tool (Brush), select the brush “Bottom Cloud », size 160px.
Then select Direct selection tool (Arrow). Place the tool on the contour, right-click and select Stroke path (Run the outline of the contour).
Select Stroke path (Outline the contour) with Brush tool (Brush) check the box Simulate pressure (Simulate pressing), click “Ok”.
Here is the result of the use of “cloud brushes”.
Duplicate this cloud layer to make the clouds more visible and clear, and then merge both layers with clouds to get one.
Return to text form. Duplicate and rasterize the duplicate (right-click on the layer, select Rasterize (Rastrirovat)).
Go to menu Filter-> Blur-> Gaussian Blur (Filter -> Blur-> Gaussian Blur) (8px).
Merge the blurred text layer and the cloud layer
Install Fill (Fill) 0% for this layer. Apply blending options Bevel and Emboss (Embossed), Pattern overlay (overlay pattern).
Use a cloud pattern pre-installed in Photoshop.
You can use a different color for the parameter. Bevel and Emboss (Embossing), to get different clouds on the background (bright blue, for example, or gray, etc.).
Download the selection for the created cloud text, then create an adjustment layer. Levels (Levels). You should automatically get a corrective layer mask, as in the screenshot below.
Adjust the adjustment layer using the screenshot below (play with the level settings if you use a different background for the clouds).
Create a new empty layer again, make the text outline active.
Make active Brush tool (Brush), select another cloud brush.top_cloud ». Then take Direct selection tool (Arrow) to apply the outline stroke as before. Right-click on the contour and select Stroke path (Run the outline of the contour).
You will receive a new cloud texture layer, slightly different from the previous one due to the brush settings.
Load the selection of the original text layer (do not make it visible, just Ctrl + click on the icon of the text layer). Go to menu Select-> Modify-> Contract (Allocation -> Modification -> Compress)
Go back to the menu. Select-> Modify-> Feather (Select -> Modify -> Shade) Radius (Radius) (5px).
While holding the selection, add a mask to the new layer with the cloud texture. This action should leave only the clouds inside the outline for the new layer visible and make the text easier to read, and the clouds more visible.
Load a selection for a layer mask with a second cloud and create an adjustment layer. Levels (Levels) again.
Below are the settings for the new adjustment layer. Levels (Levels).
If you need, you can correct or even improve the text effect of the clouds. Add a new blank layer. Take the second cloud brush (play with the brush size and other parameters) and go over the new layer above the cloud layers where you want to make the text readable, visible, voluminous, etc. … You can see the masked spots in the clouds with a brush in the screenshots below.
Here is an additional way to fix a cloud text effect: Group all the layers with a cloud effect. Add a mask to the group. And go over the layer mask using a translucent cloud brush (~ 50%) to fix the text silhouette. Below you can see the areas of the mask with corrections.
The cloud text effect is done, but you can add real clouds to the composition. Open image with clouds. Duplicate the background layer, go to Image menu -> Auto Contrast (Image -> Auto Contrast). Duplicate the corrected layer again.
Make the second duplicate black and white, Image -> Correction->Black White (Image -> Correction -> Black and White).
Open the tab Channel (Channels) on the layers palette. Duplicate one of the channels.
Adjust Levels (Levels) for duplicate channel
Ctrl + Click on the thumbnail of the adjusted channel to load the selection for the white clouds. Make the RGB channel active.
Go back to the layers palette. Hold the selection, delete or make invisible black and white layer. Make the auto contrast layer active and copy the selection.
Insert the selected clouds in the composition “Earth Day”. Apply blend mode Screen (Screen).
Select a part of the clouds (just select a small group of clouds and select it with the tool Polygonal lasso (Polygonal Lasso)).
Paste them on a new layer, place them so that you get the best layout and composition, apply blending mode Screen (Screen) for added clouds.
Finally, you can merge all the layers.
Duplicate the merged layer. Go to menu Image->Correction->Variations (Image -> Correction -> Options). Marker marked options.
Apply blend mode Color (Chromaticity) with Opacity (Opacity) 40% to this layer.
And here is the result!
