Fabulous winter in Photoshop

In this Photoshop tutorial, we will create a photo manipulation with a fabulous winter, sparkling icicles and a crescent moon above the clouds.

Materials used in the lesson:

Create a new document with by permission (resolution) 180 pixels per inch 2000 high pixels and 1600 wide pixels You can choose a different size for your work, but some of the options listed in this lesson will depend on the size and resolution.

Place the mountain landscape at the top of the document.
Add adjustment layer Selective color correction (Selective color). I always use adjustment layers such as Selective Color Correction, Levels, Color / Saturation … How to work with adjustment layers you can find out here, or simply work with the menu Image – Adjustment … (Image – Adjustments …). For example, in this case we need to go to the menu Image – Correction – Selective color correction (Image – Adjustments – Selective Color) and apply the following settings.

Place the second landscape at the bottom of the working paper.
On this image are visible ropes. To get rid of them, create a new empty layer and draw lines over the ropes. Use plain white brush (Brush) and hold down the Shift key so that the lines are smooth.

Load a selection in the form of drawn white lines (Ctrl + Click on the layer thumbnail). Now the layer with lines can hide the visibility or even remove it.
With the active layer on which we have to remove the ropes, we go to Editing – Fill – With content (Edit – Fill – Content Aware).

Use Eraser (Eraser) with a soft brush to erase a clear layer boundary and make a smooth transition between the two landscapes.

When the result suits you, you can merge these two layers.
Activate the mode Quick masks (Quick Mask), then go to the menu Editing – Fill – Black (Edit – Fill – Black Color). You should get a red mask on the image.

Take a round soft Brush (Brush) white and create an outline like in the image below, using a large soft brush for the areas ahead.

Exit Quick Mask mode . You will get a selection on the image.

Via Levels (Levels) adjust the selection, Image – Correction – Levels (Image – Adjustments – Levels).

Create a new layer and fill the selected area with white. Hide the visibility of this layer, it will be useful to us in the following steps.

Activate the mode again. Quick masks (Quick Mask). Fill the mask in black and white. gradient (gradient) so that the white color is at the top.

Exit the quick mask mode to get the highlight selection on top of the image.

For the selected area, apply the following settings. Levels (Levels).

Bring visibility back to the white areas.

Set the blending mode to this layer. Dissolution (Dissolve) and opacity (opacity) 50%.

Merge this layer with a blank and set it to overlay mode. Overlap (Overlay).

Set the opacity to this layer. 15–20%.

Erase the top of this layer with a soft Eraser (Eraser). I marked it in red in the image below.

Add a bokeh image to the working document.

Set it overlay mode Screen (Screen).

Add a layer mask and hide the bokeh on the mountains.

Via Levels (Levels) adjust the bokeh layer.

Insert a lock into the document, separating it from the background.

Activate mode Quick masks (Quick mask).
Fill the mask in black and white. gradient (gradient) so that the white was to the right.
Exit the Quick Mask mode to get the selection of the lower right corner of the lock.

Apply the following Levels settings to the highlighted part.

Add adjustment layer Gradient map (Gradient map) to the image of the castle with clipping mask (clipping mask). Set the opacity to the adjustment layer 88%.

Use these colors for Gradient maps:

After all the steps we get the following result:

Now you can merge all layers into one and duplicate this layer. With the active copy of the layer go to Image – Auto Contrast (Auto Contrast). Set the opacity to this layer. 85%. Add a mask and fill it with black and white gradient (gradient) (white color at the bottom and black at the top).

Add to the working paper image of the month.

Adjust the month with Levels (Levels) and Color balance (Color Balance).

Duplicate the month layer, set fill (fill) 0% and add a layer style Inner shadow (Inner shadow).

Settings for this layer style:

Hide the visibility of the layers with the month. Next, go to Selection – All (Select – All).
Thereafter Edit – Copy Combined Data (Edit – Copy merged).
Create a new layer above the layers with the month and paste the copied background onto it. We go to Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur) and apply a blur 10 – 18 pixels
Next, go to the menu Image – Correction – Color / Saturation (Image – Adjustments – Hue / Saturation) and slightly reduce saturation.

Also adjust a bit Levels (Levels) for this layer.

Make the layers with the month visible again. Download the selection in the form of the month. With active selection, add mask layer (mask) to a blurred background layer. Set this layer overlay mode. Hard light (Hard light).

Soft brush (brush) on the layer mask, erase all excess areas, except for the selected part, as shown in the figure below.

Add an image of icicles to the document.

To remove the black background, go to Selection – Color Range (Select – Color range). Pipette click on the black background.

We go to Selection – Invert Selection (Selection – Invert selection). Apply the function Refine edge (Refine edge).

Icicles are separated from the background.

Select a part of the icicles and paste them on a new layer. For a while, hide the visibility of the original layer with icicles.

I copied this part with icicles.

To change the shape of icicles, I go to Edit – Transformation – Warp – Arch (Edit – Transform – Warp – Arch). At this point do not yet complete the transformation.

To edit the corners, use Incline (Skew).

Erase the areas shown in the image below to make the icicles smaller and adjust the top edge.

And we get the following result.

Duplicate the icicle layer and apply a filter to the copy of the layer. Ocean waves (Ocean ripple).

Apply to this layer Auto contrast (Auto contrast) and change the blending mode to Light replacement (Lighten) install opacity 70%.

Duplicate the icicle layer again, set up the duplicate layer. fill (fill) 0% and add layer style Inner shadow (Inner Shadow). Create a layer mask and fill it with a black and white gradient, as indicated by the arrow in the image.

Create a new layer and draw blue textures on it in places where the icicles touch the month. Use the tool Stamp (Stamp tool) with a small brush. Take a sample for cloning from the month by holding down the Alt key.

Using this technique, you can create icicles on the top of the month. But I placed small fragments to fill the whole bend with them. I copied the individual icicles from the original image and placed them on the top edge of the month.

To make the icicles more radiant and transparent, set the blending mode Screen (Screen) and add layer style Inner shadow (Inner shadow).

Here are some more icicles with layer style. Inner shadow (Inner shadow). You can adjust their shape with Eraser (Eraser).

Adjust Levels (Levels) for this layer with icicles.

Even more icicles using the same technique.

Add a big icicle to the top of the month, and also apply a style. Inner shadow (Inner shadow).

Adjust Levels (Levels) for this icicle:

Add clouds to work, separating them from the background.

Add a layer of clouds style Inner shadow (Inner shadow).

And adjust Color balance (Color balance).

Add a second cloud and also work with Color balance (Color balance).

Duplicate the second layer with the cloud and set the fill (fill) 0%.

Add style to this layer. Inner shadow (Inner shadow).

Paste the third cloud into your working paper.

Adjust Levels (Levels):

Download the selection in the form of a month and icicles. To do this, hold down Ctrl + Shift and click on the layer thumbnails.

We go to Edit – Copy Combined Data (Edit – Copy merged). You completely copy the month and the icicles.

Paste the copied onto the new layer.

Add style to this layer. Internal glow (Inner glow).

Now download the selection only in the form of the month, already without icicles. On the new layer, fill the selected area with the same color used for the internal glow.

After that, merge the silhouette of the month and the blue glow with a new blank layer.

We go to Edit – Transformation – Flip Vertically (Edit – Transform – Flip vertical). Place this reflected layer below the month.

We go to Edit – Transformation – Distortion (Edit – Transform – Distort). Modify the transformation points as shown in the image below.

Click on this layer with the right mouse button and select Convert to smart object (Convert to smart object). Add a layer mask (mask) and fill it with black and white gradient (gradient) to make the lower part of the shadow more transparent.

Activate Quick mask mode (Quick mask mode) and again use black and white gradient (gradient), as in the image below.

Exit Quick Mask Mode and apply a filter. Gaussian blur (Gaussian Blur) to the selected part of the shadow of the month.

Add adjustment layer Colour (Solid color) to the shadow of a month and set the adjustment layer overlay mode Colour (Color).

We go to Selection – Select All (Select – Select all).
Edit – copy merged data (Edit – Copy merged).
Paste the whole image into a new layer. Next, go to Image – Auto Contrast (Image – Auto contrast).

Duplicate the merged layer, apply an adjustment layer to the copy of the layer. Black and white (Black and white) with the following settings:

Set the black and white layer overlay mode Multiplication (Multiply) and opacity 24%.

Load the selection of the entire image again, copy merged data (copy merged) and paste this layer as new. Apply filter Glare (Lens Flare) to this layer.

You can change the opacity of this layer to adjust the intensity of the filter.

You can also add an image of stars to make the work more interesting.

Adjust Levels (Levels) for the inserted layer.

Set the layer with the stars blending mode Screen (Screen).

Download the selection according to the shape of the month and erase the stars that hit it.

And here is the result!
