In this tutorial, we will look at how some Filters work, using the Layer Style, as well as using collage elements and manipulating the Blending Modes.
As a result, the lesson we should get this job.
Materials for the lesson:
Step 1. Create a new document (Ctrl + N), 800×600 pixels.
Find a photo with the road.
After you open the desired photo in Photoshop, place it in your document and adjust it in size (using Free transformation Ctrl +T). Name this layer “Road”.
Step 2. Now you need a picture of a person.
Highlight the human figure tool “Pen” (Pen Tool (P)). After you finish the selection, go to Paths Palette palette and click on the iconLoad contours as a selection (or just press Ctrl + Enter).
Then go to Layers – Layer Mask – Show Selection (Layer> Layer Mask> Reveal Selection), All that will be outside the selection will be hidden.
Name this layer, for example – “Guy”.
Step 3. Enter the menu: Editing – Transforming – Scaling (Edit> Transform> Scale), either just click Ctrl +T and holding the keyShift, reduce the size of the guy. Then go to the menu: Editing – Transform – Flip Horizontal (Edit> Transform> Flip Horizontal), or, right-click on the transformation frame and select there – Flip horizontally.
Step 4. Now you need to darken the shape of the guy a little, so that it matches the surrounding background. For this we use Curves (Curves).
Enter the menu: Image – Adjustment – Curves (Image> Adjustments> Curves (Ctrl +M)). For this work, we used the following settings (they may differ slightly):
Step 5. Hold down the Ctrl key and click on the layer mask thumbnail on the layer “Guy”, a shape selection appears. Without removing the selection, create a new layer. (Shift +Ctrl +Alt +N), rename it to “Shadow from the Guy” and fill the selection with black (D, Alt +Backspace). Deselect Ctrl +D.
Enter the menu: Editing – Transforming – Distorting (Edit> Transform> Distort). Moving the frame of transformation, achieve that the shadow lay on the asphalt.
And the last in this step. Enter the menu: Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur).
* The author has a lesson in the lesson radius of 8 pixels. But for example, I only needed 1.3 pixels to achieve the same result, so adjust the radius at your discretion *
Step 6. Choose a tool “Ellipse” (Ellipse Tool (U)), in Contours mode. Create a circle as shown below. To turn the circle even, hold down the keys Shift +Alt and stretch the shape to the desired size.
Then take the tool Arrow (Direct Selection Tool (A)) and change the shape of the circle, as in the screenshot.
Step 7. After the shape is ready, create a new layer and apply the Cloud filter: Filter – Rendering – Clouds (Filter> Render> Clouds).
* You may have to apply the Cloud filter several times in order to achieve the desired arrangement of black and white color inside the “shape”. To make the colors brighter when repeating the filter, use the keyboard shortcut Alt +Ctrl +F*
Go to the Outlines palette and create a selection (by clicking on the Load outline as selection), or just – Ctrl +Enter. Mask the layer (by clicking on the Mask Layer icon, in the Layers palette, everything outside the selection will disappear).
Step 8. Click on the thumbnail of the cloud layer and go to the menu Filter/ Plastic (Filter> Liquefy (Shift + Ctrl + X)). Choose a tool Bloat Tool (B) set the following brush settings:
Brush Size – 550 (size may differ, the main thing is that it fits the size of the figure)
Brush Density – 100
Brush Pressure – 100
Brush Rate – 60
Turbulent Jitter – 75
Then check the box Extra options you should have – Use:All layers. This will allow you to see both the clouds and the background, this is necessary in order to use the tool Bloat Tool (B) in the right place.
Click a few times, with a long press on the figure, and then uncheck the box Extra options. You will see the result of the impact of the tool, modify the volume, once again clicking on the shape of the ball several times in the right places and apply a filter.
Step 9. Change layer with clouds, Overlay mode to Soft Light.
Then create a new layer. (Shift +Ctrl +Alt +N), rename it to “Clouds 2” and repeat steps 7 and 8, thus the volume will be deeper. Change this layer overlay mode to Multiply (Multiply).
Create another new layer, rename it to “Clouds 3” and repeat steps 7 and 8, only this time change the Overlay Mode to Brightening basics (Color Dodge). After you change the blending mode to the last layer, the ball will be lightened up a lot, which is not necessary at this stage. To remove the extra brightness, do the following:
(The author suggests using Eraser (Eraser Tool (E)), I suggest using a Layer Mask.)
Go to the thumbnail Layer Mask on the “Clouds 3” layer and a black brush with low Opacity and Hardness, just paint over what you think is superfluous. The bright light on the figure of the Guy, some bright spots that cover most of the panorama behind the ball, in a word, leave only some interesting highlights on the ball. This layer will give a contrast to the ball.
Step 10. Group the layers with Clouds (select the layers with Clouds and click Ctrl + G ). Then go to Layer – Layer Mask – Show All (Layer> Layer Mask> Reveal All). Choose a tool Brush Tool (B), color Black and zakraste those places where the ball is in contact with the asphalt. Also, you can reduce the Brush Opacity and walk in some places on the ball itself.
Step 11. Expand the Group with the clouds (by clicking on the arrow next to the Group miniature). go to the “Clouds” layer (the first layer with clouds) and apply to it Filter – Sharpness – Sharpness + (Filter> Sharpen> Sharpen More). Repeat this filter (Ctrl +F) on layers Clouds 2 and 3.
Step 12. Create a new layer, below the Cloud Group layer, fill it with White color, rename it to “Glow”. Then go to the Outlines palette. Load the selection of the shape we made from the clouds in the 9th step (by pressing the Ctrl key on the layer thumbnail Work path, in the Outlines palette). Return to the Layers palette and mask this layer (by clicking on the Mask Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers palette).
Call the Layer Style window (by clicking on the “Glow” layer two times). In Layer Style, set the fill Opacity 0% , External glow – leave the default settings in it. Apply Layer Style.
Then go to Layer – Layer Style – Create Layer (Layer> Layer Style> Create Layer), either simply clicking the right mouse button on the layer style and selecting there Form a layer. This command forms an independent layer from the Layer Style (Glow layer).
* You can delete the layer with the white shape, leaving only the layer “Glow layer”. *
Step 13. Put this layer in a group (while on a layer, press Ctrl + G), rename the group to “Lighting”. Add a layer mask to the group (Layer – Layer Mask – Show All (Layer> Layer Mask> Reveal All)). Take the tool “Brush” (Brush Tool (B)), The color is black, the opacity is medium and fill in all the excess. We need to leave only the contour of the ball illuminated, but maybe some bright areas in the middle of the ball will look very good.
Step 14. Create a new layer below the “Clouds” group layer. Take the tool “Oval area” (Elliptical Marquee Tool (M)). Drag the selection as shown below. Fill it with black (D, Alt +Backspace), reduce the layer opacity to 40%. Deselect (Ctrl + D).
Step 15. Add a layer mask to this layer. Then take the tool “Gradient” (Gradient Tool (G)), select Black and White gradient. And mask the layer as shown below (for this, just drag the gradient along the entire length of the shadow, from left to right).
Step 16. Duplicate the layer with the shadow from the ball (Ctrl + J), apply the Layer Mask (right-click on the Layer Mask and select there Apply Layer Mask). Or, the menu: Layer – Layer Mask – Apply (Layer> Layer Mask> Apply). Now apply Free Transformation (Ctrl +T),right click on the transform frame, select there Distortion, this is necessary in order to put a shadow in the same direction as the shadow of the guy. Group these two layers (hold down the Ctrl key, select two layers and press Ctrl + G) and rename the group to “Shadow”.
Place the Shadow group, below the Illumination Group, in the layers palette.
* in the screenshot, the ball was dark, and then became again with light areas, perhaps the author simply turned off the visibility of the “Lighting” layer in order to more accurately position the shadow *
Step 17. Create a new layer, above the road layer. Apply to this layer Filter – Rendering – Clouds (Filter> Render> Clouds). Then apply Filter – Distortion – Zigzag (Filter> Distort> ZigZag), set Degree – 100, but Folds – 5, Style – “Circles on the water”.
Call it Circles on the water.
Step 18. Apply Free Transformation – Distortion (Ctrl +T). Distort the layer so that the waves lie in the correct perspective, in relation to the asphalt.
Then change the Blend Mode (Blend Mode) to Overlay.
So, as we used the Cloud filter, then when changing the Overlay Mode, it is possible that undesirable spots on the asphalt appear, use the Eraser to remove them.
Step 19. Create a new layer (above all layers). Use the Oval Region tool (M) to create a selection, as shown below. Fill the selection with Black. After this, create another selection, smaller in the middle and delete the selected part. (Delete). Tool “Magic wand” (Wand Tool (W)), Click on the resulting “ring” shape to select it.
Step 20. With the active selection of the “ring” from step 19t, go down the layers palette to the layer Road. Without removing the selection, duplicate the layer Road (Ctrl +J).
Now you can delete or hide the layer with the “ring”; we will no longer need it.
To the resulting layer “Road (copy)”, apply Layer Style – Emboss (Layer Styles> Bevel and Emboss).
Depth – 231
Direction – Up
Size – 5
Mitigation – 16
Angle – 39
Height – 21
Gloss Contour – According to Gauss
Opacity – 100%
Opacity – 79%
* these settings are very individual to the form, so do not be afraid to experiment. You may have to change such parameters as: Depth, Size, Gloss Contour*
Step 21 Go to the menu: Layer – Fill Layer – Gradient (Layer> New Layer Fill> Gradient). You will have a window, do not change anything, just press YES. Then the following window will appear – Gradient fill, in this window already change:
Gradient Color (by clicking on the gradient bar and changing colors there with #DDC396 before # 2F1E00)
Style change to Radial.
After that, change Blend mode layer with gradient on Brightening basics (Color Dodge).
Place this layer above all layers.
* If after changing the blending mode, the picture becomes too bright, you can slightly reduce the opacity of the layer, as well as return to the Clouds and Lighting groups, and change (darken or lighten) the ball itself, adjusting the Mask Layer of these layers. *
Step 22 Now find a picture with the image of clouds, it is better if the clouds are some interesting colors, and not banal white-blue.
The author chose the piece he needed in the photo and framed it.
Place this image above all layers and change its blending mode to Overlap (Overlay).
Step 23 Now we will work on some areas a little. To begin, darken the back, our boyfriend. Take the tool “Dimmer” (Burn Tool (O)), in the tool settings set Range: Mid Tones and darken Guy’s back.
Then change the “Circles on Water” Layer Blend Mode to Soft Light (it’s not obligatory).
You can also go back to the “Clouds” and “Lighting” groups and work with the clouds inside the ball.
Step 24 Create a new Group, below the Guy layer. Name the group “Strength”, change to it the Overlay mode to Brightening basics (Color Dodge). Then create a new layer in the group, take “Brush” (Brush (B)), White color, size 30-35 pyex., Opacity 20-30%, Hardness 0%. And draw this brush a kind of glow, making its way out of the hands of the guy.
* by layering colors, try to make the transition from transparent to bright white, on the palms *
Create another layer in this group. Use brushes to add more effect (don’t forget to adjust the Opacity of the brush itself). Apply to this layer Layer Style – Pink External Glow Layer (Pink Outer Glow Layer Style).
Step 25. Find a photo with a truck, well, if it is depicted on a uniformly light background (the angle and position of the truck in this photo are also not unimportant). Place it below the Strength Group layer.
Magic wand (Magic Wand Tool (W)) separate the truck from the background. Invert the image (Shift + Ctrl + I), then use the function Refine Edge (Refine Edge(Ctrl +Alt +R)). Smooth jagged edges. Then, press Ctrl + J, in order to copy the result. Remove the bottom layer with the truck.
Apply Free Transform – Flip Horizontal (Edit> Transform> Flip Horizontal (Ctrl +T)). Decrease (by holding the Shift key) and place the truck in the correct position, relative to the road.
Step 26. Slightly darken the truck to match the overall picture.
Go to the Menu: Image – Adjustment – Curves (Image> Adjustments> Curves (Ctrl +M)).
Then take the tool Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) and make a selection, a little more than the truck itself.
Go to the Menu: Filter – Blur – Radial Blur (Filter> Blur> Radial Blur). Install Power – four, Method – Annular, Quality – The best.
Without removing the selection, apply the following filter.
Menu: Filter – Blur – Motion Blur (Filter> Blur> Motion Blur). Install in it: Angle – -75, Bias – 3 pixels.
Deselect (Ctrl + D).
* these settings will be different for everyone, the main thing is to achieve the sensation of what is predmer far from us (by blurring) and in motion, from what seemed to be thrown away (by blurring in motion) *
Step 27. Now you need the shadow of the truck.
To do this, hold down the Ctrl key and click on the thumbnail of the layer with the truck (truck selection will appear), create a new layer (Shift + Ctrl + Alt + N) and fill the selection with Black. Place this layer below the truck layer, apply to it Free Transform – Distort (Edit> Transform> Distort (Ctrl +T)) and distort the shadow in the right direction relative to the ground. Apply to shadow layer Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur). Change this layer to Opacity to 60%.
Step 28. Select the layers – the truck and the shadow from it, and press Ctrl + G, rename the group to “Truck”. This is what the layers palette looks like at this stage of work.
And here is the final result of the author.
You might want to add that from yourself, for example, more objects flying from the ball. But do not forget about the curves, they will help to change the lighting of the objects themselves and then the objects inserted into your work will look more realistic in the overall picture.
Do not be afraid to experiment, move away from the lesson itself. You can have a different arrangement of layers, the number of layers themselves, some other effects, the main thing is that you get the result you need.
I wish you good luck in execution.
