Girl in the night

In this tutorial, we will create an illustration of a girl, paint her hair, using the texture, add the effect of scattering particles, create our own brush with petals.

Note: The author of the lesson used Photoshop CS6, so the screenshots with the editor interface will be different from earlier versions of the editor.

Step 1

Create a new document (Ctrl + N) with a size of 724×1024 pixels with a black background. Open the metal texture in Photoshop and tool Rectangular area (Rectangular Marquee Tool) (M) select its part.

Tool Move (Move Tool) (V) transfer part of the texture to the created document. Activate Free transform (Ctrl + T), right-click on the canvas and select the mode Perspective (Perspective). Change the texture as shown below.

Choose a tool Eraser (Eraser Tool) (E) and adjust the edges of the texture.

Above the texture layer, create several adjustment layers with clipping masks (Ctrl + Alt + G):

Black and white (Black White):

Levels (Levels):

Here is what the Levels adjustment layer mask should look like:

Curves (Curves):

Step 2

Open the photo of the girl in Photoshop. Separate it from the background in any way convenient for you, transform and transfer it to our main document.

Soft eraser process the edges of the girl so that she blends well with the background. In the tool settings you need to set Opacity (Opacity) and Pressure (Flow) by 50%.

Create a correction layer for the girl Levels (Levels).

Here is what the Levels adjustment layer mask should look like:

Step 3

Now I will show how to draw hair. Create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) and draw a path with the tool. Pen (Pen Tool) (P).

Choose a tool Brush (Brush Tool) (B) and adjust as follows:

Return to the tool Pen (Pen Tool) (P) right click on the contour and select Outline the contour (Stroke Path).

In the window that appears, select Brush (Brush) and turn on the function Simulate pressure (Simulate Pressure).

Using different brush and color settings, paint the girl’s hair to get a similar result:

If the process of drawing hair causes you difficulty, then watch this video tutorial.

Step 4

Now we need to create a fog around the girl. To do this, use the filter Clouds (Clouds) in combination with a selection tool, or a cloud / fog brush. Experiment with the layer opacity so that the fog is not strong.

Select another part of the metal texture.

Copy and drag the selected part of the texture in our document and place under the layer with the girl. Create for this layer several adjustment layers with clipping masks.

Black and white (Black White):

Levels (Levels):

Activate Free transform (Ctrl + T), right-click on the canvas and select the mode Deformations (Warp).

Change the shape of the texture to create the illusion of flying particles.

In a similar way create some more flying particles.

Step 5

Now we will create a brush for drawing petals. Create a new document (size is not important), create a new layer and draw a pink circle.

In warp mode, change the shape of the circle.

Hide the background layer and go to the menu. Image> Trimming (Image> Trim) to remove transparent pixels. Then go to menu Editing> Define Brush (Edit> Define Brush Preset) to save the brush.

Go back to the main document, select the tool. Brush (Brush Tool) (B) and open the brushes palette (F5). Adjust the brush as shown below.

Form Dynamics (Shape Dynamics):

Scattering (Scattering):

Transition (Transfer):

Draw the petals as shown below. You can rotate the brush in the palette of brushes (F5).

With the help of adjustment layers, you can add some color.
