Going on a sea adventure with Photoshop

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a fun sea adventure using the sea surface effect. I will also show you how with the help of additional color shades you can increase the depth of the image. So let’s get started!

Note: in the lesson the author used paid images. In the archive you will find alternative materials from the translator.

Step 1

First, we need to create a background that includes the sky and the sea. To create the background, we use three source images that are compatible with each other. Add the original image with the sunset, placing this image at the top of our scene.

Next, pick up the image with the underwater scene. Add the original image with the underwater scene to our working paper, placing this image at the bottom of our scene.

Next, add an image with a sea surface. Place this layer between the sky layer and the underwater scene layer.

To the layer with the sea surface, add a layer mask and using a round brush of medium hardness, the brush color is black, paint over the bottom of the image. Use the outline of the water level in the image of the underwater scene as a guide.

Step 2

Next, we will focus on the sea surface. In this step, we will add lighting effects and work a little on color shades. Create a new layer as an edge mask to the sea surface layer. Change the blending mode for this layer to Soft light (Soft Light). Now, using a soft round black brush, paint over the surface where you want the water to be darker, and with a soft white brush, paint over the area where you want the water to be lighter. Do not forget about the position of the waves and the sun. Also paint it with an orange and red tint next to the horizon line. The result of the brush processing mode Normal (normal):

The result of the mode Soft light (Soft Light):

Next, create a new layer as a clipping mask to the sea surface layer on top of the layer you just worked on. Change the blending mode for this layer to Lightening (Screen). Using a soft round brush, add yellow and red shades to the horizon line.

To color shades that are reflected on the surface of the water, ideally coincide with the color shades in the sky, duplicate the layer with the sky, and then convert the resulting duplicate layer to a clipping mask to the layer with the sea surface. Using tool Transformation (transform tool), drag the top edge of the image down to get a mirror image of the sky on the water.

Change the blending mode to duplicate the sky layer to Chromaticity (color).

Next, to the duplicate layer with the sky, add a layer mask and using a soft black brush, hide the lower part of the sky, reflected on the water.

Create another new layer as a clipping mask to the sea surface layer on top of the duplicate layer with the sky. The blend mode for this layer remains the same. Normal (Normal). Using a white brush, paint over the edge of the water in the middle of the sea surface to create a water level.

Finally, create a new layer, change the blending mode for this layer to Overlap (overlay). Do not convert this layer to a clipping mask to the layer by the sea surface. Using a soft white brush, paint over the entire edge of the water level.

Step 3

Now we turn to the bottom of the picture, which consists of an image of an underwater scene. In this step we will create 3 layers, which we use as clipping masks to the original layer with the underwater scene. First we will do a little color correction with a correction layer. Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation). Transform this adjustment layer into a clipping mask to the layer with an underwater scene and in the settings window of this adjustment layer, set the following settings: put a tick in the box Toning (Colorize), Color tone (Hue) 253, Saturation (Saturation) 33 and Brightness (Lightness) -62. This correction will color the underwater scene in purple.

Create a new layer as a clipping mask, change the blending mode for this layer to Overlap (Overlay). Using a large soft brush, paint black in the corners of the underwater scene and white in the middle.

Create another new layer as a clipping mask, the blend mode keep the same Normal (Normal). Using a soft white round brush, draw curls over the entire area of the underwater scene. If you can’t draw smooth curls, then you can simply apply a filter to the drawn curls. Gaussian blur (Gaussian Blur), let’s go Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur).

For convenience, group all the water related layers. Name the new group “Water”.

Step 4

Next, we will work on the creation of a “boat”, or in this case a giant umbrella. Separate the umbrella from the background, and then add the highlighted image of the umbrella to our working paper.

Using a layer mask, hide the bottom of the umbrella.

Duplicate the umbrella layer, remove the layer mask from the duplicate layer. To duplicate an umbrella layer, add a new layer mask. This time hide the top of the umbrella. Use the water level as a guide. Blur the bottom of the umbrella with a filter. Gaussian blur (Gaussian Blur), let’s go Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur).

Create a new layer below the umbrella layer, change the blending mode for this layer to Overlap (Overlay). Using a large soft white brush, paint over the image of the umbrella.

Add a new adjustment layer Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation) on top of the layer with the top of the umbrella as a clipping mask. In the settings window of this adjustment layer, set the following settings: put a tick in the box Toning (Colorize), Color tone (Hue) 197, Saturation (Saturation) 65. Now fill the layer mask with black and with a white brush, paint over the bottom edge of the umbrella.

Step 5

Next, we will add children to our umbrella boat. Separate the image of children from the background, and then move the selected image to our working paper, placing the children inside the umbrella.

To the layer with children, add a layer mask and using a black brush, hide the bottom of the image of children. Use the edge of the umbrella as a guide. In this way, we will create a feeling as if the children are inside the umbrella.

Create a new layer as a clipping mask for the layer with children. Using a soft black brush, draw the shadows at the bottom of the image of children, as well as on the right.

Next, add a correction layer to the child layer. Curves (Curves) as a clipping mask. Pull the middle part of the curve down to darken the image of the children. Align the left side of the curve so that only the bottom and right side of the image of children is darkened.

Create a new layer below the layer with the children and using a soft white brush, paint over the heads of the children.

Create a new layer below the layer you created in the previous step. Using a soft black brush, paint over the umbrella. Use the edges of the umbrella as a guide.

Go back to the layer with the umbrella. Create a new layer on top of the umbrella layer as a clipping mask. In addition, paint over the middle part inside the umbrella with a soft black brush, behind the children, and also where the umbrella comes into contact with water.

Step 6

To combine all the elements of the composition together, we use a large number of adjustment layers to add color and atmosphere. I will show you how well you can mix and match adjustment layers to improve all changes and complete the picture. All layers with correction should be placed on top of all other layers. All adjustment layers listed below will be added as described from the bottom up. First add a correction layer. Curves (Curves):

?

Next, add an adjustment layer. Color search (Color Lookup): select setting Communication with the device (device link) and in the drop-down menu, select the color combination Blue Red Blue Yellow ’, reduce the opacity of this adjustment layer to 62%. Add another adjustment layer. Color search (Color Lookup), this time select the комбина Edgy Amber ’color combination, reduce the opacity of this adjustment layer to 43%.

Add another adjustment layer. Color search (Color Lookup): and in the drop-down menu, select the комбина Fall Colors ’color combination, lower the opacity of this adjustment layer to 61%.

Next, add an adjustment layer. Color Balance (Color Balance), set the following settings: Red (Red) 20, Blue (Blue) -15.

Next, add an adjustment layer. Brightness / Contrast (Brightness Contrast), make the following settings: Brightness (Brightness) -30, Contrast (Contrast) 19.

Add adjustment layer Fill color (Color Fill), fill color # 970000, blending mode Lightening (Screen), the layer opacity is 38%.

Group all the adjustment layers created into one group. New group name “Color Correction”

Step 7

In conclusion, we will add small strokes to give the image a complete look. Add a highlight to our scene, preferably red / orange. Place a highlight on the sky, creating the sun.

Next, with the tool Gradient (Gradient Tool) or using a large soft round brush, paint in blue (# 136186) the bottom of the scene. Change the blending mode for the layer with this effect to Chromaticity (Color). Duplicate this layer to increase the saturation. The result of the brush processing mode Normal (normal):

The result of the mode Chromaticity (Color):

The result of the duplicate layer after increasing the effect saturation:

Finally, to add more contrast, add another adjustment layer. Color search (Color Lookup) on top of all other layers. Set the color combination ‘Filmstock’, the opacity of this adjustment layer is 36%.

Hope you enjoyed this tutorial. Using this technique, you can create your own composition with a sea adventure. See you again!
