STEP 1

Create a new document (Ctrl + N) 1000 px wide by 1300 px in height and set the background color to white. These are my settings, but you, of course, can use your settings when creating a new document.

Open the stock image Lake 1. With the tool Rectangular area (Retangular Marquee tool), create a selection of a part of the image, because we don’t need to use the whole image. Press Ctrl + J to copy the selection to a new layer. Using tool Move (Move Tool), move the copied image onto our document, position it at the bottom of the document:

Name this layer “lake”.

STEP 2

Now we will remove the ladder that is submerged in water. On a layer with a lake, using any selection tool that you like best, select the area next to the stairs and select the feathering value = 1 for the selection, copy this part to a new layer. Move the highlighted area to the right to hide the stairs. Next, apply a layer mask to this layer and with the help of a soft black brush process the edges to create a smooth transition with the main image of the lake:

STEP 3

Open the stock image “Sky”. Apply the same selection technique you used in Step 1. Copy the selected area of the sky and paste it on our document, placing it at the top of the image:

Using a layer mask, brush the edges with a soft black brush to create a smooth transition:

Name this layer “sky”.

STEP four

To change the color shades and enhance the brightness of the sky so that the sky matches the background, I applied several adjustment layers to the “sky” layer as clipping masks:

Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation):

Color balance (Color Balance):

Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation):

Result:

STEP 5

In this step, we will retouch the sky to create a more dramatic effect. There are some areas in the sky that need to be darkened or brightened. First, create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N), select a soft brush, set the color to # b6bcd0 (the hue is similar with a sky tint) and paint over it with a brush, as shown in the screenshot below. Change the blending mode to Multiplication (Multiply), 30% layer opacity:

Create a new layer using a soft brush, the color of the brush is the same, paint the bright areas of the sky. Change the blending mode for this layer to Soft light (Soft light), 100% layer opacity:

STEP 6

In order to give the lake a more foggy effect, I processed the area, i.e. the transition between the lake and the sky. I created a new layer and on the new layer I applied a brush, the color of the brush # c3c7da, painting the transition area, then set the blending mode to Normal (Normal), layer opacity reduced to 80%:

STEP 7

Create a new layer on top of all layers, set the foreground color to white. I arbitrarily chose some Lightning brushes to paint lightning, lightning starts from light areas of the sky. Next, I used an eraser with an opacity of about 50% to blur the ends of the lightning so that they look realistic in the sky:

STEP 8

Open the stock image Lake 2. Cut only the mountains, and then move the image with the mountains to our document, placing it on the horizon, reduce the opacity of the layer with the mountains to 20%. Add a layer mask and using a soft black brush hide the unnecessary parts:

Duplicate the mountain layer and then duplicate it. Flip Vertically (Flip Vertical), let’s go Editing – Transformation – Flip Vertically (Edit-Transform-Flip Vertical), position the duplicate in such a way as if the mountains are reflected on the water, lower the layer opacity to 3%. You need to apply the tool Transformation (transform tool), Ctrl + T) to transform the image vertically, so that the mountains become narrower. Next, press Ctrl + U to display the settings window. Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation), reduce the brightness to -50:

STEP 9

Open the stock image of the model. I will show you how to highlight the shawl and how to make part of the dress transparent. First, apply any selection tool you are familiar with to create a selection around the model. Copy selection to new layer, name this layer “model”. Below the model layer, I created another new layer, which was filled with black color, which I could see if there were any errors when selecting the object.

If you are satisfied with the result, then it’s time to process the shawl, i.e. make it transparent.

Below the girl layer, create a background layer, I used the image Lake 1 so that you can already clearly see the result of the processing. Select the layer with the model, then press Ctrl + Alt + 2 to load the bright parts of the image. Then, press Ctrl + J to copy the selection to the new layer, lower the layer opacity to 50%. Go back to the model layer, load the light areas by pressing the Ctrl + Alt + 2 keys once again.

Choose a tool Eraser (Erase Tool (you can press the E key to activate this tool) with opacity about 70% and use the eraser within the areas where you want to remove the white background. Do not forget to carefully treat the areas, especially along the contour of the shawl and dress. Use the eraser until don’t get the look you want.

Drain these two layers.

STEP 10

In this step we will fix the missing part of the umbrella. Move the merged layer with the model to our document, apply the scaling and position the model as shown in the screenshot below.

I used the Umbrella image using the zoom option. Copy the part of the umbrella, which is shown in the screenshot below and move the copied part of the umbrella to our document, reduce the size of this part of the umbrella in accordance with the image size. Add a layer mask to the layer with a part of the umbrella, and on the layer mask apply a black brush to the edges of the umbrella to create a smooth transition with the image of the main umbrella:

To give a girl more refined features, I used a filter Plastics (Liquify Tool). Select the layer with the girl, go Filter- Plastic – Deformation (Filter-Liquify-Forward Warp Tool):

Apply deformation to the shoulders, arm, face, waist of the model so that they are more slimmer:

Result:

To the layer with the model, add a layer mask and using a black brush with a hardness of about 10%, blur the bottom of the dress. Try a semicircle brush to avoid a flat visual effect:

STEP 11

The light source will be in the upper left part of the image, the light will fall on the back of the girl, so a shadow will be created in front of her in the part on her right on the water. To do this, create a new layer below the model layer and use a soft black brush to draw a shadow on the water, as shown in the screenshot below. Reduce the opacity of this layer to 20%:

Name this layer, for example, “model shadow”.

STEP 12

Next, we will create a reflection of the girl on the surface of the water. Apply the same technique as in Step 8 and blur the reflection using a layer mask. Name the new layer with the reflection “model reflection”. Place this layer below the “model shadow” layer.

STEP 13

In this step, we will darken the area around the model. Create two new layers, place them below the model layer, change the blending mode for these layers to Multiplication (Multiply), layer opacity is 100%. Using a soft brush, set the brush color to # b6bcd0, draw with a brush, as shown in the screenshot below:

STEP 14

From this step we will create multiple layers as clipping masks for the model’s retouch. If you use your model image different from my image, then you will not need to carry out as many steps as I need. Although, I hope that with the help of my retouching technique, you will learn how to retouch the details of the image objects.

Create a new layer as a clipping mask. If you forgot how to create a layer as a clipping mask, see Step 4. I applied the tool Stamp (Clone Stamp Tool) to remove the buckle on the umbrella. If you are not familiar with this tool, then on the Internet you can find a lot of good lessons on using Stamp.

STEP 15

I was not completely satisfied with the result after applying Stamp, so I created another new layer and applied a brush, brush color # 52a2d0 to paint over the area inside the umbrella to make it a little lighter. Change the blending mode for this layer to Soft light (Soft light), reduce layer opacity to 50%.

Once again create a new layer, and apply the same color shade to the brush. I used a brush to paint over the edge of the umbrella to darken a little. Change the blending mode to Multiplication (Multiply), set the layer opacity to 40%:

STEP 16

In this step, I also used the tool Stamp, to hold a touch up girl’s hand.

STEP 17

I used two new layers to darken the skin and remove light highlights on it. Choose a soft brush, set the color of the brush with # edd9ce and paint over the light skin areas: face, neck, chest, hands, fingers. Change the blending mode for these two layers to Multiplication (Multiply), set the opacity to 50%.

As you can see on the original image, the light source is located in front of the model and the light comes from right to left. Therefore, the shadow from the hand of the girl falls on an umbrella. To fix this, create two new layers, set the blending mode for these layers to Soft light (Soft light), the opacity of the layers is 100%. I applied a soft brush, set the color of the brush to # fbb7b4 to paint over this shadow.

STEP 18

We will continue to retouch the shawl and dress. The left side of the shawl and dress must be brightened so that the light is balanced.

Create a new layer and apply brush # fbb7b4 to paint the left side of the shawl. Change the blending mode to Soft light (Soft light), opacity 100%.

Create a new layer and using soft white brushes, Draw over the left side of the dress. Change the blending mode to Soft light (Soft light), set the layer opacity to 100%:

STEP 19

Create a new layer, change the blending mode for this layer to Multiplication (multiply), reduce the layer opacity to 50%. I used a brush, set the brush color to # c08373 to paint over the hair of the model in order to reduce the light highlights on the hair.

STEP 20

Now, we will darken the exterior of the umbrella. Create a new layer, then, on a new layer, apply brush # 4aaff1 on the outside of the umbrella. Change the blending mode to Multiplication (Multiply) 60%.

Create two new layers, change the blending mode for these layers to Soft light (Soft light), opacity for one layer set to 50%, and for the other 100%. Using the # 4aaff1 brush, paint on the left outside of the umbrella to lighten.

STEP 21

So, it’s time to change the color of the shawl. Go to the model layer, apply any selection tool that you prefer to work with most to create a shawl selection. Let’s go Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Channel Mixing (Layer-New Adjustment layer-Channel Mixer) and apply the option to this adjustment layer. Clipping mask(Clipping Mask). Place this layer on top of all layers.

Result:

Click on the layer mask of the adjustment layer. Channel Mixing (Channel Mixer) to activate the selection. Let’s go Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Selective Color Correction (Layer-New Adjustment layer-Selective Color), also apply this adjustment layer as a clipping mask:

STEP 22

I use the same technique to change the color of the dress with a few adjustment layers.

Mixing channels(Channel Mixer)

Selective color correction (Selective color):

Color balance (Color Balance):

Brightness / Contrast (Brightness / Contrast):

Here’s what we got:

STEP 23

I applied several adjustment layers to change the overall color of the image of a girl with an umbrella (use layers as clipping masks).

Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation):

Selective color correction (Selective color):

Curves (Curves):

Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation):

Using a black brush, paint the girl’s face on the layer mask of the adjustment layer. Curves (Curves layer):

STEP 24

Create a new layer as a clipping mask. I applied the tool Blur (Blur tool) with Intensity (strength) 50% to soften the inside of the face to avoid facial strokes:

STEP 25

Once again, I applied a soft white brush to brighten the areas of the model to which the light falls on the background. Create a new layer, change the blending mode to Soft light (Soft light), set the layer opacity to 50%. Paint over shoulders, arm and dress:

STEP 26

Create a new layer as a clipping mask on top of all layers and select the option to fill in 50% gray (gray):

Choose a tool Dimmer / Clarifier (Dodge Burn Tool) in the settings Range (Range) set Mid tones (Midtones) and Exposure (Exposure) 50-60% to darken and lighten some parts of the model: face, nose, cheeks, fingers, dress. In the screenshot below, you can see where I applied this tool, blending mode Normal (Normal mode) I did not change it in order to show you clearly (the light areas are clarified by the instrument Clarifier(Dodge tool), and dark areas are darkened with a tool. Dimmer) and screenshot below result with blend mode Overlap (Overlay):

STEP 27

Since the main light source is located behind the model, so I use the effect Inner shadow (Inner Shadow) to add more reflective light to the model. Right-click on the model layer, select the option Overlay options (Blending options):

After we added the reflective light on the model, we need to darken the lower part of the dress, because the bottom of the light does not fall from the background. Create a new layer on top of all layers (without clipping mask). Using brush # 726f75, paint over the bottom of the dress and change the blending mode for this layer to Multiplication (Multiply), reduce the opacity of this layer to 20%:

STEP 28

In this step, I will add more strands of hair to the model. Depending on the hair style of your model, you can add different strands of hair. Create a new layer to create hair strands, I used the tool Polygonal Lasso (Polygonal Lasso Tool) to create a selection and fill color tint # 563e54:

Create a new layer as a clipping mask and apply the dimming / bleaching technique that you already applied in Step 26. Using the tool Clarifier / Dimmer (Dodge and Burn Tool), treat your hair to make it look more realistic.

Create a new layer as a clipping mask and using a soft white brush, paint over the outside of the hair strands to add more light highlights to them. Change the blending mode for this layer to Soft light (Soft light), layer opacity is 100%.

STEP 29

Open the image Water ripples. Select a part of the water ripple, then move the selected image of the water ripple to our document, scale it and position it on the water surface. Change the blending mode for this layer to Lightening basics (Color Dodge), the layer opacity is 100%, then add a layer mask to this layer to process the rough edges of the image:

Press the Ctrl + M keys to open the settings window for Curves, reduce the light value to get the result, as in the screenshot below:

Duplicate this layer many times (I created 51 duplicate layers to create the effect of water ripples, then group all these layers so that you can easily navigate), vary the scale and opacity from 50-70%, also change the blending mode to Lightening (Screen) for some layers (for water ripples in dark areas, I applied the blending mode Lightening basics (Color Dodge), and for water ripples in light areas, I applied the blending mode Lightening (Screen):

STEP thirty

Create a new layer, set the foreground color to white. Use Rain and Rain brushes No. 83 to paint raindrops on the surface of the lake. Change the blending mode for this layer to Soft light (Soft light), reduce the opacity of the layer to 70%:

You may have noticed that I didn’t draw so many raindrops around the model. I will explain this later.

STEP 31

In this step, I will create a fog effect to our model for better alignment with the background. Create a new layer, place it on top of all layers. Choose a tool Lasso(Lasso Tool (L) and create a selection around the model, set the blending value = 30:

Fill the selection with a color tint of # b6bcd0 and lower the layer opacity to 10%:

STEP 32

In this step, we will create rain. We will create rain that will go straight down, which will be convenient relative to the direction of the umbrella. Create a new layer, fill the new layer with black color. Next, go Filter- Noise – Add Noise (Choose Filter-Noise-Add Noise):

After we applied the Noise filter, let’s go Image – Correction – Isohelium (Image-Adjustment-Threshold):

Then we go Filter – Blur – Motion Blur (Filter-Blur-Motion Blur):

Next, press Ctrl + L to display the settings window. Levels (Levels):

Change the blending mode to Lightening (Screen), reduce the layer opacity to 50%:

Duplicate this layer and apply a filter to it to make the rain look softer and more realistic. So, select the duplicate rain layer, let’s go Filter – Imitation – Contoured edges (Filter-Artistic-Poster Edges):

Name these layers, for example, “rain 1” and “rain 2”. I added a layer mask to each rain layer and on the mask mask, I applied a rain blur to get a natural look (use a low opacity brush):

Because of the dome of the umbrella, the area around the bottom of the dress (on the water surface) is not so prone to raining, so I added so little ripples from raindrops.

STEP 33

In this step, we will create a wet effect for the umbrella. Create a new layer on top of the layer with raindrops and apply a brush, set the brush color to # 5e7293, set the brush hardness to 100% and paint it as shown in the screenshot below. Change the blending mode for this layer to Multiplication (Multiply), reduce the opacity to 70%. You must vary the size of the brush and its opacity, as some areas of the umbrella are wetter than others:

Apply Gaussian blur (Gassian Blur) with a blur radius of 9 px:

I created a new layer to add small rain marks on the umbrella. Choose a hard brush, the brush color is the same, the brush size is small (2-3 px) and apply a brush on the umbrella. Apply to this layer Gaussian blur (Gassian Blur), blur radius 1.5 px:

STEP 34

I want to add some drops on the umbrella. Create a new layer, I used a white brush with a hardness of 30-50% and sizes of 3-5 px and dotted the drops on the umbrella, then changed the blend mode to Soft light (Soft light), opacity 100%. Reduced Fill (fill) to 0% and applied Emboss, Inner Shadow (Bevel and Emboss, Inner Shadow) in Blending options (Blending options):

Create a new layer using the same technique, draw a tear flowing from the left eye:

STEP 35

We have finished adding elements of the composition. Now, we will color the image using corrective layers, go Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Gradient Map (Layer-New adjustment Layer-Gradient Map). Change the blending mode for the gradient map adjustment layer to Soft light (Soft light), reduce the layer opacity to 80%.

Selective color correction (Selective color):

Color balance (Color Balance):

STEP 36

The final step: create a new layer on top of all layers, select Radial gradient (Radiant Gradient), set the color from # 163653 to # f5f5f2, and drag the gradient from left to right to make it like in the screenshot below:

Change the blending mode to Soft light (Soft light), opacity 100%. Add a layer mask and brush to reduce the light on the left side of the image, as shown in the screenshot below:
