In this Photoshop tutorial tutorial, I will show you how to create a beautiful image using lighting effects and a brush. This is not a difficult effect to create, but patience is required. I used the only image that can be downloaded for free. Hope you enjoy the result.

Videoauthor’s lesson:

STEP one. Open the stock image of the girl in Photoshop, then click on the lock to unlock the layer. I used the original image size 4151X2823, but you can reduce the size of the image at your discretion. Once you have unlocked the background layer, rename this layer to “girl”, and then create a new layer and move it below the layer with the girl, name the new layer “darkness”.

STEP 2. This is the most important step in this lesson. You must create shadows on the girl’s body. If you already have some experience creating shadows and light effects, and also if you know the basic basics of working with light, then you will be much easier. In any case, I will try to demonstrate the process in as much detail as possible.

To the girl layer, create a layer mask and select the tool Brush (Brush Tool (B). Set the foreground color to black, set the brush opacity to about 50%. With a soft brush, start painting around the edges of the image so that the layer with darkness appears.

Working with a mask – the first pass:

As soon as you can, as in the screenshot above, lower the brush opacity to about 20-25% and start painting over the left side of the face and shoulder. Do not worry, if you captured too large an area, you will fix this below.

Working with a mask – the second pass:

Now, switch the foreground color to white and set the brush opacity to about 10% or even lower and start painting areas where you have too much black brushing to highlight them again. If you think that the image as a whole looks good, but you want to get a smoother transition between dark and light areas, then the best trick or trick for this is adding Gaussian Blur (Gaussian Blur) to the layer mask.

If you have some experience, then this can be a pretty quick step. When I did this for the first time, it took me about 30 minutes to get the final result, which you can see in the screenshot below.

Work with the mask – the third pass (final):

STEP 3. Since I used the full dimensions of the image, I immediately saw all the flaws in the skin of the girl, so I decided to clean my skin a little with the tool Spot Healing Brush (Spot Healing Brush Tool (J) to remove minor defects. I created a new layer, in the settings of the brush I put a tick in the window Sample of all layers (Sample All Layers) and began to paint over the defects that I saw. The changes are minor.

STEP 4. Another important step with which you can further improve chiaroscuro – Lightening / Fading (Dodging / Burning). As always, in order not to lose the quality of the image, create a new layer and fill it with 50% gray, then change the blending mode to Overlap (Overlay). (For more information about this technique, read this lesson.)

Below in the screenshot, you can see the “light / shadow distribution map” under the blending mode Normal (Normal), by which you can specifically see where I applied the brightening, and where the shadows.

On the screenshots below, Before and After the lightening and darkening process.

STEP five. The base is ready, now we can add any effects we want. I used an adjustment layer Selective light correction (Selective color) to change the overall color of the image. I only changed colors Black and Neutral (Blacks and Neutrals), other colors remain unchanged. See screenshot below.

STEP 6 You can add a touch of fantasy by creating light effects to the flowers on the crown, which is located on the girl’s head. For this, I used 3 layers and blending modes for them – Baselightening and Linear Clarifier (Color Dodge and Linear Dodge (Add). Use dark shades when using these blending modes. If the light effect you received is too light, use a darker shade.

On the layer Lighting effect 3 Brightening basics (Lights 3 Color Dodge) I used a big soft brush, here too I used a dark green shade to paint my eyes and make them lighter.

STEP 7 Next, I changed the main light using the filter Effects lighting(Lighting Effects Filter), let’s go Filter – Rendering – Effects lighting(Filter> Render> Lighting Effects). To do this, you first need to create a merged layer, to do this, select the topmost layer in the layers palette and press Ctrl + Shift + Alt + E. Apply this filter, I made the face a little lighter.

STEP 8. Creating sunshine is very simple. Just pick a tool. Polygonal Lasso (Polygonal Lasso Tool (L) and draw several shapes, as in the screenshot below and apply to these shapes Motion blur (Motion blur), let’s go Filter – Blur – Motion Blur (Filter> Blur> Motion Blur). Apply this filter several times. Value Offsets (distance) will depend on the size of your document, in my work I used an offset of 999 px and then I applied a filter several times. After that, I applied Gaussian blur (Gaussian Blur) to make the rays softer. When you’re done, lower the layer’s opacity to 20-25%.

STEP 9. To create dust particles, I used the same technique that I used in the Loneliness manipulation lesson. Select a soft brush and open the bookmark. Brushes (Brushes) by pressing the key (F5). You need to create a double brush to make a variety of shapes that will become your dust particles.

To create different shapes, check the box Form Dynamics (Shape Dynamics) and increase the value Size fluctuation (Size Jitter) to about 90%, also tick the option Scattering (Scattering) with Passay (Scatter) 1000% and value Counter (Count) to 1. Next, tick the option Double brush (Dual Brush) in the set of standard brushes, select the brush Spatter 14, as an auxiliary brush. Experiment with the settings Double brush (Dual Brush) until you get what you want. See screenshot below.

When you draw the particles, as shown in the screenshot below, apply to them Gaussian blur (Gaussian Blur) so that they look as if they are not focused. You can also apply white External glow (Outer Glow), if there is a desire.

STEP ten. Last step, but no less important, I created 2 more adjustment layers on top of all layers. I used an adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to add more contrast and then use a correction layer. Color balance (Color Balance) to add a touch of blue. In settings Color balance (Color Balance), I changed the values only in the parameters Mid tones (Midtones).

We finished the lesson. I hope you have a really amazing result. Remember that you can upload your work on our Facebook page so that everyone can see them.
