Leave your face in history 3 – Roman fresco

Your attention is the third lesson from the series “Leave your face in history”.
In this lesson we will create a Roman-style mural from our portrait.
So let’s get started …

Step 1.

To begin with, let’s look at the example of the “Roman fresco” – the result to which we will strive.

Step 2.

The texture that we will use, you can download here.

Step 3.

Create a document of size 1000×1400 pixels. and resolution 200px. Open the texture. Create a duplicate texture layer. Layer – Duplicate Layer (Layer – Duplicate Layer), rename layer to red. Duplicate the layer again rename to goldand turn off visibility for this layer.

Make the layer activered. Further Layer – New adjustment layer – color balance (Layer – New adjustment layer – color balance).

IMPORTANT: each time you create corrective layers check the box
Use previous layer to create clipping mask ” (“Use the previous layer to create a clipping mask”).

Settings: +100, 0, 0.

Further Layer – New adjustment layer – brightness /contrast (Layer – New adjustment layer – brightness / contrast).

Settings: brightness: -36, contrast: +26.

Make the layer active gold and turn on visibility.
Further Layer – New adjustment layer – color balance (do not forget about the tick).
Settings: +63, 0, -43.

Layer – New adjustment layer – brightness / contrast (brightness / contrast)
Settings: brightness: +3, contrast: +ten.

Holding the key Shift, select on the layers palette red layer and “Tied” there are two adjustment layers to it.

Further Layer – Merge Layer (Layer – merge layers).
Holding the key Shift highlight goldand two corrective layers attached to it, Layer – Merge Layer.

Step 4.

Make the bottom layer active background. Create a duplicate layer (Ctrl + J), name it light coloured.

Move it to the top of the layers palette. Create another duplicate layer, name it Gray, and turn off the visibility of this layer.

Make active light coloured.
Further Layer – New adjustment layer – Hue /Saturation (Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Hue / Saturation (do not forget about the tick).
Settings:0, 0, +32.

Layer – New adjustment layer – brightness / contrast
Settings: brightness: 0, contrast: +15.

Turn on layer visibility Gray, move it on the layers palette to the top.
Layer – New adjustment layer – Hue / Saturation (check mark).
Settings: 0, -30, 0.

Create a duplicate layer red rename to dark, move the layer to the top.
Layer – New adjustment layer – brightness / contrast (check mark)
Settings: brightness: -55, contrast: 0.

Hold down the Shift key and select it on the layers palette. light colouredand “Tied” there are two adjustment layers to it. Further Layer – Merge Layer (Layer – merge layers).
Do the same operation with gray and dark.

Save the result in a separate file format
Photoshop software (.PSD), you may need this file later.

Step 5.

Choose a portrait to work with, separate the character from the background in the most convenient way for you. Using the tool Move, drag a layer (in our case with a girl) to a paper with textures. The layer with the girl on the layers palette should be second from the bottom.

Step 6.

Choose a tool Brush , set color foreground (foreground) paint clothes in a plain beige color.

Choose a tool Erase (eraser) medium size. In the settings, lower Hardness (hardness) to a minimum. Lower level opacity / Opacity eraser up thirty%.

Add a layer mask to the layer with the girl (to do this, click on the button on the layers palette at the bottom). Erase the bottom of the portrait as shown below.

Step 7.

Now with each texture layer (except the lowest one) we will work with a soft-edge eraser.
Turn off visibility for all layers. Make the layer visible red, Treat it with an eraser, as shown below. Then turn on the visibility of the layer gold, erase the layer in some places, focusing on the picture below. And so on with all the layers.

Step eight.

Our intermediate result.

Step 9.

Click on the layer with the girl. Further Filter – Brush Strokes – Crosshatch (Filter – Strokes – Cross Strokes). Default settings.

Step ten.

Now we need a .PSD file with textures, which, I hope, you are not too lazy and saved earlier (this was discussed in Step 4).
Using the tool Move, drag layers one by one red, dark, light colouredin a document with a portrait.

Rename them to New red, New dark, New light coloured. The order of the layers, see below.

New red layer (New red)opacity level 50%
Newdark red (New dark) opacity level 77%
New light layer (New light)– blending mode (overlay mode) on multiply (multiplication)

Step 11.

Make a copy of the layer with the girl and move it on the layers palette on top of the rest. Blending mode (overlay mode) on soft light (soft light). Opacity level 65%.

Make active the bottom layer with the girl, Layer – New adjustment layer – color balance. Settings: -100, 0, +63.

Step 12.

Using the Move tool, drag layers out of the texture document. gold and Gray. Using a soft eraser, erase most of these layers.

Step 13. Well, that’s the finish.

I wish you good luck and remember, the lesson is not the instructions for use, it is a flight of fancy.
