Leave your face in history – Byzantium

Good day to all. A series of lessons “How to leave your face in history” is presented to your attention. In this series of lessons we can see with you how from one photo it will be possible to get images of completely different styles and eras.

Let’s start with the first lesson in the series. The first experience will be reduced to the fact that we will try to process the photo in the style of “Byzantine Icon”.

Step 1.

To begin with, let’s see where we start and what we will strive for.

Step 2

Choose a tool Gradient (gradient) – linear. In the gradient settings, set the colors for it to # fedd90 to # ceb163. After creating a layer, draw a gradient line diagonally.

Create a new layer. On it, draw a gradient line in a different direction. Choose a tool Erase (eraser). Set a low stiffness as well as a low opacity for the eraser. Now carefully erase the top new layer in some places. It is very important that the “color transition” between the layers is smooth.

Step 3

Create a new layer. Fill it up# 3e3840.
Using rectangularmarquee (rectangular selection) and button Deletecut out most of the layer, leaving only a thin border. Without removing the selection, use Selection – TransformSelection (selection – transform the selected area), to slightly reduce the selected area. Fill the highlighted color # 8c572b. Transform the selection again and cut out part of the layer.
Now we have two thin borders on the edge of the layer: Dark gray and brown.

Step four.

Now let’s go Eraser on the curb with the settings as in Step 2
Further: Ctrl + A, Ctrl + Shift + C, Ctrl + Shift + V. Now we have a copy of the three merged layers – layer 2. Apply to this layer FilterNoiseAddnoise (filter – noise – add noise).

Step 5.

Now make a halo.
Using Ellipticalmarquee , make a selection circle. Activate layer 2 Copy the selection to a new layer, rename to layer 3 Layer layer 2 make it invisible.
Create a new layer and rename it to layer four.

Now we will draw lines with the intersection point in the center of the circle. To make it easier to find the center, use the guides. Put two horizontal and two vertical guides close to the circle – you will get a square (for convenience, change the color of the guides to a brighter one).

Make sure the layer is active. layerfour. Use the toolPencil(Pencil) (in the settings, set the line thickness to about 3 pixels., The color is brown).
Now onlayer four pencil click in the “corner of the square” pinch Shift and click in another corner to get a diagonal. Also draw the second diagonal. Through the center of the intersection, for convenience, set the guide. Draw another line with a pencil. So draw four diagonals. If the ends of the lines go beyond the limit of the circle, not scary.Ctrl + cry on a miniature with a circle, Shift + Ctrl + I (invert selection) Delete.

Now increase the number of lines. Ctrl + J (create a duplicate layer) editTransformRotate (edit – transform – rotate), on the settings panel, set the rotation angle. (rotation angle, the most suitable for the size of your document, select at random).

Step 6.

When lines are enough, make it visible. layer 2
Make activelayer four, and change the color and brightness to make the image softer.
Imageadjustmentcolor (image – corrections – color)
Imageadjustmentbrightness (image – adjustments – brightness / contrast)
Duplicate layer 2 (rename it layer 5). Zoom out Edit> transform> scale (Editing – Transformation – Scale). Place it on the layers palette layer 5 under layer four, so as not to hide the diagonal.

Now make a border around the lines. To do this, repeat Step 3, but instead of using a rectangular selection, you must use an elliptical one. Halo finished.

Step 7.

Now let’s do photo processing. Paste the girl layer into the main Photoshop document — rename the layer to Girl.
Duplicate the girl layer, rename the layer – dressgirl. Color the dress. (The author used red, since golden, red and black colors predominate in the Byzantine icons).
First paint the dress completely, using one tone. Then you will need a small brush with soft edges, low level opacity (opacity) and low flow (push).

Changing the tone of red for foreground (foreground), first darken the edges of the dress, then lighten the part of the dress, as in the screenshot.
Duplicate layergirl, rename to girllevels. Place a layer on the layers palette on top. Apply to this layer Imageadjustmentlevels (image – adjustments – levels). Using a soft eraser, wipe your hair and dress off this layer.
Duplicate layer girllevel, rename togirlwatercolor apply Filterartisticwatercolor (filter – imitation – watercolor).

Step eight.

Duplicate layer girl.
Set color for Background (background) – pale pink, and forForeground(foreground) – the black
Apply Filtersketchstamp (filter – sketch – brand). Make sure that both slider are set to low in the filter settings panel. Using a small eraser with soft edges, erase your hair and dress. Change BlendingMode (blend mode) on SoftLight (Soft light). And put this layer on the layers palette to the top.

Step 9.

Duplicate layer 2 and move it up. Using a medium eraser, with a low degree of hardness of the edges, low opacity, process the face and part of the halo inside the small rectangle. Change blending mode on multiply (multiply), set the layer opacity to 36%.

Step ten.

It’s time to “age out” our image, create an imitation of old wood. The easiest solution would be to download such a texture on the Internet. But if you are not looking for easy ways, then we will do everything with your own hands. To do this, you need brushes and a palette of brush tinctures.
Create a new layer. Choose a large soft brush and, using different shades of brown, as well as your fantasy, paint the layer, focusing on the screenshot. Using tools Blur and Smudge with a low degree of pressure, slightly blur and smear the stains on the layer. Add some noise to the layer Filter – Noise – Add noise (filter – noise – add noise). Make sure that there are both dark and light spots on the layer.

Step eleven.

Place a layer old wood to the top blending mode on multiply.
Create a duplicate layer blendingmode on multiply opacity level – 50%.

Step 12.

Now we will make a yellow halo glow. Make active layer five, choose a tool ellipticalmarquee (elliptical selection) and select the circle, copy the selection to a new layer. Now let’s change the color and brightness for the layer that appears. Imageadjustmentcolor balance (image – adjustments – color balance). Set yellow color to -100. Further Image – adjustment – brightness, set the brightness to +50.

Step 13.
