Make a fantastic portrait in Sci-Fi style in Photoshop

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a fantastic sci-fi style portrait. You will learn how to apply a portrait shot to a space background, add effects using textures, work with blending modes, improve color and much more.

1. Create a background

Step 1

Create a new document of 1500 x 900 pixels with the following parameters:

Fill the background with the color # 010e27.

Step 2

Move on LayerNewAdjustmentLayerCurves (Layer – New adjustment layer – Curves) and reduce the brightness by pulling the diagonal line down. On the layers panel, select the mask of the adjustment layer and activate BrushTool (B) (Brush). We use a soft black round brush on the sides of the document so that the background in these areas is not too dark. Later we will add details.

Step 3

Move the space background to the working canvas and change the layer blending mode to Screen (Brightening) with opacity 100%.

At the bottom of the layers panel, click on the button. Addlayermask (Add layer mask) to add a mask to the layer with the cosmic background. With a soft black tassel, we randomly paint over some areas in the center and sides.

Step 4

Above we add an adjustment layer. Curves (Curves) and transform it into a clipping mask by pressing Ctrl + Alt + G. Reduce the brightness of the image to get a softer and neat effect.

2. Add a model

Step 1

Open the photo with the model, cut it out using PolygonalLasso Tool (L) (Rectilinear Lasso), and tool MoveTool (V) (Move) move to the center of the working canvas.

Black soft brush to edit the mask so as to hide the model’s neck, shoulders, hair and forehead.

Step 2

Create a new layer and transform it into a clipping mask (Ctrl + Alt + G). Activate StampCloneTool (S) (Stamp) and remove the earrings:

Step 3

Add an adjustment layer to reduce the brightness at the bottom edge of the chin and cheek. Use a soft black brush to edit the mask in areas where we do not need the effect of the adjustment layer.

Step 4

Add an adjustment layer Hue/Saturation (Hue / Saturation) and decrease Saturation (Saturation) to -16:

Step 5

Add an adjustment layer ColorBalance (Color Balance) to adjust the color of the model to match the background. Customize Midtones (Mid Tones):

Step 6

Take LassoTool (L) (Lasso) and select the mouth. Then go LayerNewAdjustmentLayerCurves (Layer – New adjustment layer – Curves). Increase the brightness of the lips.

3. Create makeup

Step 1

Open the picture with the light ring and insert it on the working paper, using MoveTool (V) (Move). Change the blending mode of this layer to Screen (Brightening) with opacity 100%.

Step 2

Move on FilterLiquify (Filter – Plastic) and activate TwirlClockwiseTool (C) (Twist clockwise). Then we twist the ring until we get the result, as in the picture below, pay attention to the central area in the shape of the eye. We transfer the resulting figure to the eye of the model.

With the help of a mask we delete the excess

Step 3

Duplicate layer (Ctrl + J) and mirror the copy EditTransformFlipHorizontal (Editing – Transformation – Flip Horizontally). Move the copy to the second eye.

Step 4

Select both layers with an eye and press Ctrl + G to add them to the group. Change the blending mode of this group to Screen (Clarification) with opacity 100% and above add a correction layer Hue/Saturation (Hue / Saturation) to change eye color.

Step 5

Create an adjustment layer ColorBalance (Color balance) and customize Midtones (Mid Tones):

4. Add a nebula

Step 1

Move the image of Nebula 1 to the working document and change the blending mode to Screen (Brightening) with opacity 100%. Move on EditTransformWarp (Editing – Transformation – Deformation) and distort the shape of the nebula so that it matches the perspective of the head and eyes.

Using a mask, we adjust the edges of the nebula.

Step 2

We duplicate this layer several times (Ctrl + J) and distribute copies around the head and face, trying to achieve a clearly visible effect on the cheeks. If necessary, use a mask to get rid of unnecessary details.

Step 3

Select all layers with nebula and add to group (Ctrl + G). Set the group blending mode to Screen (Lightening) with opacity 100%. Then we add a correction layer above. ColorBalance (Color balance) and customize Midtones (Mid Tones) and Highlights (Shine):

Step 4

Add an adjustment layer Levels (Levels) to hide the remaining boundaries and soften the effect slightly.

Step 5

Add the second image Nebula 2 to the working canvas and place it at the bottom. Activate the free transform (Ctrl + T) and rotate the image as shown below. Set the layer blending mode to Screen (Brightening) with opacity 100%.

We put on the working canvas picture Fantastic light. Place it on the head and set the blending mode to Screen (Brightening) with opacity 100%.

Use filter Liquify (Plastic) (tool ForwardWarpTool (Warp)) to warp the image and get the result, as shown below:

Step 2

Double duplicate (Ctrl + J) this layer and distribute copies all over the head and on the right side of the model. Use the mask to remove all unnecessary details.

Step 3

Open a separate picture with a fantastic light, take LassoTool (L) (Lasso) and select the part. Copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) the selection in the lower left part of the head. Using tool ForwardWarpTool (Deformation) we give the fragment an arched shape.

Using the mask, hide the hard edges on the fragment.

Step 4

Select another fragment and, using the same technique, insert it on the right side of the head.

Step 5

Using the same method, add more small details.

Step 6

Group all layers with fantastic light and add a correction layer inside the group above. ColorBalance (Color balance). Customize Midtones (Mid Tones):

Step 7

Add a corrective layer Hue/Saturation (Hue / Saturation) and decrease Saturation (Saturation) Blues (Blue) to -81:

Step 8

Add an adjustment layer Levels (Levels) to completely hide the remaining visible boundaries:

6. Extra makeup

Create a new layer. Take EllipticalMarqueeTool (U) (Oval) and draw a small circle. Activate GradientTool (G) (Gradient) and fill the circle with a radial gradient, colors – # f8b2f2 and # 834115.

Via ForwardWarpTool (Deformation) pull the circle in length and place along the contour of the model’s jaw.

Step 2

Change the blending mode of this layer to ColorDodge (Brightening base) with 100% opacity. Add a mask and edit the effect so that it looks soft enough.
