Making a gentle treatment for a female portrait in Photoshop

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a delicate female portrait with corrective layers, mask correction, and color correction.

The final result:

Step 1

Create a new document 1500 px x 1500 px in Photoshop. Fill the background with white. Open the original image with colors, and then move this image to our working paper, arranging it as shown in the screenshot below:

Step 2

Next, go Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur). Install Radius (Radius) blur at 67.4 or approximate blur value to blur the background strongly.

Step 3

Open the original image with the model. Using tool Move (Move Tool (V)), move this image with the model to our working document, apply scaling (Ctrl + T) according to the size of the working document.

Step 4

Click the second icon at the bottom of the layers panel to add a layer mask to the model layer. Using a soft black brush, remove the background around the model image. The remaining background will be compatible later.

Step 5

To the model layer, add an adjustment layer. Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation) as a clipping mask. For this we go Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Hue / Saturation (Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Hue / Saturation). Reduce value Saturation (Saturation) to -14:

Step 6

Next, add a adjustment layer to the model layer. Color Balance (Color Balance) as a clipping mask. Set values for Medium tones (Midtones). Then, go to the mask of this adjustment layer and using a soft black brush paint over the skin of the model so that it is not too red.

Step 7

Now, on the model layer, add an adjustment layer. Curves (Curves) as a clipping mask to lighten the model image. Next, go to the adjustment layer mask. Curves (Curves) and with the help of a soft black brush hide the effect of lightening in the frontal part of the model image, since we plan to create a main light source behind the model.

Step 8

Create a new layer and using a soft brush, brush color # ab4859, paint the model’s lips to make them brighter. Change the blending mode for this layer to Soft light (Soft Light), opacity (opacity) layer 100%.

Step 9

Add adjustment layer Curves (Curves) on top of all other layers to reduce brightness. Next, go to the adjustment layer mask. Curves (Curves) and using a soft black brush, paint around the model so that the correction of the correction layer does not affect this area.

Step 10

Add a fill layer Colour (Color) on top of all other layers. Set the next color cast as fill # 170834. Change the blending mode for this filled layer to An exception (Exclusion), opacity (opacity) layer 100%:

Step 11

Add adjustment layer Color Balance (Color Balance). Change the settings for Medium tones (Midtones) and Light glare (Highlights):

Step 12

Add adjustment layer Levels (Levels) with background for a little shading. Next, go to the adjustment layer mask. Levels (Levels) and using a soft black brush paint over the selected area while maintaining brightness.

Step 13

Add bokeh texture to our working paper. Change the blending mode for the Bokeh texture layer to Lightening (Screen), opacity (opacity) layer 100%.

Step 14

To the Bokeh texture layer, add a layer mask and use the soft black brush to hide the Bokeh effect in the model’s chest area.

Step 15

To the Bokeh texture layer, apply a filter Gaussian blur (Gaussian Blur). Install radius (Radius) blur 37 px.

Step 16

Next, add a correction layer to the Bokeh texture layer. Curves (Curves) to darken the effect. Next, go to the adjustment layer mask. Curves (Curves) and using a soft black brush paint over the image area of the model, which is highlighted in the screenshot below:

Step 17

Create a new layer. Using a soft brush, color brush # 230c01, paint over the areas next to the model’s head to enhance the light. Change the blending mode for this layer to Linear Dodge (Linear Dodge), opacity (opacity) layer 100%.

Step 18

To enhance the light effect, create a new layer and using a soft brush, brush color # ab4859, paint over the area with the light effect. Change the blending mode for this layer to Lightening (Screen), 100% layer opacity:

Step 19

Create another new layer. Using a soft brush, brush color # 6c6989, paint over the bottom of the scene to change the light. Change the blending mode for this layer to Linear Dodge (Linear Dodge), layer opacity is 100%.

Step 20

Add adjustment layer Levels (Levels) to shade the background. Next, go to the adjustment layer mask. Levels (Levels) and using a soft black brush, hide the blackout effect over the model image.

Step 21

Add adjustment layer Vibration (Vibrance) to enhance the background. Next, go to the adjustment layer mask. Vibration (Vibrance) and with the help of a soft black brush hide the correction of the correction layer on top of the model image.

Congratulations! We have completed the lesson!
