In this tutorial, we will create realistic foam text against the beach using the foam pattern, as well as several layer styles. We will also apply filters and effects. To highlight the text, I used the image of the sea beach as a background. The lesson was created with love in the program Adobe Photoshop.
So let’s get started!
The final result:
Create a new layer, name this layer. Sand Texture (Sand Texture). You can use any sand texture at your discretion or you can use a texture that can be downloaded from the link at the beginning of this tutorial (select the latest texture from the list). Since this is a solid texture, then you can use it for any canvas size as a pattern in Photoshop layer styles.
Open the original image ‘Beach’. Copy / paste (Copy / Paste) this image on our working paper, placing on top of a layer with a sand texture.
To the layer with the image of the beach, add a layer mask and using the tool Gradient (Gradient Tool), create a smooth transition between the layer with the beach and the layer with the sand texture.
Next, add your text. I will write the word “Swim” using the font Blow Font. In this tutorial you will learn how to install a font in Photoshop. This font has a convex shape and therefore is very well suited for creating foam text. Thus, try to choose a font that fits this topic.
Right-click on the layer with the text and in the appeared window select the option Convert to smart object (Convert to Smart Object). Next, add a layer style to the text layer. Pattern overlay (Pattern Overlay), select the foam texture as the pattern. Once again, convert the text layer to a smart object.
Duplicate the text layer. Name the duplicate text layer. Text from Foam (Sea Foam Text), and name the original text layer Text in the sand (Sand Text). Let’s add the following layer styles to the layer. Text from Foam (Sea Foam Text).
Shadow (Drop Shadow) # 030303
External glow (Outer Glow) # d93006
Internal glow (Inner Glow) #fbfbfb
Stamping (Bevel and Emboss) #ffffff, # 7a5d3f
Overlay colors (Color Overlay) # 9f7272
Overlay gradient (Gradient Overlay) # 76582c, #ffffff
Stroke (Stroke) # 0bb9664
Now let’s add the following layer styles to the layer. Text in the Sand (Sand Text). Before we add layer styles, decrease the value Fillings (Fill) for this layer to 0%.
First add a layer style. Inner shadow (Inner Shadow), color # 120f0d.
Internal glow (Inner Glow), color # 120f0d.
Stamping (Bevel and Emboss), color: white and # 120f0d.
Finally, add a layer style. Color overlay (Color Overlay), color # 120f0d.
Your foam text should look something like the screenshot below. The size of my working paper is approximately 1300 x 700 px. Therefore, if the size of your document and font is larger than in the lesson, then you need to correct the layer styles, for this we go Layer – Layer Styles – Effects of Layer Effects (Layer> Layer Style> Scale Effects).
You can add a picture effect on the sand or a text effect on the sand in addition to your foam text. Just use the tool. Brush (Brush Tool) and / or tool Horizontal text (Type Tool).
Note: In this lesson you will learn how to make an inscription on the sand.
To make our summer photo manipulation more creative, let’s add additional elements, such as a petrel. If you come across an image of a dodo or a penguin bird when searching for original images, then you can use them because they are very similar to the petrel
To the petrel layer, add an adjustment layer. Brightness / Contrast (Brightness / Contrast) as a clipping mask. For this we go Layer – Adjustment Layer – Brightness / Contrast (Layer> Adjustment layer> Brightness / Contrast).
Next, add the following layer styles to the bird layer. Shadow (Drop Shadow) and Inner shadow (Inner Shadow).
Open the original image with a paradise beach. Move this image to our working paper, placing it on top of all layers. Next, add a layer mask and use a soft black brush to hide the sea and sky area on the layer mask, saving only the islands. Then to the paradise beach layer, add an adjustment layer. Color Balance (Color Balance) as a clipping mask. For this we go Layer – Adjustment Layer – Color Balance (Layer> Adjustment layer> Color Balance).
Create a new layer and with a brush, add clouds above the sea and the beach. You can use ready-made brushes. Clouds, brush color is white. Don’t forget to add the same layer style. Shadow (Drop Shadow) to the clouds that we have already applied to the bird. You can also try on a soft layer style effect. Inner shadow (Inner Shadow) to give the clouds a 3D look.
To create a beautiful summer day effect in Photoshop, all you need to do is add sunshine. Open the original image with the sunset. Move this image to our working paper. Change the blending mode for this layer to Lightening (Screen). You can also reduce the saturation of this layer.
As a final touch, you can apply a filter. Colour contrast (High Pass Filter) to add sharpness to the image. You can see the final result in the screenshot below.
