Making an emotional ghost scene in Photoshop

In this lesson, I will show you how to create an emotional ghost scene surrounded by beautiful red roses. You can use other flowers, such as callas, which are usually brought to the cemetery.

Note: The source of the lesson is missing some images. In the archive you will find an alternative version of the materials for the lesson.

Step 1

Create a new PSD document. Open the original image with a graveyard. Move this image to our working paper, if this image is too narrow, then you can use the tool Fill based on content (Content-Aware) to fill the empty space. For this we go Editing – Run Fill – Fill based on content (Edit> Fill> Content-Aware).

Step 2

Apply a layer style to the cemetery image layer. Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay).

Step 3

Open the original image with the model. Move this image to our working paper. Using tool Pen (Pen Tool), select the model image to remove the background, or use any Photoshop selection tool.

Step 4

It’s okay if the selection created is not perfect. Apply scaling to the image, placing the model as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 5

To the layer with the model, add a layer mask. Using a soft black brush with varying degrees of opacity, paint over the image of the model on a layer mask. The basic idea is to hide certain parts of the model image to create a ghost effect.

Step 6

To the model layer, add an adjustment layer. Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation) as a clipping mask with the following settings:

Step 7

In the layers palette, select the model layer as well as the adjustment layer. Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation) and then press the keys (Ctrl + E) to create a merged layer. Name the merged layer “Model”. Double duplicate the merged layer with the model (Ctrl + J). Shift duplicate layers with the model down so that they are located below the original layer with the model, and then shift the duplicates slightly to the right, as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 8

Decrease opacity (Opacity) three layers with the model up to 80%, 45% and 25% to create a translucent ghost effect.

Step 9

You can also apply a filter. Motion blur (Motion Blur) to these three layers with the model.

Step 10

Next, add a bokeh texture to our scene. Change the blending mode for the Bokeh texture layer to Light replacement (Lighten) or on Lightening (Screen). Add a new adjustment layer Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation) on top of all other layers.

Step 11

Open the original image of the rose. This image of a rose is already separated from the background. Move the rose image to our working paper. Name the layer with the rose “Red Rose”. Using tool Eraser (Eraser Tool), remove the leaves on the stem.

Step 12

To layer with rose, add layer style Inner shadow (Inner Shadow).

Step 13

Next, add a new adjustment layer to the rose layer. Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation). Right-click on this adjustment layer and in the appeared window select the option Create clipping mask (Create Clipping Mask).

Step 14

In the layers palette, select the layer with the rose, as well as the adjustment layer Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation), right-click on the selected layers and in the window that appears, select the option Convert to Smart Object (Convert to Smart Object). Name the layer with the Red Rose smart object. Duplicate the rose layer several times and then duplicate the layers as shown in the screenshot below. Scale the roses, flip vertically, etc.

Step 15

For two inverted roses, apply a layer style. Reduce first opacity (Opacity) of these layers up to 70% and then apply a layer style Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay).

Step 16

Also add the same layer style. Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay) to two roses in the background.

Step 17

Create a new layer and using a brush, brush color # 1d1915, paint the shadows to the roses.

For created shadows, apply filter Gaussian blur (Gaussian Blur) to soften the shadows. And also apply a soft eraser with varying degrees of opacity to create a realistic shadow effect.

Step 18

For the following roses, apply a filter Gaussian blur (Gaussian Blur). Set the following blur radii, which are shown in the screenshot below.

Step 19

Open the original image with the landscape, move this image to our working paper. Place the landscape layer on top of all other layers. To the landscape layer, add a new adjustment layer. Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation). Right-click on this adjustment layer and in the appeared window select the option Create clipping mask (Create Clipping Mask).

Decrease opacity (Opacity) of this adjustment layer up to 55%.

Step 20

Next, go to the adjustment layer mask. Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation) to apply the tool Gradient (Gradient Tool).

Step 21

Select the two roses on the right, and then move the layers with these roses in the layers palette. Arrange these layers so that they are on top of the landscape layer.

Step 22

Open the original image with rose petals, add this image to our working paper. Using tool Eraser (Eraser Tool), create a beautiful composition of falling rose petals.

Step 23

First, on a layer with rose petals, apply a layer style Inner shadow (Inner Shadow) and then add adjustment layers Brightness / Contrast (Brightness / Contrast) and Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation) as clipping masks.

Step 24

Next, add an optical highlight to our scene. Change the blending mode for the layer with the glare on Lightening (Screen) or Light replacement (Lighten)

Step 25

You can also add a snow texture. Change the blending mode for the Snow Texture layer to Lightening (Screen). Apply adjustment layer Levels (Levels) to correct the multiplicity of snowflakes. In addition, you can apply a filter Motion blur (Motion blur). In the settings window of this filter, set Angle (Angle) -50, and Bias (Distance) 5 px.

Step 26

As a final touch, add an adjustment layer. Gradient map (Gradient Map). Change the blending mode for this adjustment layer to Soft light (Soft Light). Set the gradient colors: # 391c3c and #ffedbb

Step 27

To add contrast to the image, you can apply a filter Colour contrast (High Pass Filter) (http://www.psd-dude.com/tutorials/resources/sharpen-photos-with-high-pass-filter-photoshop-tutorials.aspx).
