Mysterious journey in Photoshop

Hello and welcome!

Wandering around the net, I came across pictures made by artist Daniela Owergoor, so in this tutorial I would like to share this collage with you and show how to achieve a similar effect in Photoshop.

Final image

Before you start, download Archive with materials. Create a new document sized 1900x1200px, Resolution (Resolution) 72dpi, in the RGB 8bits color scheme.

Download the first star image in our working paper.

Then paste the following texture and compress it (Ctrl + T) as shown below.

Duplicate the layer and change the blending mode to Linear Dodge (Add)(Linear Dodge)

Now import the image of the desert and position it as shown below.

Take Eraser (E) (Eraser) round shape with Hardness (Hardness) 0% and delete the top and bottom of the desert image to get the perfect overlay.

Open the image with chess pieces, cut them with the tool Magic wand ( Magic wand) or Quick select tool (Quick selection)

Place the cut shapes in your working paper.

Duplicate them (Ctrl + J) and go to the menu Edit-> Transform-> Flip horisontal (Edit -> Transform -> Flip Horizontally) and position as shown below

Now you have two layers with chess, duplicate them and merge them into one layer (Ctrl + E), then go to the menu Image-> Adjustments -> Hue / Saturation (Image-> Correction -> Hue / Saturation)

Hold down the Ctrl key and click on the icon of the first layer to make a selection.

Move the selection a few pixels to the left.

Then press the key Delete (Delete)

Now, repeat the same for the other side.

Go to menu Filter-> Blur-> GaussianBlur (Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur)

Change the blending mode for the layer. Linear Dodge (Add)(Linear Dodge) and lower Opacity (Opacity) up to 55%

Create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N), take Brush tool (B) (Brush) and draw a shadow like below

On a new layer using abstract brushes, draw random shapes.

Then add an adjustment layer. Hue/Saturation (Hue / Saturation) through the menu Layer-> New Adjustment Layer-> Hue/Saturation (Layer -> New Adjustment Layer -> Hue / Saturation)

Load the second image of the stars, change the blending mode to Exclusion (Exception) and lower Opacity (Opacity) layer up to 54%

Add adjustment layer ColorBalance (Color balance) through the menu Layer-> New Adjustment Layer-> ColorBalance(Layer -> New Adjustment Layer -> Color Balance)

Then add an adjustment layer. GradientMap (Gradient map) through the menu Layer-> NewAdjustmentLayer-> GradientMap (Layer -> New Adjustment Layer-> Gradient Map), change the blending mode for it to Overlay (Overlap)

Create a new layer and fill it with a gradient through the menu. Layer-> New Fill Layer-> Gradient (Layer -> Fill Layer -> Gradient).

Change the blending mode to SoftLight (Soft light)

Upload the cloud image to the working paper.

Change the blending mode to Screen (Screen) and then take Eraser (Eraser) round shape with Hardness (Hardness) 0% and erase the bottom of the clouds

Do the same for the second image.

Change the blending mode to Screen (Screen).

Create a new layer, take Brush (Brush) round shape with Hardness(Hardness) 0%, color #bdebf4 in mode Screen (Screen) and, changing the size of the brush, draw reflections as shown below

Create a new layer, fill it with 50% gray by pressing Shift + F5

Change its blending mode to Overlay (Overlap)

Now use Dodge tool (Clarifier) and Burn tool (Dimmer), to give a special atmosphere to our composition, go to the gray layer that you made earlier and play with the tools on the image, dimming too bright areas and lightening the image areas, according to the light path and external reflections.

Open the next image in another document, cut this young man with the tool Quick Select Tool (W) (Quick Selection) and then drag it into our working paper.

Duplicate the layer (Ctrl + J), change the blending mode of the first layer to Darken (Fade), for the duplicated layer, leave the blending mode Normal (Normal), but reduce Opacity (Opacity) up to 38%.

Now create a shadow cast by a person on another layer using Brush (Brush).

Press (Ctrl + Alt + Shift + E) to create a new layer with the combined contents of all visible layers and go to the menu Filter-> Sharpen-> Sharpen Edges (Filter-> Sharpness-> Contour Sharpness)

Then add an adjustment layer. Photo filter (Photo Filter) through menu Layer-> NewAdjustmentLayer-> PhotoFilter (Layer -> New Adjustment Layer -> Photo Filter).

Finally add a correction layer. ColorBalance (Color balance) through the menu Layer-> NewAdjustmentLayer-> ColorBalance (Layer -> New Adjustment Layer -> Color Balance) and adjust the colors as shown below

And here, the end result!
