Step 1

Create a new document with the following parameters:

Unlock the background layer by double-clicking the left mouse button.
Activate the tool “Fill” (Paint Bucket Tool).Set the foreground color to # 041739. Fill this color with “Layer 0”.

Step 2

Add to our work the image “Wallpaper tree”. Name the new layer “1”. Go to the menu “Editing – Transforming – Display Horizontally \
Edit -Transform – Flip Horizontal “.

Standing on the layer “1” press the key combination “Ctrl + j”, in order to make a copy of this layer. Name this layer “2”.
Go back to layer “1” and set the layer’s overlay mode to Overlay; opacity – 83; fill – 40.

Go to the layer “2”. Open the menu “Filter – Blur – Blur on the figure \ Filter – Blur – Shape Blur “. Set the following settings:

Add a layer mask to layer “2” and process the lower right corner with a soft black brush (brush settings: size – 300 pixels; opacity – 30%).

Change the layer blend mode “2” to “Screen” (Screen), fill set at 80%.
Select the layers “1” and “2” and press the key combination “Ctrl + G” – this will create a group of selected layers. Let’s call the group “Christmas Tree”.
Next, do a right click on the group “Christmas Tree”. From the drop-down menu, select the item “Duplicate group” (Duplicate group).
Go to the group “Christmas tree copy.” Select the layer “2” in it. Next, go to the menu “Filter – Blur – Blur in motion \ Filter – Blur – Motion Blur.

Select the two groups (“Christmas Tree” and “Christmas Tree Copy”) and create the “Background” group (“Ctrl + G”). Set the opacity of the “Background” group to 85%.

Step 3

Above the group “Background” create a new adjustment layer “Color Balance” (Color Balance).

Next, above the adjustment layer create a new layer. Let’s call it White Light. Blend mode set to “Soft light” (Soft light), fill (Fill) – 80%. Activate the Brush tool. Choose a soft round brush in white, size – 800 pixels. We put an end to the Christmas tree area.

Now our background looks like this:

Step 4

Open the bottle image in the new document. Separate the bottle from the background (using any method convenient for you, I prefer the tool “Pen” (Pen Tool). Now we transfer the bottle to our working paper.

The image of the bottle is too small. Standing on a layer with a bottle, press the key combination “Ctrl + T”. Next, hold down the key “Shift” (this is necessary in order not to lose the proportions of the object) and pull at any angle. Increase the size values to approximately 245%. Place the bottle in the lower left corner.

Step 5

Add sharpness to the “Bottle” layer. To do this, copy this layer – make a right click on the “Bottle” layer and select “in the dropdown menuDuplicate “Duplicate Layer”.Next, go to the menu “Image – Correction – Discolor \ Image – Adjustment – Desaturation “. Standing on the layer “Bottle copy” go to the menu “Filter – Other – Color Contrast \ Filter – Other – High Pass. ” Set these values:

Set the layer overlay mode “Bottle copy” to Hard Light. Next, hold down the key “Alt” and click between the bottle and bottle copy. Now your “Bottle copy” layer will work as a clipping mask (clipping mask).

Step 6

Add adjustment layers to the bottle. Become on the “Bottle” layer. Add adjustment layer “Hue / Saturation” (Hue / Saturation). Settings:

Note that the layer is automatically formed as a clipping mask!
Next, in the lower right part of the panel, click the “Create New Layer“(Shft + Cntr + N). Go to “Editing – Run fill – 50% gray \ EditFill “. Name this layer“ Light and Shadow. ”Set the layer’s blending mode to Overlay. Activate the tool “Clarifier” ( Dodge), set the following settings:

Handle the front of the bottle.

Next, activate the tool “Dimmer” (Burn), set the following parameters:

Handle the edges of the bottle. The work with the “Clarifier” and “Dimmer” tools (in the “Normal \ Normal” mode):

Select all the layers with the bottle – create a group “Bottle” (“Ctrl + G”).

Step 7

Add image “bokeh”. Place it in the bottom left corner. Blend Mode Set “Screen” (Screen); fill (Fill) – 75%.

The bottle is ready for launch :)

Step 8

Open the image “Cork”. Separate the cork from the background and transfer it to our working paper. Scale and turn the stopper (“Ctrl + T”) focusing on the size and position of the bottle.

Create a duplicate of the “Cork” layer. Rename the original layer to “Blur cork”. Standing on the layer “Blur cork” go to menu “Filter – Blur – Blur in motion \ Filter – Blur – Motion Blur. Set these values:

Reduce layer fill to 75%. Duplicate the “Blur cork” layer and place it above the “Cork to Opium” layer. Zoom out the “Blur cork copy” image to about 70% (“Ctrl + T”), and set the opacity to 70%.

Step 9

Add adjustment layers to the cork. All adjustment layers are applied as a mask layer (“Alt” + click between layers).
“Color balance“(Color Balance \ Cntr + B):
-mid tones:

– shadows:

“Levels“(Levels \ Cntr + L):

Create a new layer (as a clipping mask) and call it “Light and Shadow Cork”. Go to “Editing – Run fill – 50% gray \ EditFill “. Change layer blending mode to Overlay and working with tools “Brighten \ Dodge “ and “Dim \ Burn “. Settings are used such as in step number 6. Processing Scheme:

Activate the tool Blur (Blur Tool). And handle the cork around the edge. Tool parameters:

Select all layers with a cork and create a cork group from them. “Shell” to fly ready! :)

At the moment, the layout of the document layers is as follows:

Step 10

Open the image of Santa Claus. Display it horizontally ( “Editing – Transforming – Display Horizontally \ Edit -Transform – Flip Horizontal”). Separate the character from the background and place it in our working image on top of all other layers. Name the new layer “Santa Claus”. Scale the “grandfather” (“Ctrl + T”). Place it on the cork.

Duplicate the layer “Santa Claus”. Rename the copy to “Blur DM” and place it below the layer “Santa Claus”. While on the “Blur DM” layer, go to the “Filter – Blur – Blur in Motion” menu and set the following parameters:

Change layer settings: opacity – 55%: fill – 30%. Activate the tool “Moving” (Move Tool) and position the blurred image slightly to the left and below the original. This will help get rid of the static “pilot.”

Step 11

To create the effect of flight, we need to “fluff up” the fur on clothes and Santa Claus’s hair. For this we will use the tool “Finger”(Smudge Tool). For further work, you can use two options for customizing the Finger tool.

The first option: use for processing a simple round hard (soft) brush with a size of 1 – 3 pixels ..

The second option: use a brush from the set “hair and fur”. The intensity and size of the brush adjust the method of selection. Brushes “hair and fur” – this is a great find they can be used for many purposes! In drawing, they are simply irreplaceable!

When you have decided on what settings you will work, proceed to the “fluff”. Stretch the hair towards the bottle.

Using the “Finger” need to process and other areas:

Step 12

Work on the lighting of the character. Create a new layer “Light and Shadow DM” (as a clipping mask to the layer “Santa Claus”) and work in the same way as step No. 5 and step No. 9. The scheme of work with the Brighten and Dimmer tools:

Activate the tool Blur(Blur tool) and treat Santa Claus around the contour. Tool parameters:

When processing the back of our pilot, we increase the intensity to 30-40%.
Image of Santa Claus looks illuminated in white areas. We can soften this effect a little. Create a new layer on top of the “Light and Shadow DM” layer. Name the layer “Blackout” (use this layer as a clipping mask for the layer “Santa Claus”). Blend mode set Multiply (Multiply). Activate the tool “Brush” (Brush Tool). Choose a soft round brush (size – 25 pix., Brush color # 3a2114 ) and process the left edge of Santa Claus, as well as denote the transition point of the cap. Set the “Blackout” layer to the following parameters: opacity – 50%; fill – 70%.

Select all the layers related to our character and form from them the group “Santa Claus”

Layer Layer:

Step 13

In order for our “grandfather” to look harmoniously on the traffic jam, you need to add shadows. We return to the “Cork” group. Create a new layer “Shadow 1 DM” and apply it as a clipping mask to the layer “Cork Copy” – this will create the desired shadow without going beyond the cork.

Choose a soft round brush color # 250708. The size of the brush is 10-15 pixels. We draw on the layer “Shadow 1 DM” a shadow under the sleeves and Santa Claus fur coat. Set the layer blending mode to Multiply (Multiply), fill – 70%, opacity – 80%.

Create another layer (as a clipping mask) and call it “Shadow 2 DM”. We draw the shadow from the bend of the foot using the same technique. Create the last layer with the shadow of the character on the traffic jam. Name the layer “Shadow 3 DM”. This shadow is from the whole leg. The principle of drawing does not change. We only change the layer opacity parameters – 70-45%.

It remains to add a shadow from the hair. To do this, return to the group “Santa Claus”. Create a new layer on top of the rest and call it “The Shadow of Hair DM”. Draw the shadows of the strands. The brush settings remain the same, only the brush size will be 4-6 pixels. Layer settings are the same as for the shadows on the cork.

Step 14

Santa Claus has already taken his place. But! What kind of Santa Claus without a gift? ;)
Add this nice little thing!

Open the box image and move it to our working paper. Scale the box to the desired size and place it in the palm of your character.

Add a layer mask to the box layer. Hold down the key “Ctrl” and make a click on the layer “Santa Claus” – we get a selection. Become a layer mask. Select a black round hard brush and draw the palm area.

Step 15

A little adjust the color of the box. Create a new layer above the “Box” layer and call it “New Color”. Use this layer as a clipping mask for the “Box” layer. Set foreground color to # 0f2925. Activate the tool “Fill” and fill the layer “New color”. Add a layer mask to this layer and draw a bow area on the mask with a round stiff black brush.

If you do not like the color of the gift bow, you can change it. On top of the “New Color” layer add an adjustment layer. “Hue / Saturation 3” (Hue / Saturation) (as a clipping mask). Add a layer mask to this layer and press the key combination on this mask. Ctrl +I “ – This will invert the layer mask. Hold key “Ctrl” and click the left mouse button on the mask of the “New Color” layer. Activate a white round hard brush and draw this selection.

Now using the “Hue \ Saturation 3” adjustment layer you can change the color of the bow to your own taste without affecting the color of the box. I made it orange.

Step 16

Add a light and shadow box. Create a new layer on top of the “Hue \ Saturation 3” layer and name it “Light and Shadow of the Box”. Go to the menuEditing – Run fill – 50% gray“. Layer overlay mode set to”Overlap(Overlay). Processing scheme and settings are listed below. Do not be afraid to overdo it with lightening and darkening, it is easy to fix this by reducing the opacity of the layer!

Now select all the layers with the box and create a group of “Gift”.

Add a box shadow to the cork. To do this, use a soft round brush color1d0b0d, brush size – 5-8 pixels. After you set up the brush, go to the “Cork” group. Create a new “Box Shadow” layer and apply it as a clipping mask. Draw a shadow. Set the layer blending mode to Multiply (Multiply), and the fill is 60-80%.

Congratulations! We have completed the main stages. If you are satisfied with the result, then you can stop!

Step 17

Further steps are optional. You can add different elements to make your work more festive. You can also add your favorite color correction techniques. Due to the fact that we created groups – it is possible to make correction of all finished elements without disturbing the rest!

I will add splashes, bubbles, wire, snowflakes and text to the work. For the “convenience” of flight, I drew a wire. For this, a tablet was used (to draw a similar element with a mouse is also not difficult). You can take the finished image.

To add splashes, download any Spray or Drops brushes. Then just draw using these brushes of champagne using these brushes:

Download brushes “Snowflakes”, “Bubbles” and add them to the work.
For color correction, I used 2 layers:

– and also added a new layer (under the curves layer), filled it with color 020d2b. Blend mode – “Difference”, opacity – 60%, fill – 60%.

Here is my final result:

Happy Holidays! May all your dreams come true!

Sincerely, Lyubimova E. (Khitren @)
