In this lesson we will learn to look into the future, to imagine how we will look in old age.

I will say right away, this lesson is designed for people who know Photoshop and having at least some idea of ​​drawing, both on paper and on a computer. Since this lesson focuses on drawing: wrinkles, hair. There will not be an overlay of one photo (the face of an old person) on another (young).
The lesson was written superficially, one can say briefly, I translated it exactly as it was written, adding a little clarification. If I began to describe each step in detail, which the author did not do in his lesson, it would be very long.

Step 1. Select a photo.
Choosing a photo, the author tried to take not a studio, not pre-retouched, but an ordinary photo.

The author believes that the easiest way to work with snapshots, or any pictures taken not in the studio. Since the harsh lighting, in this case, well underlines all the flaws of the skin: bags under the eyes, weak wrinkles. All this facilitates our work in order to make the face look more realistic.

Step 2. selection of material.
Picking the right material is key to the aging method. Remembering Kate’s face, the author looked for pictures of old women who looked like Kate, or they also had facial expressions. In this picture, Kate is smiling and her face is tilted at a 3/4 angle, so the author tried to collect as many photos of old women as possible who would smile in the same manner or close to it. These photos will continue to serve as his model, from which he will draw the details.

Then the author opened the photo of Kate in Photoshop and all the photos of old women found so that it was more convenient to compare.

There is another option for the selection of material. The author likes to use it more, but it is not always possible to find photos of the parents of the person whom you are going to age. The author was lucky, and he found several photos of Kate’s mother on the Internet, they helped him to solve such a question as whether to make Kate double chin or not. Since her mother has a double chin, he decided that he would apply it to Kate.

Step 3. Eyebrows.
The older people become, the less often their hair on the eyebrows, as with age, the hair begins to fall.
Based on this, the author decided to thin her brow.
To do this, use the tool. “Stamp”Old age is no joy(Clone Stamp tool) with 100% level of opacity, small size. Clone near the lying skin and sketching eyebrows, thereby reducing the number of hair.

Step 4. We form a face.
Now you need to add flabbiness, sagging skin. We will do this with the help of filter “Plastic” (Liquify). In the filter “Plastic” tool “Deformation” (Forward Warp) lower a little in a bottom of a cheek, a skin on jaws. When treating cheeks, be careful, as you can overdo it and stretch your eyes in an unnatural shape.

As a result of aging, the bones stop growing and begin to shrink, while the cartilage continues to grow. As a result, the older the person, the larger the tip of the nose becomes.
While in the “Plastic” filter, lengthen the tip of the nose a little, and with the instrument “Bloating” (Bloat) expand it a little. Here the main thing is not to overdo it, so as not to change the nose beyond recognition.

Step 5. Double chin.
Based on the photos of her mother, the author added a rather massive double chin to Kate. For this, he took a brushOld age is no joy , rigidity set 0% and started right on the neck (I think on a separate layer), draw a fold, taking the color from the dark places of the neck. For a realistic effect, changed the size and stiffness of the brush. Well, the photos of other old women for him were examples from which he copied this double chin.

Step 6. Wrinkles under the eyes.
The most important part in all the work is to properly treat the eyes. They can either make the project successful or spoil it. If you make your eyes not exactly, then the resulting old woman will no longer look like Kate.

The author searched for the smallest lines around her eyes and imagined how in the future they would turn into wrinkles, he expanded them in length and width, respectively. Photos of old women helped him, serving as a model. For this, he used tools like “Stamp”Old age is no joy and “Brush”Old age is no joy .

The author writes that he is very sorry that he can not describe in great detail the technique of drawing wrinkles, mainly in this step, he relied on his artistry, intuition and talent.

He emphasized wrinkles around the eyes, extending and deepening the lines, slightly increasing the contrast. He achieved this by darkening the deepening of wrinkles, and lightening the edges, so that the wrinkles are voluminous. In addition, it has expanded, extended wrinkles in the cheekbones. He applied the same technique to the wrinkles around the mouth and on the forehead.

Step 8. We plan large wrinkles.
In this step, the author, on a separate layer, weakly outlined those areas to which he will later or probably will not add wrinkles. This is good to do on a separate layer, at any time you can fix it, without affecting all your work.

Based on the previous step, the author added more wrinkles, in those places where he considered it necessary.
Slightly brought to the fore some sentimental wrinkles, lightening them with a brush, using light skin tones as a color sample.

Step 10. Draw the hairs above the upper lip.
With age, the appearance of facial hair becomes a problem for most women. For some strange reason, hair falls on the eyebrows, but it grows above the lip.
The author did not want Kate to be an exception, so he took a brush and on the new layer drew hairs above the lip.

He tried to make the hairs as thin as possible (possibly reducing not only the size, but also the opacity of the brush). Too thick or too dark hair would draw attention to her mustache, but he did not want that.
Also on this layer, he added more wrinkles to the area below the corners of her mouth.

Step 11. Neck.
The author decided that the neck is too smooth for a woman of 75 years. Therefore, the author has added more wrinkles on the neck. He also added more mass to the bottom of the jaw. Darkening areas of the recess, thereby making the contrast between the dark and light areas.

Step 12. Add age spots.
A key component in facial aging is the addition of age spots.
Create a new layer, change its blending mode to Multiplication (Multiply) and opacity (opacity) reduce to thirty%. We take a brush, choose the color of the darkest on the skin and draw a spot. Spots need to paint an irregular shape (there is not a single pigment spot of perfectly even shape). You can paint as many spots as possible, this is the individuality of each face.

At this step, the author, looking at the work, in general, decided to work out some details more carefully. He added wrinkles (edded wrankl), made a sag above the eye (more sag), added more age spots on the neck, and sometimes finer details.

Most people’s teeth turn yellow with age. The gums with age also change their shape, shrink, exposing the roots of the teeth.

Create a new layer, change its blending mode to Multiplication (Multiply) and opacity (opacity) reduce to thirty%. Take the tool Old age is no joyBrush and choose the color yellow-brown. And we draw a yellow tint on the teeth (I think the author used a brush with 0% stiffness and about 25-35% opacity, put color on the teeth, then once again walked around the edges to draw the shadows).

Now you need to create a new adjustment layer. In order for it to be applied to the previously selected area, that is, to the hair, you need: hold down the key Ctrl and click on the mask thumbnail on the Hue / Saturation layer. Then the selection will appear again.

Add a new adjustment layer and select there. Brightness / Contrast (Brightness / Contrast) Set the parameters such as: brightness +9, contrast -36.

If you put a tick next to “Use the old” and set the settings as in the lesson, it turns out too bright, then you had to reduce the opacity of the layer. After applying the Brightness / Contrast adjustment layer, the dark areas on the hair turned out to be too pale and lost the effect of depth. Choose a layer mask Brightness / Contrast, This can be done either by clicking on the mask in the tab Channels (Channels), or on the layer in the tab Layers (Layers).

Step 15. We thin the hair.
In this step, we will raise the hair line a little, and thin it in the middle. The author did this with a Brush. He took a sample of the color from his forehead and painted the areas on his hair with this color.

As in the previous step, the author painted over a lot of excess, he decided that it would not hurt to add some gray hair.

Step 18. Finishing Touches
At this stage, when everything was already done, the author looked at the image and decided that it was necessary to slightly correct it, removing a few, as it seemed to him, excess wrinkles.

Perhaps someone will say that this lesson was translated in order to simply translate it, since there are almost no specific instructions on where to go in and what to press in order to get this or that effect. But I still hope that it is useful in working with Photoshop. True to perform such work, it will take a lot of patience and perseverance, and, probably, not one hour of time.
