On the Internet, you can find photographs, illustrations and a lot of things that can be a source of inspiration for your work, and on one of these sites I found a wonderful image. I wanted to recreate it, reproduce it in more detail, and I offer you this lesson, at the end of which I give you a link to the author of the original image. In this paper, we will achieve a mixed effect between double exposure and the Bokeh effect, learn how to achieve this result by following a simple and fast technique.
And before you begin, I suggest you look at the final result.
To get started, create a new document 1000? 1220 pixels resolution 72 pixels / inch, color mode: 8-bit RGB color.
Then add a new layer: Menu –Layers (Layer) – New (New) – Layer (Layer) (Ctrl + Shift + N), and fill it with color by going to the main menu – Layers (Layer) – New layerfill (New Fill Layer) – Colour (Solid Color), select color #342329
Then, open the image with the landscape and paste it into our document:
Now add a new layer: menu – Layers (Layer) – New (New) – Layer (Layer) (Ctrl + Shift + N), load the Blood Spatter brushes, select one of the brushes, and then draw white streaks, like in the image below.
Translator’s Note: To install the brush, go to the menu Editing (Edit) – Sets (Presets) – Kit Management (Preset Manager), select the type of set: brush – download – select the unzipped ABR file with a brush of Blood Splash and load.
Add another layer and spray it using color # 342329
Add a mask to the layer with the landscape: click the icon To add layer mask (Add layer mask) at the bottom of the layers panel – next to the layer icon, the layer mask icon will appear, and after activating the mask window, paint over with a soft black brush, as in the image below:
Now we will manually create the bokeh effect. Select Tool Ellipse (Ellipse Tool) (U) in mode Layer Figure (Shape layers) and draw a round shape, as in the image below:
And then, right-click on the layer and go to Overlay options (Blending Options), go to layer style Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay) and set the settings as in the image below:
- Opacity (Opacity) 100%
- Style –Linear (Linear)
- Tick on position Align to layer(Align with Layer)
- Angle (Angle): 90 degrees
- Scale: 100%
- Colors: # de733b and # f6e283
Switch to layer style Internal glow (Inner Glow), set the settings as in the image below:
- Modeoverlay (Blending mode): Lightening basics (Color dodge)
- Opacity (Opacity): 13%
- Source: At the Edges (Source: Edge)
- The size (Size): 73 pixels.
Switch to layer style Gloss (Satin)
- Modeoverlay (Blending mode): Overlap (Overlay)
- Opacity (Opacity): 66%
- Bias (Distance): 46 pixels
- The size (Size): 59 px.
- Colour: # ff5a00
Switch to layer style External glow (Outer Glow)
- Modeoverlay (Blending mode):Screen (Screen)
- Opacity (Opacity): 35%
- The size (Size): 57 pixels.
- Colour: # ff6s00
Now place the layer with the yellow circle in the group and change the blending mode for this group to Screen (Screen): main menu –Layers (Layer) – New (New) –Group (Group).
Then duplicate the group several times and change its size each time by pressing Ctrl + T (free transformation), and arrange them as in the image below:
We will continue duplicating the group with the yellow circle, but we will change the color of the next copy by adding an adjustment layer: Layers (Layers) – New Adjustment Layer (New adjustment layer) – Color tone/Saturation (Hue / saturation), and do not forget to put a tick “Use the previous layer to create a clipping mask”:
Repeat the same process to get the following results:
Now, the most difficult step of our lesson: take the Tool Pen (Pen Tool) (P) in mode Layer Figure (Shape layers), background color # 342329 and draw a female profile. Be patient, if you don’t succeed the first time, try again.
Translator’s Note: Create layers with a profile and strands of hair above all groups with yellow circles.
Editor’s Note: to create a female profile, you can use the actions described in the lesson The effect of double exposure in Photoshop.
Add a layer mask to the face layer: Layers (Layer) – Layer Mask (Layer Mask) – Show all (Reveal All), take the Tool Brush (Brush Tool) (B) and paint on the mask with a soft black brush, as in the image below:
Add a new layer: main menu – Layers (Layer) – New (New) – Layer (Layer), take the Tool Brush(Brush Tool) (B) Hair from those brushes that you downloaded earlier, and paint with # 342329 several strands of hair.
Now again duplicate one group with a yellow circle and place it above all other layers to get the following effect:
Then, open and insert light reflections in your work:
Translator’s Note: For the desired location of the highlights, use Transform: Editing (Edit) – Transformation (Transform) – Turn (Rotate)
Change the layer’s overlay mode to Screen (Screen) and reduce it Opacity (Opacity) up to 43%.
Finally, add a Curves adjustment layer: Layers (Layers) – New Adjustment Layer (New adjustment layer) – Curves (Curves) with these settings:
And here is the final result of our lesson “Phantasmagoric vision.”
