Queen of the Ravens in Photoshop

In this tutorial we will create a fantasy collage, the theme of the collage will be “The Queen of the Ravens”. The most interesting thing is that you can create almost any image of the main character – the queen of butterflies, for example, imagination has no limits! In any lesson there is always a place for your imagination. The lesson is just a hint how to translate the idea into Photoshop. Waiting for your work!

I am always inspired by mythology and fairy tales when I create my study guides. In this lesson, I want to embody an image that combines beauty and dark mystery. I like that the Photoshop program allows you to create your own world, where I can draw extraordinary landscapes and unique characters.

For this tutorial, we will need brushes, photos, and textures. It’s better to load all the necessary resources before we begin.

Step 1

First we create a new PSD file (my file is 1070×1300 pixels in size, but you can choose any other). Add to our document images that will participate in the collage. Scale images according to the size of your document. Next, we begin to cut out individual objects from the photo.
This process requires a lot of attention, take time to detail, do not rush.
There are several tools you can use. For example, the tool “Magic wand (Magic Wand Tool) works great when the background has only one color tone.

In our case, all images have a non-uniform color background, therefore, you need to use the “Pen (Pen Tool) to clearly define the handicap object and copy it to another layer. You can also use the tool “Eraser (Eraser Tool), as I did.

In order to effectively and efficiently apply the tool “Eraser“(Eraser Tool), I used a graphic tablet. I recommend using a small brush for detailed work on small areas.

So, we cut the castle window. Now you need to do the same with the images of the girl and the ravens. Do not be zealous if you remove the feathers from the background and the hairs will correct these sections in the next steps. 1 “,” Raven 2 “ , “Balcony”. Arrange all the elements on the working canvas according to the composition and perspective. My image looks like this:

Step 2

I do not know how other authors create their collages, but personally I prefer to create the whole composition first, and then edit each image individually (add light, shadow, shade, etc …) At this stage I will add a chess floor. I hope in this step you will learn something new.

So, open the Chessboard stock image. Create a new document 150 x 150 pixels. and transfer to it a picture with a chessboard. You should get the same as in the picture below. Next, go to “Editing – Define a pattern (Edit – Define Pattern) “, you can call the new set” Chess “.

For our floor, we will create another PSD-file, the size of 2000×2000 pixels with a white fill. In the new document we add to the white background “Pattern overlay (Pattern Overlay) “and in the proposed list select the” Chess “pattern made in the previous step.

Duplicate the checkerboard layer and merge the two obtained layers (Background and Background copy layers) into one. We got a texture that will be used to create the floor in our work. Transfer this layer to our main file “Queen of the Ravens”. Name the new layer “Chess floor”. Place the “Chess floor” layer under the layer with the castle balcony.

Rotate the “Chess floor” layer by 45 degrees. Place the chess texture in the center of the image and scale it in a vertical line. Then go to “Editing – Transforming – Perspective (Edit – Transform – Perspective) “, change the texture so that it looks realistic.

Step 3

As you can see, there is a gap between the floor and the wall of the castle, we need to fix it. So, create a new layer above the layer with the castle balcony and use the tool “Stamp (Clone Stamp) “(install the sample”Active and lower (CurrentBelow) “) paint the given space.

Now the image looks good, but it will be much better after we work with the tools “Dimmer (Burn Tool) “and”Finger (Smudge Tool) “. Using these tools, draw all the light areas on the stones of the balcony wall, smoothing out the sharp areas if necessary.

Step 4

The walls of the castle are very dark compared to the floor, so you need to make the floor more harmonious – darken. To do this, change “Brightness / Contrast (Brightness / Contrast) “using these parameters:

Double-click the layer name (“Chess floor”) and add the “Internal glow (Inner Glow) “, blending mode -“normal (normal) “, color – the black, opacity – 85% tightening (choke) – 15%, size (size) – 165px, Leave the rest of the settings as default.

Step 5

Open the image of the sky and move it to our collage. Place this layer at the bottom of all the others and name it “Clouds”. To sky “fit” in the big picture, we must adjust “Brightness / Contrast (Brightness / Contrast) “, as in the picture. To enhance the effect, you can increase only the Contrast value to 50.

Step 6

One of the most common problems when creating a collage is that photos have different color tones. This is due to a number of factors, such as:

  • camera specifications;
  • when the photo was taken (night / day);
  • different illumination of objects when shooting;
  • professionalism of the photographer;
  • where the photo was taken (street / indoor).

The first thing we need to do is to establish which of the images will set the color, contrast and lightness. Once you have decided, you need to try to adjust the other elements for the main ones.

In this example, I decided that the castle balcony (+ floor) would be the basis for our work. So far we have three elements that do not coincide with the rest of the image: the queen and two crows. I will start the correction with the image of “Queen of the Ravens,” change “Color balance (Color Balance) “, increasing the yellow and red tones.

Now we change the settings “Brightness / Contrast (Brightness / Contrast) “, adding more contrast.

Add “Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay) “to the” Queen of Ravens “layer with the following settings:

  • color – from black to transparent;
  • style (style) – linear;
  • opacity – 100%;
  • blend mode (blend mode) – “Soft light (Soft Light) “

Step 7

One of the most important elements when working with different cut objects is the shadow. Do not forget that each object must have one, or even more shadows, depending on the situation.
For example, in our case, the shadow of the girl will fall on the floor, wall and window sill. You also have to take into account the light source (s), since they determine the direction and size of the shadow.

I’ll use the tool to create a shadowDimmer (Burn Tool) “(although there are many other methods to add shadow). First of all, I drew a shadow on the floor under the dress.

Now add shadows on the wall of the balcony and window sill

Using previous techniques, process images with crows. In addition to blackout, when working with birds, you must also use the tool “Clarifier (Dodge Tool) “guided by general lighting.

Step 8

First of all, duplicate the “Queen of the Ravens” layer and merge the copy with the original. In order to draw fine details, you need to enlarge the image and use a graphic tablet. When dorisovka queen’s hair, I use the tool “Finger (Smudge Tool) “. I chose the size of the brush 2px and began to” stretch “the hairs in the right directions (to be honest, drawing the hair is not my horse).

We continue to draw hair until we achieve a beautiful shape and length. Also use a 2px hard round brush. When painting with a brush, choose shades from the girl’s existing hair, for this use the tool “Pipette (Eyedropper Tool) “. To give a more realistic effect, at the end of the work, again use the tool”Finger (Smudge Tool) “to mix colors.

Step 9

Make the girl a make-up appropriate to the atmosphere. Create a new layer and name it Black Eyes. Use your favorite brushes (or a regular round brush) and draw black patterns around the eyes, as in the image below. Use the tools “Finger (Smudge tool) “and”Dimmer (Burn Tool) “in order to make the transition of black lines along the edges smoother. Next, change the blending mode of this layer to”Soft light (Soft Light) “, opacity set 80%.

Create a feather tiara using brushes from the standard Spatter Brush set, 39px in size. Select a color as the main color for the sketch. # 34322d. With the tools “Finger (Smudge tool) “and”Dimmer (Burn Tool) “, draw some feathers like you did with your hair.

Add the pearls at the base of the tiara and on the dress, as in the picture (you can draw them or use any stock image of pearls). Add also a little glitter using your favorite brushes with stars or sparkles.

Step 10

One of the final steps is to choose a basic color mood and lighting. So, create a new layer on top of all the other layers and name it Vignette. Fill it with any color. Change the parameter “Fill (Fill) “this layer to 0%. Go to “Layer Style” and activate “Internal glow (Inner Glow) “with these settings:

Click “Create a new adjustment layer (Create new fill or adjustment layer) “in the bottom right of the panel and select from the list”Gradient map (gradient color map) “. Make sure you set the blend layer to gradient to”Overlap (Overlay) “, opacity lower to 70%. For the gradient map, use these colors: # ff6e02 (location 0) # ffc168 (location 50) # ff6e02 (location 100). The big plus is that you can always change the gradient without affecting other layers.

Create another adjustment layer, this time select “Brightness / Contrast (Brightness / Contrast) “and increase the contrast to 50.

Now your collage looks like this:

Step 11

I decided to add a landscape that can be seen between the columns of the balcony, because it gives depth to the whole image.
Add to the work image “Ruins”. Place the ruin layer between the layers with the castle balcony and clouds. Change the layer overlay mode “Clouds” to “Soft light (Soft Light) “. Now you can see the new” Ruins “layer, and continue working with it.

Reduce the size of the image “Ruins” to 60% and place it on the left side of the picture. Duplicate this layer and flip horizontal. Place a duplicate layer on the right side of the image.

Our landscape is not yet complete. You can see that there is an ugly gap between two images. It is necessary to fill the gap between these parts. Use the tool “Stamp (Clone Stamp Tool) “to fix this. Use a soft round brush when working with the tool.”Stamp (Clone Stamp Tool) “, and press”Alt“choosing the source of the clones, fill the empty space leisurely.

Using the same technique hide the ruins on the left side of the collage.

To achieve a more realistic picture, I will use the tool “Finger (Smudge Tool) “to” mix “the color of the clouds.

It is also necessary to slightly adjust the light and dark parts of the sky in order to make it look more uniform. To achieve this goal, use the tools “Dimmer (Burn Tool) “(on exposed areas) and”Clarifier (Dodge Tool) “(on the darkest areas).

Step 12

Add the final touch! Use any of the brushes “Birds” and draw the ravens in the background. Now our collage is ready!
I hope you enjoyed performing this lesson!
