Running through the bullets in Photoshop – Part II

In this tutorial, we will continue to work on creating a stunning frame with a girl running through the bullets using Photoshop.

This lesson will tell you about working with transformation tools and layer blending modes. Also, you will learn how to create a realistic effect of movement. As a result of the lesson you will receive a dynamic colorful collage.

Lesson plan:

  1. work with military aircraft and model;
  2. create the effect of destruction;
  3. add bullets and shards;
  4. work with adjustment layers for interesting effects;

Requirements for the implementation of the lesson:

  1. any version of Photoshop;
  2. inspiration and good mood;
  3. favorite music and a cup of tea :)

Resources for the lesson:

Step 41

Now let’s add the splinters.
To do this, go to File – Post … (File – Place …). Select a file with glass fragments.

Step 42

The size of the glass fragments must be reduced by using the combination Ctrl + T.

Step 43

Make two copies of the glass elements layer (use the key combination Ctrl + J). Then all the layers with fragments are grouped together (Ctrl + G).

Create another group called “Glass”. Move the glass shard group to the Glass group.

Step 44

By the same principle (see previous steps), I placed other glass fragments in the Glass group. In the image below you can see the scheme of layers (sequence). Also in the pictures are additional copies of layers with fragments (marked in red), which I added.

Step 45

After the work done, my picture and sequence of layers looks like this:

Step 46

Create another subgroup in the Glass group (Ctrl + G). In this group, you also need to place the fragments that are visible on the floor.
To do this, create seven copies (Ctrl + J) glass fragment number 6. Place the fragments over the entire floor area. Change the size of several fragments so that the image does not look monotonous.

Step 47

Create a duplicate of the group with which you have just worked (the group that contains fragments No. 6). Activate the tool Move (Move Tool (V),) and move the fragments of the group-copy slightly forward, closer to the dark area of the floor.

Step 48

Place additional shards. To do this, go back to File – Post … (File – Place …) and select a file with glass fragments.
Inside the group “Glass” create another subgroup (Ctrl + G) under the name “Big fragments” (“Big glass”) and transfer to it, the previously selected image with fragments. Then, increase the size of the fragments. To do this, while standing on a layer of fragments, hold down the key combination Ctrl + T and drag the image.

Step 49

Duplicate the glass shard layer (Ctrl + J) and place new shards in the upper left corner.

Step 51

Select the two upper layers of copy with shrapnel No. 6. Duplicate these layers. Flip duplicate horizontally, to do this, go to Editing – Transform – Flip Horizontally (Edit – Transform – Flip Horizontal). Place the resulting shards on the right side of the picture.

Step 52

Select the last 4 layers with shards (holding Shift) and duplicate them (by clicking Ctrl + J).

Now combine duplicates in one layer. To do this, use the key combination Ctrl + E.

Step 53

Add fragments of dynamics, in order to get the effect of “flying glass”. For this we apply the filter Distortion (Distort). You will find this filter by going to Filter – Distortion – Distortion (Filter – Distort – Pinch). Impact force set to 50%. Click Ok.

Your blurry layer will look similar. Place the layer of blurred debris at the very bottom of the Big Shards group.

Step 54

Here is the work at this stage:

Step 55

Add two adjustment layers to the group with glass fragments.
The first adjustment layer we use is Photo filter (Photo Filter). To add this layer go to: Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Photo Filter (Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Photo Filte), or simply click on the corresponding icon at the bottom of the layers panel.

Set the settings:

Filter: Cooling Filter (82);
Density: 39%

Step 56

Add a second adjustment layer Brightness \ Contrast (Brightness / Contrast). In the settings, set:

Brightness: 82;
Contrast: -50.

Step 57

What kind of action without a weapon?
I think it’s time to add bullets!
I will not describe in detail how the “rain” of bullets was created, since this is a rather painstaking and lengthy process. Instead, I prepared for you a combined image with bullets, which you will find in the source materials for the lesson :)
For the work!
Switch to File – Post … (File – Place …) and select the file with the bullets.

Step 58

Use the function Transformations (Transform) and place the bullets as shown. And then add a layer mask to the bullet layer.

Step 59

On the toolbar, activate Brush (Brush Tool (B)) black and set the following settings:

size (size): 100 pixels;
hardness (hardness): 0%;
Opacity: 100%;
push (flow): 100%

Standing on a layer mask, hide the extra bullets. Pay special attention to the area of the image with the character, it must be completely clean of bullets.

Step 60

Add a correction layer to the bullet layer Black and white (Black White) with settings as shown:

Step 61

Add to our work a dark vignette.
Activate the tool Oval area (Elliptical Marquee Tool (M)) and draw a large ellipse. Invert the resulting selection (Ctrl + Shift + I).

Step 62

In order to make the selection edge softer, right-click on the oval selection and in the appeared submenu, use the “Feathering(Feather). Feathering radius: 40 pix.

Step 63

Now activate the tool Fill (Paint Bucket Tool (G)), set the color to black and fill the selected area on the new layer.

Step 64

Lower opacity (opacity) layer with vignette up to 33%.
Then hold down the key Alt and apply a vignette layer as a clipping mask to the underlying layer.

Step 65

Hold key Shift and select all bullet related layers. Then move the selected layers to the Glass group.

Step 66

Work on the light and shadow. First, create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N). In the menu that appears, set the parameters as shown in the figure. On this layer we will create dark and light areas using the tools Clarifier (Dodge Tool (O)) and Dimmer (Burn Tool (O)).

Step 67

To work with the above tools, use the following settings:

Step 68

Temporarily switch the blending mode of the layer with light and dark areas to Normal, so that you can see the scheme of applying light and shadow.

Step 69

Add light and shadow to the ships. The scheme of steps will be similar to the one we used for the model.
A small hint: for convenience, turn off the visibility of all layers that are located above the group with ships.

Step 70

We will still use the tools for the job. Clarifier (Dodge Tool (O)) and Dimmer (Burn Tool (O)). The settings for these tools will be the same as in the previous step. The scheme of work you can see below in the figure.

Step 71

At this stage, our work has the following form:

Step 72

Duplicate the vignette layer. Move this layer to the top of the layer map.

Step 73

Add a correction layer over all layers. Color balance (Color Balance). The settings for this layer are shown below.

Step 74

Please note that the color adjustment made affects all work.

Step 75

Create a hologram effect. For this, we will use an image with a texture called “triangles_5”. To add texture to work go to File – Post … (File – Place …).

Step 76

Place the image with the texture on the canvas so that the triangles are on the right side of the picture.

Step 77

Duplicate the triangles texture layer (Ctrl + J). Now go to Editing – Transform – Rotate 180 ° (Edit – Transform – Rotate 180).

Step 78

Place the transformed copy layer in the upper left corner of the canvas.

Step 79

Add a layer mask to the texture copy layer. Use a soft black brush to paint over the center area of the canvas. Then lower the opacity of each layer with a triangle texture to 50%.

Step 80

Now merge the two texture layers into one (the key combination Ctrl + E). Add a layer mask to the layer. On the toolbar, activate Brush (Brush Tool (B)) black and set the following settings:

size (size): 100 pixels;
hardness (hardness): 0%;
Opacity: 100%;
push (flow): 100%

Process the center of the image as shown below.

Step 81

Change the texture layer mode to To divide (Divide).

Step 82

After adding the texture, our work looks like this:

Step 83

We come to the final steps.
Now we will add such a beautiful element as a flash of light. To do this, move on to File – Post … (File – Place …) and turn to the folder with flashes of light. In this folder, select an image called “Blurry Blue By CodeDraco”.

Step 84

Place the flash layer on top of the layer map. The flash itself is located approximately at the window level.

Step 85

Set the layer blend mode with flash to Screen (Screen).

Step 86

Here is the end result of our labors with all the layers. I hope you enjoyed working on this lesson!
