In this tutorial, we will use Photoshop to create a collage in the style of fantasy. The main motive of the work will be lilies, a dark background and a beautiful girl.
This lesson gives you a lot of space for fantasy: you can replace the main character, use a different color scheme, add different plants.
This lesson is quite detailed, which makes it available to those who are just beginning to learn the program. Also, you will find in the lesson links on how to work with these or other tools.
In order to start the implementation, first of all download the source materials, which are attached below.
View the final image. As you have noticed, we will pay considerable attention in our work to color, contrast and lighting.

For the work that we are going to create, I choose a rather large size of 7087×5315 pixels, and a resolution of 300 files / inch (File – New (File – New)).
Open the image “Forgotten Room”. Create its selection by pressing the key combination Ctrl + A, then copy the room image by clicking Ctrl + C. Go to the working document and paste the copied image using the combination Ctrl + V.
The image of the room is smaller than the size of the working canvas. I propose to increase the area of the wooden floor.
Activate the tool Rectangular area (Rectangular Marquee Tool (M)). Using this tool, select a section of the floor and copy it to a new layer by pressing the key combination Ctrl + J. Increase the copied area slightly (to get the right perspective). Add a layer mask to the duplicated part of the floor. Then soft black Brush (Brush Tool) process on the layer mask the junction of the copied and original floor.
Add a dilapidated wallpaper on the wall. Open and download to your computer the original image “Wallpaper”. Place this image on a working canvas. Now we will create a combined texture.
To do this, press the key combination Ctrl + T and increase a bit of the texture of the wallpaper. Then use the combination Ctrl + J (for quick copy creation).
Flip the copy horizontally (Editing – Transform – Flip Horizontally (Edit – Transform – Flip Horizontal)). Move the copy to the right, until the junction between the two images with wallpaper. Again duplicate the layer with wallpaper and flip it horizontally. Drag the copy to the new joint. Repeat these steps a few times and you will get a similar texture:
Select all the layers with wallpaper and click Ctrl + E, in order to create a single layer of them. Set the blending mode (blending mode) of this layer to Multiplication (Multiply), and opacity (63%). Add a layer mask and a soft black Brush Tool to the layer with wallpaper, erase the edges of the wallpaper to create a smooth transition to the background wall.
Download and install the Cracks Brushes. Select the brush number 683 from the list. Set the brush color to # 1e2529. Draw cracks (on a new layer) in the lower right side of the wall.
Reduce the brightness of cracks. To do this, use the adjustment layerColor tone \ Saturation (Hue / Saturation). This adjustment layer should be used as a clipping mask (clipping mask) to the “Cracks” layer.
You can use the same method and add more cracks to the right side of the wall. When you are satisfied with the result, select all the layers that belong to the cracks and merge them into a group (Ctrl + G) with the name “Cracks on the right side of the wall.”
In the same way, add cracks on the left side of the wall, but this time use brushes with the number 1092. Form the group “Cracks on the left side of the wall”.
Add a sofa in the center of the room. Open the image with the sofa in the new document. Activate the tool Quick mask (Quick Mask (Q)). Create a sofa selection. Exit quick mask mode. Invert the selection (Selection – Inversion (Select – Inverse)). Move the sofa to the main document. Place it in the center of the room.
Above the sofa layer create a new layer (Shift + Ctrl + N) in overlay mode Overlap (Overlay), with fill – 50% gray, and apply the new layer as a clipping mask to the layer with the sofa. Name this layer “Fade”. Activate the tool Dimmer (Burn Too) and work on the gray layer of the wooden sections of the sofa. Use the following settings for the Burn Too tool: range – medium tones; Exposure – 11%:
Above the layer “Fade” add an adjustment layer Color tone \ Saturation (Hue / Saturation) (as a clipping mask), and reduce the saturation of the layer with the sofa. It should match the tone of color in the room.
In order that the sofa does not look flat, you need to add a shadow. To do this, standing on a layer with a sofa, go to Layer style (Layer Style) select Shadow (Drop Shadow), and set the following settings:
We turn to work on the main character. Open the image of the girl in the new document. Select it with Quick masks (Q) and move to the main collage. Place the princess on the couch.
Create a new layer above the model layer and fill it with 50% gray. Apply this layer as a clipping mask to the underlying layer. Activate the tool Dimmer (Burn Too) and draw on the gray layer of the skin on which the shadow falls.
Now draw a shadow that the girl casts on the sofa seat. To do this, create a new layer under the model layer. Hold key Ctrl and click on the girl layer icon. Fill the selection with black.
Convert the shadow layer to a smart object (by right clicking on the layer and choosing “Convert to smart object“(Convert to Smart Object)). After converting the layer to a smart object, you will see a special icon:
Apply a filter to the shadow layer. Gaussian blur (Gaussian blur), so that the shadow would become more natural.
The girl’s hair is a beautiful red color, but they look too bright for our work. I want to slightly reduce the intensity of their color. Go to the model layer. Activate Quick Mask (Q) and create a haircut selection. Invert the selection. Add a new adjustment layer over the darkened skin. Color tone \ Saturation (Hue / Saturation), as clipping mask. Enter the settings as shown below.
Also, we change the color of the lips. Create a lip selection using the Quick Mask (Q). Invert the selection and add the adjustment layer again. Color tone \ Saturation (Hue / Saturation) (as a clipping mask). Set the following values:
Light falls on the girl’s lips. In order to emphasize this, add a new layer above the adjustment layer that we used to change the color of the lips. Activate the tool Brush (Brush Tool), set the color to white, and paint the middle of the upper and lower lips. Transform a layer with white spots into a smart object, and then apply a filter to it Gaussian blur (Gaussian blur). Lower the opacity of the blurred layer to 6%.
On the general background, the girl looks like a bright spot. To fix this we will reduce the saturation of the layer with the model. Above the lip gloss layer, create a new adjustment layer. Color tone \ Saturation (Hue / Saturation). Move the sliders as shown in the example below:
Let’s work on a white dress and give it a cream shade. In the Quick Mask (Q) mode, create a selection of the dress. Then using the key combination Ctrl + J copy the dress to a new layer. Above the clothes layer, create a new layer (like a clipping mask) and fill it with 50% gray. Set the blending mode to Overlap (Overlay). Then activate the tool Dimmer (Burn Too), in the settings, select medium tones (midtones), and set a small exposure. Draw on the gray layer of the dress that you want to darken.
To give a creamy shade to the dress, we will use two adjustment layers. Color tone \ Saturation (Hue / Saturation) and Levels (Levels).
Let’s move on to adding colors. Open image with white lily. Separate the flower from the background and transfer to the working paper. Place the lily on the girl’s hair. Add layer style to lilies Shadow (Drop Shadow).
We will correct the saturated color of the lily, as in the previous cases, using the correction layer Color tone \ Saturation (Hue / Saturation).
All the layers that we created earlier (those that are associated with the model), you need to merge into one layer called “Girl”.
Add water and stones to the wooden floor. Open the image with the stones and move them to the main document on a new layer. Duplicate this layer twice. Add a layer mask to each layer with stones and a soft black brush to apply a background to hide it. Place the stones around the sofa and lower the opacity of these layers in the range of 38% – 42%.
Combine all layers with stones in one group, under the appropriate name. Now add a correction layer above the group. Color tone \ Saturation (Hue / Saturation) to give the image a light blue tint.
Open the “Water” image and place it in the working paper above the “Girl” group. Press the key combination Ctrl + J, in order to quickly create a copy of the layer with water. Flip the copy layer horizontally and move it so that it completely fills the floor area. When you are satisfied with the placement of water, select both layers with water and press the combination Ctrl + E, in order to merge these two layers into one.
Add a vector mask (layer mask) to the layer; activate a black soft brush with an opacity of about 50% and paint the transition points (near the back wall and along the edges) in order to get a smoother effect. Reduce the opacity of the black brush and additionally walk along the edges of the water layer (on the layer mask). As a result, the water should be clearly visible at the legs of the sofa and on the girl’s dress.
Open the image with the clock and transfer it to your collage. Scale the clock to the size of your work using Transform (Ctrl + T). Place the clock on the wall above the sofa. Then add a layer to correct. Color tone \ Saturation (Hue / Saturation) (as a clipping mask to the layer with the dial).
Under the “Watch” layer, create a new layer (Shift + Ctrl + N) and call it “Shadow under the clock.” Standing on a new layer, make Ctrl + click on the “clock” layer icon to make a selection around the dial; fill the selection with black.
Move the shadow layer down and to the right. Convert the “Shadow under the clock” layer into a smart object and apply a filter Gaussian blur (Gaussian Blur):
Adjust the lighting hours. Focusing on the main light source, we will add some light highlights to the left side of the clock, and a shadow to the right. Above the Hue / Saturation adjustment layer create a new layer called Glare on the Clock. Activate the tool Brush (Brush Tool); White colour; opacity – 10-20%; stiffness – 0%. Paint the left part of the dial with a brush, set the blending mode (in the ending model) of the layer to Soft light (Soft Light), and lower the opacity (opacity) to approximately 31%.
Create another new layer called “Shadow on the clock.” Change the brush color to black and paint over the right side of the dial. Change the blending mode of this layer to Soft light (Soft Light) and reduce the opacity (opacity) to 96%:
All layers related to working with the clock, you need to put in a separate group “Watch”.
Above the group “Clock” add adjustment layer Color tone \ Saturation (Hue / Saturation) with these settings:
Add a little curtain over the clock.
Open the image with the lace curtains, separate the curtain from the background and move it to the working document. Layer with curtain position above the last adjustment layer.
Add a drop shadow from the curtain. To do this, go to the Layer Style and enter such parameters for the parameter Shadow (Drop Shadow):
To make the curtains look more transparent, add a correction layer to the “Curtain” layer. Levels (Levels) (like clipping mask).
After previous transformations, the cornice is knocked out of the overall picture. Activate the tool Quick mask (Quick Mask (Q)) and select portions of the eaves that are visible on the right and left side. Above adjustment layer Levels (Levels) create another adjustment layer – Color tone \ Saturation (Hue / Saturation) (as a clipping mask). Using the corresponding slider, lower the saturation of the selected areas.
Under the curtain layer, create a new layer (Shift + Ctrl + N). Activate the tool Brush (Brush Tool), set the black color and hardness to 0%. Draw dark stripes under the eaves. Change the blending mode of this layer to Multiplication (Multiply) and lower the opacity to 33%.
All layers with curtains combine into one group called “Lace Curtain”.
Decorate with lilies cracks on the wall. Open the “Lilies” image and separate the flower you like from the background. Then move the lily to the working paper. Duplicate the lily layer 5 times (Ctrl + J) and place the flowers as shown in the picture below.
Add a shadow to the lilies. Go to the first layer of the original with a flower. Double click on the layer and go to Layer Style settings. Using the tab Shadow (Drop Shadow), add a shadow from the flower.
Right-click on the style in the layers palette and select Copy layer style (Copy Layer Style).
Select other lily layers by holding down Shift. Then right-click and select in the submenu Paste style layer (Paste Layer Style).
Reduce the opacity of each layer with lily to 85%.
Also, for each layer with a flower, you must add a correction layer. Color tone \ Saturation (Hue / Saturation) (as a clipping mask).
All layers with lilies and adjustment layers that belong to them are placed in a group called “Lilies on the right.”
By the same principle, add lilies on the left side of the wall and place them in a group called “Lilies on the left.” Also, if you wish, you can add several lilies in the center of the wall.
Add rays of light. In this paper, the light will fall on the left side. Set Photoshop brushes “Rays of Light.” Set the foreground color to white. Activate the tool Brush (Brush Tool) and in the list select the brush you like with the rays. Now draw the rays as shown in the screenshot.
Change the layer blend mode to Soft light (Soft Light), and lower the opacity to 26%. Copy this layer several times. Do not change the blending mode, and lower the opacity of the copy layers to 23%. Then place the rays so that they fall on the sofa and the girl.
Create another duplicate layer and increase its opacity to 779%. Add a vector mask to this layer and erase the part of the light that falls on the girl. Duplicate the layer again, lower the opacity to 35% using the same technique and remove unnecessary light glare from the beam.
Place layers with rays in a single group of “Rays of Light”.
Above the Rays of Light group, create a new layer called Reflection of Light. Use a soft white, round brush to draw the reflection of light rays on the water.
Change the blending mode of this layer to Soft light (Soft Light) and reduce its opacity to 41%.
Add sparkles in the water. Install the program in the brush “Spark”. Create a new layer on top of the “Reflection of Light” layer and name it “Sparks”. Activate the tool Brush (Brush Tool), select your favorite shape with sparks and draw small specks on the water near the sofa. In order for the sparkles to light up, add a Layer Style “External glow“(Outer Glow):
Duplicate the lights layer three times (Ctrl + J). Then combine the sparks and the group “Reflection of Light” into one group – “Reflection and Gloss”.
We have almost finished this lesson. It remains to work a little on the overall color and tone of the picture. At the top of the layers palette (on top of all previous layers and groups) create an adjustment layer. Gradient map (Gradient Map).
Click on the gradient bar to open the gradient editor. Create a gradient from dark gray to light gray:
Change the blending mode of the Gradient Map layer to Soft light (Soft Light) and lower the opacity to 59%. Switch to the layer mask of the adjustment layer with a gradient, and use a soft black brush to brush the center of the canvas, leaving a darkening only at the edges. When working, use a black brush with a slight opacity.
Duplicate the gradient layer three times. Also, to give a general atmosphere, I applied the following adjustment layers:
I also decided to add to the work a frame of blackthorn and dry branches. To do this, you can use the brush “Liana” and “Thickets”. Don’t forget about plant shadows, use a soft round brush to create them.

To give realistic thickets, you can use Layer Styles: Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay) and Inner shadow (Inner Shadow). In the work on adding shadows, you can also use the data from lesson 1 and lesson 2:
Continue adding plants, creating a beautiful frame. To give work depth, you can use a filter Gaussian blur (Gaussian Blur) and blur the branches that are farther from the girl heroine.
Take advantage of flowers-lilies and decorate thickets. When working with colors, use the above methods: add shadow, color and brightness correction, blur. When working, you can focus on the image below:
As a final touch, I added brighter rays of light and some pollen-sparks. Then applied another adjustment layer. Gradient map (Gradient Map), so that the work would get a warmer tone.
