Tender sepia

In this lesson we will learn to create the effect of tender sepia.

Also, the image will look good in black and white.

Step 1. Open the photo with which we will work.

Step 2. Analyze the palette Channels (Channels). In the red channel (Red) the lightest skin, but expressionless lips. In the green channel (Green) lips more saturated tone, but dusky skin. Blue channel (Blue) does not suit us at all.

Let’s stop on the green channel, but slightly change it. You can choose another channel as a basis, it all depends on the image.

Step 3. Use the command Calculations (Calculations). It is in the menu Image – Calculations (Image – Calculations). We superimpose the green channel on itself in a mode Lightening (Screen). Quite often it makes sense to impose on each other different channels, for example, red to green. Experiment with your image. In the window Result set the value New document. Then the result of operations with the channels will appear in the new file, and the original image will remain intact.

That’s what we did.

Please note that the image is in Multichannel mode! For further operations, switch it to Grayscale mode, then to RGB. This is done through the menu Picture – Mode (Image – Mode)

Step 4. Create an adjustment layer Curves (Curves). To do this, click on the black and white circle at the bottom of the layers palette.

From the drop-down list, select Curves. Raise the curve in the shadow area to lighten and reduce the image contrast

As you can see, the sharp dark areas brightened and the image became softer.

Step 5. Here your actions can be very different. You can give a sepia effect to the image by toning, Image – Correction – Hue / Saturation (Image – Adjustment – Hue / Saturation) by ticking the parameter Tint. You can use the command Photo filter. I used a toning method using a correction layer. Gradient map (Gradient Map).

To do this, in the dialog box, create a gradient from dark brown to light brown or white, depending on how bright the image you want to get.

About working with gradients, see this lesson.

Step 6. Combine all layers by clicking SHIFT +CTRL +E and save the image. Let me remind you that the original image remains in its original form, we did not make any manipulations with it. Here is our result.

I wish you all an easy and pleasant development of such a complex program like Adobe Photoshop! Until we meet again, friends.
