In this lesson, you will learn how to combine different images to create an illustration, as well as how to turn a real picture into a funny cartoon character.
If you want to get a PSD file with the work, you can buy it from the author of the lesson. The author warns that the layers with images from paid drains are marked with copyright.
Materials for the lesson:
So, let’s begin.
Open the image with the picture and in the settings, set the resolution to 72 pixels / inch, width 3000 pixels. You can choose a different size if desired, but you need to take into account that you have to adjust all the settings proposed in the lesson, as they depend on the image size.
To add space at the bottom go to the menu. Image – Canvas Size (Image> Canvas Size).
Create a new layer below the picture layer (all layers with the underwater world should be below the illustration). Draw a large rectangle that will cover all the empty space under the picture. Now fill this area with the gradient settings below.
Using tool Eraser (Eraser Tool) erase areas of the layer with a gradient to create a semblance of relief.
Create a new rectangle above the gradient layer and fill it with a stone pattern.
Add a layer mask to the layer with stones. Activate this mask and erase the central part, on the left and right sides, to create a space under the ice.
Add style to this layer. Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay).
For the gradient settings, use the screenshots below.
Now create a new layer above the layer with stones and apply a pattern with soil to it.
Remove all areas marked in red, leaving only the upper part underground.
Use translucent, torn, texture brushes to create a transition between stones and soil.
Make active the layer with stones and duplicate it. Remove the mask from the bottom layer. The central part will be covered with stones again. Now merge this layer with a new blank layer. Without removing layer activity, enter the mode Quick masks (Quick Mask Mode) and fill the entire layer with black. After that, the entire surface will be covered with a red tint. Then activate the tool Brush (Brush) soft, round, white color and process the area as shown in the screenshot below. Exit mode Quick masks (Quick Mask Mode) and you will have a selection approximately as in the screenshot.
Go to the menu Filter – Blur – Blur at shallow depth of field (Filter> Blur> Lens Blur) and apply the following settings.
Add a layer mask to the bottom layer with stones. Erase the central part, leaving only small areas near the original stones. Use a soft brush to create a smooth transition. Also reduce Opacity (Opacity) this layer to 75%.
Create a new layer above the stone and soil layers and fill it with an ice texture.
Change the blending mode for this layer to Screen (Screen) and reduce Opacity (Opacity) up to 70%. Now, by clicking on the corresponding icon at the bottom of the layers palette, add a new adjustment layer. Levels (Levels).
For level settings, use the proposed screenshot.
Add a mask to the layer with ice and erase the areas marked in red using a large soft texture brush from the standard ones. For example: “a piece of chalk (Chalk) “,”Sprayand (Spatter) “,”Texture (Texture) or others.
You should get something like this.
Create a new layer and fill the tree silhouettes with any color.
Ctrl + click on the thumbnail of the tree layer to load the selection. Now you can make this layer invisible, we need only a selection.
Copy the selected trees and paste them on a new layer. Go to menu Editing – Transform – Flip Vertically (Edit> Transform> Flip Vertical). Move the trees down.
Using tool Polygonal Lasso (Polygonal Lasso Tool) separate one of the trees and paste it on a new layer. For a large tree, apply the blend mode Multiplication (Multiply), reduce Opacity (Opacity) up to 70% and place this layer below the layer with ice, but above the layer with gradient. Now, using free transformation, squeeze this layer a bit vertically.
Select branches in mode Quick masks (Quick Mask Mode) using a large soft brush. Apply to the tree layer Filter – Blur – Blur at shallow depth of field (Filter> Blur> Lens Blur) and apply the parameters Radius (Radius) approximately 8-10.
Place the second small tree in the upper part under the layers with stones and soil and leave only the branches visible.
Download the selection of branches on the left side and also use Filter – Blur – Blur at shallow depth of field (Filter> Blur> Lens Blur) as in the previous example, but the parameters Radius (Radius) put about 4-5.
Insert an image with an octopus and place this layer above all the layers with soil and below the layer with the picture.
Add an octopus style layer Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay).
Now reduce the octopus Opacity (Opacity) up to 92%. Add a mask to this layer and fill it with a linear black and white gradient to make a smooth transition effect. Treat the layer mask with a translucent black brush in the area where the octopus is next to the ice surface.
Make an active thumbnail of the octopus layer and go to Image menu – Correction – Levels (Image> Adjustments> Levels). Use the settings as in the screenshot below.
Below you can see the darkened water space.
Create a new large rectangle above the octopus and below the picture layer. Erase the area marked in red in the screenshot.
Add style to this layer. Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay). Fill (Fill) put on
Settings for the gradient.
Insert a bubble image into the document. Place them above the previous layer and below the picture layer.
Apply a blend mode to the bubble layer. Soft light (Soft Light) and reduce Opacity (Opacity) up to 50%. Add a layer mask and erase the same areas as in the previous layer.
Create a new layer and fill the area with stone and soil with a dark brown translucent gradient from top to bottom. The translucent part of the gradient should be at the bottom.
Add a new layer below the layer with a picture, in the layer styles apply Pattern overlay (Pattern Overlay), choosing the ice pattern, and style Color overlay (Coor Overlay). Erase everything except the upper area, creating a layer of ice.
Settings for layer styles.
Duplicate one of the vertically turned trees and place it above the layer with the soil. So we will create the appearance of protruding roots for the tree on the left.
Now make a copy of the picture layer, flip it vertically and move it down.
Go to the menu Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur) and apply a radius value of about 60-80 pixels.
Apply blend mode Chromaticity (Color) and reduce Opacity (Opacity) up to 40%.
Add a new layer above the previous layer and below the original layer with the image. Now place the ice texture so that it repeats only twice.
Correct this layer in Image menu – Correction – Levels (Image> Adjustments> Levels). Move the left black marker to the right until you get a similar contrast result as in the screenshot below.
Now add a mask to the layer with ice and erase the areas marked in red with a large, soft, translucent brush.
Decrease Opacity (Opacity) layer texture of ice up to 85%.
Now create a new layer under the picture layer. Increase the document so that the area of the boat is clearly visible.
Activate the tool Stamp (Stamp Tool) and texture the snow area of the boat.
Insert an image with broken glass into the document.
Transform the image of the glass with the perspective. Additionally, squeeze the image vertically, and then in the menu Editing – Transforming – Perspective (Edit> Transform> Perspective) pull the top points inside the frame.
Change the blending mode for this layer to Screen (Screen). Add a layer mask and erase the cracks in the ice near people and other objects in the foreground of the image.
On the new layer, fill the hole area with any color and in the layer styles add Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay) in linear mode. Settings below. Fill (Fill) layer set to 0%.
Add some dark spots around the edges of the hole to create an effect of ice thickness. Use for this dark blue translucent brushes.
Insert the image of the octopus again, but this time this layer should be above the layer with the picture and the layers with the ice hole.
Erase the body of the octopus, leaving only the upper part of the head above the bottom edge of the hole.
To make the octopus’s head a little darker, apply a correction layer. Levels (Levels).
Add a second image with broken glass. Transform it in the same way as the previous layer with broken glass.
Change the blending mode for this layer to Screen (Screen). Add a layer mask and erase the cracks on the figures of people.
Fill the ice-hole area with a gradient in the same way as a large hole for the ice-hole was processed the previous time.
Insert the octopus tentacles, erase the bottom, which protrudes below the edge of the ice.
Now add the layer styles to the tentacle layer: Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay) and Color overlay (Color Overlay).
Download a selection of the entire scene. Now go to the menu Editing – Copy merged data (Edit> Copy Merged). Paste the merged layer at the very top of the layers palette. Go back to the layer with the silhouettes of the trees and add shapes and objects to the foreground of the picture.
Then add a gradient from red to transparent from the front edge of the ice to the center of the human figures. Erase the bottom of the gradient (the area below the ice surface.
Load a selection of silhouettes and a layer with a gradient. Make the red colored layer invisible.
Save the selection, then make the merged layer active. Now go to the menu Filter – Sharpness – Smart Sharpen (Filter> Sharpen> Smart Sharpen).
Then increase Saturation (Saturation) for the selected part of the picture.
Without removing the selection go to the menu Editing – Copy merged data (Edit> Copy Merged) .. Now the menu Editing – Paste (Edit> Paste). The image is pasted on a new layer. Go to menu Filter – Other – Color Contrast (Filter> Other> High Pass) and set the radius to 1 pixel. Set this layer overlay mode. Overlap (Overlay) and reduce Opacity (Opacity) up to 75%.
Create a new layer below the layer with red silhouettes and paint over the blue shapes and objects in the background of the scene.
Add a gradient from blue to transparent to the shapes.
Download the selection layer with red silhouettes and invert it in the menu Selection – Inversion (Select> Inverse selection). On the toolbar, click Quick masks (Quick Mask). You should get a red tint over the silhouettes. Now take a big soft black brush and paint over red the entire area below the ice surface.
Exit quick mask mode. You get a selection of higher red silhouettes and shapes. Make active the merged layer and go to the menu Filter – Blur – Blur at shallow depth of field (Filter> Blur> Lens Blur).
Apply the following settings.
Download a selection of red silhouettes plus blue silhouettes plus an underwater part. Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + click on the thumbnail of the desired layer.
Now go to the menu Selection – Inversion (Select> Inverse selection). If you enter the quick mask mode, you will be able to see a red tint on the underground area, the shapes and silhouettes of the front and the second plan.
Exit the quick mask mode and go to the menu to apply blur to the background. Filter – Blur – Blur at shallow depth of field (Filter> Blur> Lens Blur).
Add clouds and apply a blur effect to the far cloud.
And here is the result!
