Tiny world in Photoshop

In this tutorial, we will show how to create a miniature world using stock photo resources and some interesting techniques that the Photoshop program opens for us.

The lesson was also timed to update the photobank PhotoDune, the materials of which were used as a source. Let’s start!

Sources:

Step 1

Create a new document in Photoshop size 3000? 1900 pixels. Using tool Rectangle (Rectangle Shape Tool (U)) draw a rhombus.

Step 2

Activate the tool Pen (Pen Tool (P)) and draw the left side of the diamond. Create a contour selection and fill it with a dark gray color. Duplicate the face. Display horizontally (Flip Horizontal) received copy. Create a selection of the second facet and fill it with a light gray color.

Step 3

Copy the original image of “Grass” to your computer.
Switch to File > Open as a smart object (File> Open as a Smart Object), find the grass image in the list and click “Open.”

Transfer the grass picture to the main working paper. Place it above the diamond layer. Move the cursor over the dividing line between the two layers and hold down the “Alt “. When the icon with two circles appears, click the left mouse button and apply the” Grass “layer as a clipping mask (clipping mask) to the layer with the rhombus.

Standing on the “Grass” layer, press the key combination “Ctrl + T“and zoom out so that the texture looks harmonious. If necessary, duplicate the layer with a reduced texture, and place a copy so that the whole area of the rhombus is covered.

Now add some sharpness to the grass cover. To do this, go to Filter> Sharpen> Unsharp Mask (Filter> Sharpen> Unsharp Mask). Adjust the sharpness settings based on the general view and apply small values for the parameter. Radius (Radius) and large values for the parameter Effect (Amount).

Step 4

Make the grass brighter and richer. To do this, apply a correction layer to the grassy texture layer. Color tone \ Saturation (Hue / Saturation).

Translator’s Note: the author does not indicate the settings for the correction layer, you can choose them at your discretion. either use mine:

Merge layers with rhombus, herbal texture and adjustment layer in one group. Create a selection around the contour of the diamond (Ctrl + Click on the thumbnail of the layer with a rhombus) and add a vector mask to the layer group. To do this, simply click on the “Add layer mask“at the bottom of the layers panel.

Now we will process the edges of the grass, so that it looks more realistic. Stand on the group layer mask and activate the tool. Brush (Brush Tool). Choose a round hard brush of a small size, the color of the brush is black. Treat the grass edge at the top of the diamond.

Step 5

Add soil. Repeat steps # 3 – # 4, but instead of the grass image, use the “Soil” source. Overlay this texture on the left and right side of the diamond. For convenience, create groups for each of the faces.

Step 6

Doris some roots in the soil.
Activate the tool Brush (Brush Tool). Choose a round hard brush of a small size, the color of the brush is brown. Create a new layer above all previous ones. Set the blending mode of this layer. Lightening basics (Color Dodge). Now finish the wavy roots, as in the example below.

Step 7

Add light and shade to the lawn.
To do this, use the usual round soft Brush (Brush Tool). Use white brush to lighten areas, and black brush to darken. Draw dark and light areas on different layers.

Step 8

We draw an aquarium. Create a new layer, on top of the previous ones, and fill it with white. Go to menu 3D> New shape from layer> Sphere (3D> New Shape for Layer> Sphere). Scale the sphere and place it on the lawn. When you are happy with the result, rasterize the layer with the sphere.

Double-click on the ball layer to go to the menu “Layer style“(Layer Style). Set the parameters shown in the picture below:

Duplicate the sphere layer. Set blending mode for layer copy Darkening basics (Color Burn), the opacity of the layer is reduced to 70%.

Step 9

Using the tool Oval area (Elliptical Marquee Tool) Draw an ellipse and fill the selection with black. Apply to ellipse Gaussian blur (Gaussian Blur). Change blending mode for this layer to Soft light (Soft Light), and opacity set to 80%.

The resulting blurred ellipse should be located in the lower half of the sphere. Place a layer with a blurred ellipse between the layers with spheres.
Add white highlights at the top of the sphere. To do this, create a new layer on top of the layer with a blurred ellipse and draw a white oval on it. Blur the white ellipse and apply the blending mode as for the previous layer.

Step 10

Add color to the aquarium. The correction layer will help us in this. Color tone \ Saturation (Hue / Saturation). In order for the settings to be applied only to the aquarium, you need to add a layer mask to the adjustment layer. Then lower the layer’s opacity Color tone \ Saturation (Hue / Saturation) up to 60%.
Next, create a black oval shape at the top of the sphere (hole), as shown below, and set the blending mode to Overlap (Overlay).

Translator’s Note: if after applying a correction layer you are not satisfied with the color of the aquarium, I recommend adding another additional adjustment layer “Colour“. Apply a vector mask to this layer. To do this, hold down the key Ctrl + click on the layer with the sphere, and then, standing on the “Color” adjustment layer, click on the “Add vector mask” icon, or invert the selection of the sphere and fill the space with black color on the layer mask. Set the blending mode for the Color layer to Chromaticity, Reduce the fill value at your own discretion (my fill was 60%). Below I give examples of my settings in pictures..

Step 11

Let’s start to fill the aquarium. To obtain the illusion of water, simple reception works well. Create a new layer, on top of the previous ones. Fill it with a dark gray color. Set the foreground and background color to black and white. Switch to Filter> Rendering> Clouds (Filter> Render> Clouds). Blend mode for this layer set Soft light (Soft Light), and opacity (opacity) – 80% Scale the resulting layer, reduce its size so that the corners are slightly outside the aquarium. Water should be only inside the sphere, and therefore, you need to add a layer mask (to the layer with the “Clouds” filter) and hide everything on it except for the aquarium itself.

Step 12

Stand on the mask layer with water and paint with a black brush the upper part of the aquarium (the one where the hole is).
Add a new layer. Set the blending mode for it. Soft light (Soft Light), opacity is 50%. Create a selection along the contour of the sphere. Activate the tool Brush (Brush Tool). Set the brush color to black and select a soft round brush in the brush palette. Draw the bottom of the aquarium to create more volume.

Step 13

The next step is to create a shadow from the sphere-aquarium.
For this we use the tool Ellipse (Ellipse Tool (U)). Draw an oval black shape on a new layer. Place it under the aquarium layer. Opacity of this layer lower to 60% and then apply the filter Blur (Blur).

Translator’s Note: You can use the Gaussian Blur filter with a value of 5-7 pixels.

Please note that in this step we also draw the bottom of the aquarium. To do this, simply create a new layer on top of the previous one, draw a white oval and lower its opacity.

Step 14

Add jellyfish. Open source resource with jellyfish. If your image is opened as a smart object, you need to rasterize it. Then click on the key combination Ctrl + I to invert the picture. Next, use the key combination Ctrl + Shift + U in order to discolor the image. Save the resulting file.

Transfer the resulting image with jellyfish to your working paper. If necessary, scale it. Set blending mode Darker (Darken). Duplicate the layer and set the blending mode for the copy. Darkening basics (Color Burn), opacity lower to 20%

Step 15

Activate the tool Stamp (Stamp Tool (S)). Using lawn grass as a sample, trace the bottom of the aquarium so that the grass covers the bottom of the sphere.

Step 16

Add ripples on the water. Draw a gray circle with the tool Ellipse (Ellipse Tool (U)). Apply the layer style shown in the image below. Rasterize the shape layer and apply the key combination Ctrl + I, to invert it. Set the blending mode for a circle to Overlap (Overlay), and opacity – 20%

Step 17

Let’s decorate the lawn. Add to your work document an image of a garden. Apply a layer mask to this layer and hide all elements except violet colors. Refine the mask by painting along the edges of the flowers with a black brush of small diameter. Then apply to the plant Filter> Sharpen> Unsharp Mask (Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask). Set a small radius value and a large value for the effect parameter (set values guided by a common picture).

Step 18

Repeat step 17, but place the flowers in a different place. If you want to change the color of the plants, use the adjustment layer. Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation), applying the adjustment layer as a clipping mask (clipping mask) to the flower layer.

Step 19

Add more elements to your collage, such as stones and mushrooms. Use the image below as an example.

Step 20

Guided by the previous steps, place the boat on the surface of the water. Transform and scale it using the shortcut key. Ctrl + T.

Step 21

Using any method convenient to you, add a shadow from the ship on the surface of the water. In my collage, I also placed a small bottle with a message.

Create a new layer on top of the first “Background” layer (Bacground) and fill it with a light blue color.

Step 22

Add a balloon. Copy to your computer and open in the working document image with balloons. Separate one of them from the background using any convenient tool, for example Magic wand (Magic Wand Tool). Activate the tool Move (Move Tool (V)) and place the balloon in the upper left corner.

To make the balloon look brighter and more expressive, use an adjustment layer. Color tone \ Saturation (Hue / Saturation Layer Adjustment) (as a clipping mask), as well as add a filter Contour sharpness (Unsharp Mask).

Step 23

Select another ball from the source image and repeat step # 22.
Pay attention to the location of the balloon and the main light source. In my example, the light falls on the right side, so the ball will cast a shadow on the aquarium. To draw a shadow, create a new layer under the second balloon and add a shadow to it.

Step 24

Now it’s time to decorate our collage with clouds.
There are many ways to create clouds. Now we consider one of the most simple methods. Create a new layer. Activate the tool Brush (Brush Tool), brush color is white, opacity is about 20%., Brush type is round soft. Now just draw the clouds. Then create another layer. Switch the brush color to black and draw shadows on the clouds. Then you can use tools such as Clarifier (Dodge) and Dimmer (Burn), Eraser ( Eraser Tool). To clarify the contour of the clouds is well suited tool Finger (Smudge Tool).

Step 25

Open image with birds. Use any quick selection tools and separate the birds from the background. Place them in random order above the clouds.

Step 26

Open the source material “toy plane”. Guided by the previous steps, separate it from the background, transform and scale it. Place the airplane in the upper center of the collage.

Step 27

Activate the tool Pen (Pen Tool (P)) and draw a ribbon outline that develops behind the plane.
Then apply Layer styles (Layer Style), which are shown on the images below.

Step 28

On a new layer, using a round, hard Brush (Brush Tool) small size (color – white), draw a connecting rope between the plane and the ribbon.

Step 29

Add text on the ribbon (tool Horizontalsth text(Horizontal Type Tool)).

Step 30

We come to the final step! It remains to add a shadow under the lawn-island.

Work is ready!
