Turning a photo into a fairy tale – Part II

In the second part of the lesson, we will continue to turn a child’s photo into a forest fairytale. At this stage, we will add a model, create the effect of magic pollen, add neon stars and add some small details to the composition.

And again, we will need any version of Photoshop, inspiration, attention and good mood!

We continue our work!

Step 30

Next, let’s focus on the model! First, let’s add a model image to our scene. :). Let’s go File – Post (File> Place) and select the image of a little girl. Position the girl in the center of our scene. Zoom out a little girl.

Using tool Fast selection (Quick Selection Tool (W), create an active selection around the image of the girl. Be sure to select every detail of the dress and hat. Do not worry if you have highlighted the background together with the shawl, we will fix it. Once you have created an active selection around the image of the girl, select an option Specify edge(Refine Edge).

Step 31

In the view settings, set the option On White (On White). Make sure the window Smart radius (Smart Radius) was ticked, set the value Radius (Radius) at 1.0px. In the left part of the settings there is a brush icon, select a brush and start painting the shawl, where the background is visible. Walk a few times with a brush and you can restore the fabric, but do not overdo it, otherwise, the shape of the shawl will be unattractive. Just go with a brush, where there are areas of the background.

Add a layer mask to the girl layer to hide all unnecessary background. You should have it, as in the screenshot below.

Step 32

Add shadows under the cauldron with the girl. To do this, create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N), placing the new layer below the layer with the girl.

Choose a tool Brush (Brush Tool (B). Set the following settings for the brush: The size (Size): 900px, Rigidity (Hardness): 0%, Opacity (Opacity): 40%, Pressure (flow): 100%. Draw a shadow. The shadow closer to the boiler will be more intense, the shadow on the edges of the girl’s dress is less saturated.

Step 33

Next, we need to add chiaroscuro to the image of a girl in order to combine it with the whole atmosphere. Create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N).

Using tool Clarifier (Dodge Tool (O), create light highlights, and using the tool Dimmer (Burn Tool (O), create shadows. Create light and shade, as shown in the screenshot below. Pay attention to the areas that I brighten, because the boiler is glowing. For example, a hand with a magic wand, the edge of a hat, neck and hem a boiler. A layer with light and shadows should be on top of a layer with a girl. I combined all the layers related to the girl into one group, which I named Model (Model).

Step 34

So, we come to the most exciting part of the lesson! We will create an asterisk brush. In Photoshop, there are many different brushes that few people know (with the exception of professionals). Now we will find these brushes and tune them! Go to the brush settings. There is a triangle icon in the upper right corner, click this icon and in the menu that appears, select the “Assorted Brushes” option. In the window that appears, if you press the button (OK), the current brushes will be replaced, and if you press the button To add (Append), the selected brushes will be added to the existing set of brushes.

Next, in the brush settings, select the Asterisk brush. Install The size (Size): 40px, Interval (Spacing): 32%. Thus, the stars will not be located too tightly, which will create a good spread. Next, select the parameter Form Dynamics (Shape Dynamics) and install Size fluctuation (Size Jitter): 83% Angle swings (Angle Jitter): 13% Shape oscillation (Roundness Jitter): 56%, Minimum shape (Minimum Roundness): 25%. These settings allow you to reduce the size of the stars to the minimum size, and also tilt them slightly and set them in perspective.

Next, select the parameter Scattering (Scattering) and install Scattering (Scatter): 1000% Counter (Count): 1. These settings are responsible for scattering stars.

Parameter Color dynamics (Color Dynamics) is responsible for the color of the brush and for the color change. Install Color tone fluctuation (Hue Jitter): 29% Saturation fluctuation (Saturation Jitter): 16%, Brightness fluctuations (Brightness Jitter): 2%. Thus, the stars will be painted in different colors, they will be of different brightness and saturation. Next, select the option Transition (Transfer). Install Opacity swings (Opacity Jitter): 70% Fluctuation of paint (Flow Jitter): 89%. Thus, the stars will not look the same. This will create a depth effect. Do not forget to put a tick in the parameter box Smoothing (Smoothing) to change the color of the stars and align them with the background.

Save the brush you created, we’ll come back to it later.

Step 35

The brush is ready. Now we will work on the asterisks and the boiler. First you need to create an active selection around the top of the boiler. Choose a tool Magnetic Lasso (Magnetic Lasso Tool (L) and carefully circle the edge of the boiler. Create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N).

Choose a tool Brush (Brush Tool (B). Set the following settings for the brush: The size (Size): 600px, Rigidity (Hardness): 0%, Opacity (Opacity): 100%, Pressure (flow): 100%, brush color # 00bffc. Using a brush, paint a small glow in the cauldron. I used a layer mask to hide the glow from the cauldron a little.

Change the blending mode for this layer to Linear clarifier (Add) (Linear Dodge (Add), and also reduce the layer opacity to 65%.

Create a new layer. Reduce brush size (The size(Size): 500px). Click the brush as shown in the screenshot below.

Change the blending mode for this layer to Lightening (Screen) layer opacity: 70%. Now you can cancel the active selection (Ctrl + D).

Step 36

Next, create a new layer, place this layer on top of all other layers. Change the blending mode for this layer to Chromaticity (Color) Opacity (Opacity) Layer: 55%.

Choose a tool Brush (Brush Tool (B). Set the following settings for the brush: The size (Size): 125px, Rigidity (Hardness): 0%, Opacity (Opacity): 100%, Pressure (flow): 100%, brush color # 00bffc. Draw a glow from the boiler on the girl, on the edges of the boiler and on the fabric. Try not to hit the girl’s face, because it will not be very beautiful.

Create a new layer. Choose a tool Brush (Brush Tool (B). Set the following settings for the brush: The size (Size): 100px, Rigidity (Hardness): 0%, Opacity (Opacity): 30%, Pressure (flow): 100%, brush color # 00bffc, create a feeling as if steam is erupting. The opacity of this layer is 58%.

Pay attention to the location of the layers! You should have also.

Step 37

Now add an asterisk. Create a new layer. Select your Star brush. Set the following settings for the brush: The size (Size): 25 px and 15px, Rigidity (Hardness): 0%, Opacity (Opacity): 100%, Pressure (flow): 100%, brush color # 00bffc. In the brush settings, disable the option Color dynamics (Color Dynamics) to draw stars of the same color. This layer should be placed on top of the layer with the mode Linear clarifier (Add) (Linear Dodge (Add).

Create a new layer. Settings for the brush: The size (Size): 30px, Rigidity (Hardness): 0%, Opacity (Opacity): 100%, Pressure (flow): 100%, brush color # ffbb03. In the brush settings, enable the option Color dynamics (Color Dynamics) to draw stars of different colors and shades. The opacity of this layer is 40%. Each subsequent layer should be located below the previous one.

Next, we give the stars a neon effect. For this layer, add layer styles. Internal luminescence (Inner Glow) and External glow (Outer Glow). Apply the settings shown in the screenshot below.

Add a layer style External glow (outer glow). You can create a glow effect or energy from an object.

Add a layer style Internal glow (inner glow). This style will create the effect of neon stars and give them a childish and toy look.

Create a new layer. Brush settings: The size (Size): 40px, Rigidity (Hardness): 0%, Opacity (Opacity): 100%, Pressure (flow): 100%, brush color # ffbb03. The opacity of the layer is 100%. Copy the layer styles from the previous step and paste to the created layer.

Step 38

Create a new layer. Brush settings: The size (Size): 15px, Rigidity (Hardness): 0%, Opacity (Opacity): 100%, Pressure (flow): 100%, brush color # ffe000. The opacity of the layer is 75%. I decided to add gold stars, as well as texture to them. On the new layer, add the following layer styles. Stamping (Bevel Emboss), Color overlay (Color Overlay), External glow (Outer Glow). Apply the settings shown in the screenshots below.

Stamping (Bevel Emboss). This style will add textures to asterisks.

Color overlay (Color Overlay) will add the desired color.

Step 39

Stayed last layer. In this step, we will create a steam effect using the Smoke brushes. Create a new layer, load the Smoke brush. Try using different brushes. In the screenshot below, the brushes that I used. The opacity of this layer is 45%.

I combined all the layers with the glow of stars into one group and called this group Asterisks (Star). Check the location of the layers in the screenshot below. You should have the same as me.

Step 40

Next, we will add a bokeh texture to our scene to make the atmosphere more colorful and magical. Let’s go File – Post (File> Place) and select the bokeh texture.

Zoom out the texture image, and then double-duplicate the Bokeh texture, place two texture layers on top of the mushrooms and next to the mushrooms. I placed the layers with bokeh texture in the group Interior (Interior) and using a layer mask, concealed a watermark.

All three layers with a texture of different sizes, each with its own degree of opacity and blending mode. The texture on the right side is smaller than the texture on the left. The texture next to the mushrooms is the smallest. Try to make the Boke textures proportional.

Step 41

In the next step, we will create a blurred background. Select the group with the background, the group “Mushrooms and insects”, as well as the Bokeh texture layer. Duplicate them (Ctrl + J). Next, create a merged layer of duplicate layers (Ctrl + E).

Next, go Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur). Set a blur radius of 3.0px.

To the blurred layer, add a layer mask and using a soft black brush, hide the blur in the center of the picture, on insects and on the edges of the mushrooms. Leave the darkened part of the frog blurred.

Step 42

I created a brush to paint a small cloud of pollen next to the mushrooms. The original brush was soft. Save the brush.

Create a new layer on top of all other layers. Select the brush you set up earlier. Draw a small cloud of pollen next to the mushrooms. Set the opacity for the 80% pollen layer.

Add layer styles to the pollen layer External glow (Outer Glow). Apply the settings shown in the screenshot below.

Step 43

We have completed the lesson! I congratulate you! I hope you learned a lot today, and you enjoyed my lesson. In the screenshot below, you can see the final result with the entire layer palette. Check it out!
