Volume composition of vector shapes

In this lesson, the application of the Displacement Map to vector shapes will be considered, the Clipping Mask and Layer Style will also be applied to achieve this result:

Volume composition of vector shapes

Step 1. Create a new document of the size you need.
For this lesson, the author chose the dimensions 720×480 pix. with permission 300 ppi.
Fill the new document with black (D, Alt + Backspace).

Step 2. Now you need to find an image with which we will work. The author chose a photo of the woman’s face. To achieve this effect, you can use almost any image, but to begin with, to repeat the lesson, it is best to choose something similar, that is, someone’s face.
Once you find the desired image, separate it from the background and transfer it to your working document. Adjust the layer with the face, adding brightness, contrast, sharpness, color, if all this is of course required.
You can use the whole image of the head, but the author believes that for this effect, it is better if you just leave the face, without the back of the head.

Step 3. Duplicate the face layer. Discolor it Shift +Ctrl +U. Then go to the Menu: Filter – Blur – Blur at shallow depth of field (Filter> Blur> Lens Blur).

Set the following parameters there:
AT Depth map (Depth Map) A source (Source) put – Transparency (Transparency).
AT Aperture (Iris)Form (Shap) put Hexagon(6) (Hexagon (6)), Radius (Radius) – ten, Curvaturesheet (Blade Curvature) – 0, Turn (Rotation) – 0.
Distribution (Distribution) – Uniform (Uniform).

In the next step we will tell you why we needed to apply this filter.

Step 4. Before we go any further, we need to save the received document. Make sure that the main visible layer is a black and white face with a filter applied to it. Save the document at any place convenient for you, under any name, in the format PSD. This file will be used as Displacement Map (Displacement).
After you have saved your Offset Map, hide the layer with the black and white face (by removing the eye in front of the layer thumbnail).

Now we need the Vector shapes, from which, ultimately, we will form a face. The author used many vector forms from this site: GoMedia’s Arsenal Vector Sets 2 [Hooladanders] and 3 [Hooladanders 2], but these vectors are paid. He also offers to download some forms for free, perhaps with them it will turn out quite well: Vector Pack Sample
* or you can use the vector forms offered by me * Archive 1

Once you have found the Vector forms you need, start dragging them into your working paper. If Photoshop will ask a question how to them Insert (Paste), select Smart object (Smart Object).

How you place the vector shapes. Will depend on the result of all the work.
Perhaps you decide that it is enough to simply put the forms in a random position on the face and everything, but in fact you should try to distribute them so that the curves of the lines of the forms correspond to the curves and facial features (use Free Transformation (Ctrl + T)). Of course, this should not be perfect, as we will continue to adjust the forms, but their erratic arrangement on the face will not lead to a good result.

In the author’s work, the vectors not only fit the shape of a woman’s face, but also intertwine in one direction. The weight of vectors is also well distributed (fullness of space). The nose, lips, eyes, the entire front of the face are filled with a large number of forms, while only the tips of these forms go to the temples and the back of the head.

Remember that our task is to assemble these vector shapes into one, so that a face is formed. The number of added vectors is also important. It may seem to you that the more forms you put on your face, the more complex and confusing the picture will look. On the contrary, blocking up with forms will ruin the whole desired effect. We need the black color to be visible through the forms.

* It is not necessary to use vectors in order to get such a result. Work with patterned tassels will look the same. For example, brushes from the lesson “Girl in patterns“Very well fit.
The principle of working with brushes is slightly different. You will need to create a new layer and make an imprint of the brush on it, perhaps several times in one place, for clearer lines, then the next new layer and the next imprint of the brush.
Everything that we will do further with vectors is done in the same way with brush prints *

Step 5. Now go down to the bottom of the layers palette, and select the first layer with the vector shape (or the brush print layer). Go to the Menu: Filter – Distortion – Offset (Filter> Distort> Displace). Leave Horizontal scale and vertical (Horizontal and Vertical Scale) ten, Schemecurvature (Displacement Map) put Stretch (Stretch to Fit), and Undefined areas (Undefined Areas) – Repeatboundarypixels (Repeat Edge Pixels).

When everything is set, click Yes, you will be followed by another dialog box (Select displacement map). Select there the file that we saved at the very beginning, as an offset map and click Open. The filter is applied to the first layer with a vector shape (or brush print). Now you need to do all the same, with the remaining layers with vector shapes (or brush prints). In order that this process does not take much time, use the hotkeys to repeat the effect of the filter (Ctrl + F).
That is, go to the new layer, press Ctrl + F, then the next layer and again Ctrl + F and so on with all the remaining layers.

Step 6. After you apply the Displacement Map to all layers, go down to the layers palette, to the original (colored) face layer. Now we will need to copy this layer as many times as we have layers with vector shapes (or brush prints). Move it above all layers. Now! Holding the key Alt click on this layer and drag it down so that it is between the layers with vector shapes, as soon as it seems there, release the mouse button (and you can also release the Alt key, while also releasing it). We already have two layers, that is, the clamped key Alt when transferring a layer, makes a duplicate of this layer. You are left in the same way, copy this layer to the desired amount. As a result, you should be able to do it as in the screenshot. That is, the vector layer through the layer with the original face.

Volume composition of vector shapes

Step 7. Now we need to create clipping mask. Go back up the palette to the topmost layer with the original face. In order to make a layer of clipping mask, you need either: hold down the key Alt and move between the face layer and the vector shape layer, as soon as two circles (black and white) appear in place of the cursor, click. An arrow will appear below the upper layer and it will slightly shift to the right, this will mean that the upper layer has become a clipping mask for the lower one.
Either: select the layer with the face and right-click on it, select – Createcreate clipping mask.
You will not see any changes until you make a clipping mask from the last layer with the face. As soon as all the layers with the face are in the form of a clipping mask (a layer with the down arrow), only then your image will take on the desired look.

Volume composition of vector shapes

Step 8. After you finish with Clipping Masks, your image will take on a shape woven from a variety of lines. But still this is not the end result.
Go to the topmost layer with the vector shape and apply to it:
Layer styleShadow (Drop Shadow) (double-click on the layer, thereby invoking the Layer Style window). Set the following parameters there: Opacity (Opacity) 90%, Angle (Angle) – 140s, Offset (Distance) – ten, Swipe (Spread) – ten, The size (Size) – 20.

Now copy this Layer Style (with the left mouse button on the layer style – Copy the layer style), then paste it into all other layers with vector shapes (with the left mouse button on the layer – Paste the layer style).

Volume composition of vector shapes

Step 9. After applying the Layer Style, we achieved the final result.
In this step, the author has applied Radial gradientVolume composition of vector shapes to the layer so that it fits our image, and perhaps highlighted some details.
* It is better to apply the gradient on the very first layer, using the Gradient (G) tool, from any light color to the transparent one. Or, create a new layer above the first one, fill it with any color, set the Fill layer level to 0% and apply a Layer Style – Overlay Gradient to this layer. You can also experiment with blending modes. *

Volume composition of vector shapes

* If after applying a gradient, unnecessary brush or vector prints appear on the background, they can be removed as follows. Holding key Ctrl, Click on the thumbnail of the face layer. A face selection will appear, invert the selection (Shift +Ctrl +I). And now, without removing the selection, alternately walk through the layers with vector shapes (or brush prints) while pressing Delete.*

In conclusion, the author added text to the image and darkened the neck. He also increased the contrast to give greater showiness.
* you can use the tools “Dimmer”Volume composition of vector shapes and “Clarifier” Volume composition of vector shapes. Hide the background layers so you only have a face woven from lines. Go to the very last layer and click Shift +Ctrl +Alt +E, this command will merge all layers into a separate layer. Now return visibility to layers with background. And tools “Clarifier” and “Dimmer“, Walk on the light and dark areas on this layer. Do not forget that the closer to us an object, such as a nose, the brighter it is, the farther from us is an object, such as a neck, the darker it is. *

This technique can be applied to any object and any vector shapes (brush prints, shapes). The principle is to use a displacement map to force an object, as if to wrap another object. Well, then only your imagination, the use of layer styles, some sort of filters, adjustment layers, etc.

I hope you liked the lesson, and you learned from it, something useful for yourself.
I wish you good luck in execution.
