We offer you a translation of video tutorial on portrait retouching. This lesson will describe the process of retouching with the creation of a delightful effect in the end. You will learn how to clean the skin from defects, apply the effect of Dodge and Burn, add makeup, make expressive look and much more.
Note: attention, the author used a paid image of the model from the site www.editablephotos.com. To complete the lesson you will need fractals and light highlights, which you can download here.
First, we need to get rid of the defects on the skin, so let’s move the image into our document, create a new layer (Crl + N), use the tool Healing Brush Tool (Healing Brush) (J) with a hardness of approximately 20%. Let’s call the new layer clean (don’t forget to tick the top in Sample all Layers (Sample from all layers)) and remove minor defects on the skin of the face (acne, acne, ruts, etc.). In the area of the mouth, nose, chin, and under the eyes, there are larger irregularities, which we will remove in the next step.
Create a new layer (you can name it Mixer Brush). Choose a tool MixerBrush with zero stiffness and set the brush settings on top of 10%. Again do not forget to put a tick in Sample all Layers (Sample from all layers). Let’s go over the face of our model in the area of irregularities and how to smooth the skin to achieve the best effect. Also, do not forget about the neck area. At the end, the skin of the model should be smoother and more pleasant-looking.
Now apply the Dodge and Burn effect. For this we go Layer–New–Layer(Layer – New – Layer) and call it Dodge and Burn. Overlay mode put Overlay(Overlap) and check the box next to Fillwithnewoverlayneutralcolor (50% gray) (Fill the overlap with a neutral color (50% gray). Use the tool DodgeTool (Brightener) with a soft brush and opacity of 5% and lighten the bright areas on the skin. To make your eyes more expressive, it is proposed to walk along the contour of the eyes and on the eyelids for their greater selection. Do not forget the lips.
Also lighten the glare on the eyes and the eyeballs. As soon as you get the effect, go to the tool. BurnTool ( Dimmer) and darken dark areas, also with a small percentage Exposure(Exposure). Walk on the eyebrows, dark eye contours and eyelashes. Now we can see how the face of our model is becoming more expressive.
Now proceed to the imposition of makeup. Let’s make a shadow over our model’s eyes. Create a new layer, name its makeup and apply the blending mode. Soft Ligt (Soft light). Use a soft brush with color # с87344 and go through the brush for centuries. Apply the layer mask and remove unnecessary strokes (if any) with eyebrows, eyes, forehead, etc. To achieve the best effect, you can change the opacity and shading of the brush. Create a new adjustment layer Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation) with settings
Hue (Color tone): -26;
Saturation (Saturation): – 48;
Lightness (Lighting): +11
and apply it as a clipping mask for the layer with shadows.
Create a new layer. Let’s call it make up 2 with blending mode SoftLight (Soft light) and a soft brush with color # a744cb draw the shadows under the eyes below. Apply a layer mask in the eye area and erase with a soft brush the brush strokes that have come out on them (if any). Create a new adjustment layer Hue/Saturation (Hue / Saturation) with settings:
Hue (Color tone): +16;
Saturation (Saturation): -37;
Lightness (Lighting): + 18
and apply this layer as a clipping mask for the previous layer.
Create a new adjustment layer Hue/Saturation (Hue / Saturation) with Soft Light blending mode, 60% opacity and with settings
Hue (Color tone): -4;
Saturation (Saturation): – 31;
Lightness (Lighting): +16.
On the mask layer black, soft black brush, gently highlight the lips.
Now let’s merge all the makeup layers and the new adjustment layer into one group and name it makeup.
Create a new adjustment layer Selective Color (Selective color correction) with settings:
For red (red): Cyan – 61; Magenta + 15; Yellow +36; Black + 39;
For yellows: Cyan +21; Magenta + 76;
For Blacks: Cyan +4; Magenta + 5; Yellow +8.
Make a mask of this correction layer of black (Сtrl + i) and a large white brush, go through the hair.
Create a new adjustment layer Color Balance (Color balance) with settings:
For Shadows (Shadows): – 2; -6; – 3;
For Midtones: -10; ten; ten;
For Highlights: 13; 3; -3.
With the balance of color we are finished. Now we can see how the model has changed even more. Duplicate the adjustment layer Color Balance (Color balance) to make the photo even more rich and merge all the layers into one (Alt + Shift + Ctrl + E).
The eyes of the model seem to be not exactly the same. Her right eye does not seem as slanting as the left. For the fix, let’s apply the filter Liquify (Plastic) and slightly tighten the right eye of the model.
Create a new layer and apply the blending mode for it. Overlay. The image will become too bright. Don’t let that scare you. Now use the Lighting Effects filter. Filter – Render – LightingEffects (Filter – Drawing – Light Effects). Apply blending mode for this layer. Overlay (Overlap). Reduce the opacity of this layer to 60%.
Create a new adjustment layer Levels (Levels) with settings: 0; 1.05; 255.
Create a new adjustment layer GradientMap (Gradient map) with gradient from 1e2f5f to 8f32c5 and apply blend mode Color (Colour). Reduce the opacity of this layer to 7%.
Create a new layer with overlay mode. ColorDodge (Lightening the basics). Use a brush with different colors to paint the background # 453421, # 214534, # 19231e, # 1f1923.
Create a new layer with overlay mode.Screen(Screen). Paint the background again, but in different colors # 725d38, # 724305, # 38452f.
Now move the lens flare 5 with the blending mode to our image. Screen (Screen).
Create a new adjustment layer Hue/Saturation (Hue / Saturation) and change Hue (Color tone): -6.
Transfer to our document another 4-2 fractal and also apply to it the blending mode Screen (Screen) and place it where your creative flair prompts you.
Place another 4-3 fractal with blending mode Lighten (Lighting) in our document and arrange it where you like. Create a new adjustment layerHue/Saturation(Hue / Saturation) and add Hue: +10.
Create a new adjustment layer Vibrance(Vibration) with settings:
Vibrance (Vibration): +35
Saturation (Saturation): +4
