In this tutorial we will create an interesting abstract effect for text using the tool. Pen (Pen Tool) and grunge brushes. I will show you how to draw thin fibers with the Pen Tool and apply them to the label.
This lesson is of moderate difficulty, so some steps may seem difficult, but why not try it!
Note: the lesson is made in Photoshop CS6 – so many screenshots for the lesson may look unusual for users of earlier versions.
This is what the end result of this lesson will look like:
To complete the task we will need the following resources:
Create a new document of size 1200 px X 600 px with a light gray background. Then activate the tool Brush (Brush Tool). Use a white soft brush and draw a bright spot in the center of the image.
Translator’s Note: brush size is about 300-400 pixels.
Create a new layer. Using brushes “Grunge”, draw on it a stroke over a bright spot. Use the function Scaling (Scele) in order to create a perspective, since we will use this element as the basis on which the text will be placed.
Create a new layer. Activate the tool Horizontal text (Horizontal Type Tool). Choose from the list of fonts any you like. Create an inscription using black color for the text.
Right-click on the text layer. In the submenu that appears on the screen, select the item “Convert to smart object“.
Now let’s turn to the transformation functions again, this time we will use Tilting (Skew). Activate this function and transform the text, focusing on the position of the grunge base.
This is what should happen after the transformation of the text:
Activate the tool Brush (Brush Tool). Go to the brush set and select one of the loaded grunge brushes. The color of the brush is black.
Set the opacity and flow values as shown in the example below:
Add a vector mask (layer mask) to the text layer. Draw some areas of text on the layer mask.
When working with text and layer mask, use the example below to achieve the desired result:
Now you can begin to add fibers. To do this, activate the tool Pen (Pen Tool) and draw a wave-like outline on a new layer.
To stroke this outline, we will use a simple round rigid brush. When tracing the contour, make sure that the checkbox next to is active.Simulate brush pressure“(Simulate Brush).
Translator’s note: in order to circle the contour, activate the Pen tool, and then right-click on the contour. In the submenu, use the “Path Outline” item.
We drew the first fiber. Duplicate the layer with it several times. Using tools Move (Move Tool) and Transform (Transform) place the fibers as you like. Then combine the fibers in a group.
Translator’s Note: I recommend initially drawing 2-3 contours (on different layers) and creating fibers from them. It diversifies your work.
Create a copy of the group. Then go to Transform and use Distortion (Distort), change the appearance of the fiber group. You should have an effect similar to a strand of hair.
Continue adding fiber using the tool. Pen (Pen Tool) and copies of groups.
Now load the Spray brush. Use the brush you like from the set and decorate the text (use the brush on a new layer).
Now add dark streaks to the text. To do this, activate the tool Brush (Brush Tool). Choose a soft round brush from the brush set and set the hardness to 60%.
You can also add small splashes around the text.
At this stage, you get a similar result:
We come to the last step.
Create a merged copy of all layers. Then apply a filter to this layer. Colored tiles (Patchwork). Settings are listed below.
We got such an interesting effect:
Now mask the top layer, leaving only the bottom part visible in the text area.
It remains to add color to our work. For this we use corrective layers.
Selective color correction (Selective color):
Activate the black round soft Brush (Brush Tool) and process the layer mask of the Selective Color layer as shown in the example below (red areas).
The lesson is over! This is the final result I got (click on the image to enlarge it):
I hope you enjoy this lesson, and it will be useful to you in the future!
Have a nice mood! See you in the next lessons.
