Bright design for text in photoshop

In this Photoshop tutorial, we will create a stunningly beautiful text effect. You will learn to combine different elements in different applications to create a complete work.

Materials for the lesson:

Step 1. Creating and editing text
Translator’s Note: In this lesson, the author uses for some techniques the program Adobe Illustrator. However, with a good knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, you can easily perform the same actions that I would recommend to you. Tutorial Photoshop – Description of tools.
I wish you success!

To get started, open the program Adobe Illustrator, select bold and write the word abbreviation. You can use the font Futura Extra Bold Condensed, it is quite suitable for this lesson.

Now we will give each of our letters individuality. To do this, convert the text into curves by clicking on the text with the right mouse button and selecting the command “Create Outlines” or click on Ctrl + Shift + O. Then ungroup the elements by pressing the keyboard shortcut on the keyboard. Ctrl + Shift + U. Now move the corners of the letters using the tool. Direct selection tool.

Using the Palette Align (Alignment), make the letters equidistant from each other.

Step 2. Create a new document in Adobe Photoshop. Importing text
Create a new document, settings, see the image below.

Copy the letters in Adobe Illustrator and paste them into Adobe Photoshop, when pasting them into a new document, select the option “As a layer-shape”.

Our task at this stage is to separate the letters so that each is on a separate layer. To do this, make a copy of the new shape layer as many as the letters in your word, abbreviation. Then select the tool Path Selection Tool (A) (Tool “Contour selection”) and from each duplicate of the shape layer select and delete unnecessary elements.

At the end of the stage, create a group for each letter (separate layer).

Step 3. Bridgehead for design
Whenever you start to create something – start with sketches, sketches of individual elements, putting them together, painting on the way or, on the contrary, removing unnecessary. The author drew his sketch, so he roughly imagined how his idea would look. The idea that arises in the head, as a rule, looks abstract without any details, and the sketch helps to improve it. Believe me, it helps – do not keep the idea in your head until the last!

Create a new layer on top of the letters. Using tool Line tool (U) (Line tool), drawing on your sketch, divide the letters into segments, which will be filled with different colors in the future.

Below, the author gave an approximate palette of colors that he will use in his work. It is not necessary to use it at all, you have your imagination at your disposal!

Now let’s start the most interesting thing – create! Move to the first group of layers, the author is the letter “F”. Create a new layer on top of the shape layer, right-click on the layer and select the item Create a Clipping Mask (Create clipping mask). Choose a tool Polygonal Lasso Tool (L) (Polygonal Lasso tool) and make a selection of one segment, then fill it with the appropriate color.

Repeat for the remaining segments of the letter. Make sure that each color element is located on a separate layer, then it will be easier for you to manipulate them. Continue to work until you fill the letter with color, and do not get confused in the group of layers.

Repeat the previous steps for the remaining letters – create a new layer, create a clipping mask, fill it with the necessary color.

Step 4. Adding details and colors
We got the job, completely filled with different colors. Further in the course of the lesson we will improve it.

Add light and shadow to our elements of each letter. Select the desired layer, then block the transparency of the layer pixels – in the Layers Palette, under the blending modes, select the option “Maintain pixel transparency”. Next with the tool Brush Tool (B) (Brush tool) add a different color.

Next, the author added a few more elements of different colors.

Again block the layer opacity and add colors.

To give depth to color, the author used the following method: created a new layer, selected with the tool Polygonal lasso Tool (L) (Tool “Polygonal Lasso”), then brush a little color overlay. In fact, it is not necessary that this method, this stage, the imposition of different colors on the letters, depends on your skills and imagination. Do as you like!

For a variety of pictures, you can add other geometric shapes, as the author did – by adding an oval, filling it with a purple color, and removing the excess.

Keep adding details.

Using tool Pen tool (P) (Pen tool) draw an arbitrary shape to your taste.

Next, the author separated the elements with white lines. Created a new layer and then selection, and filled it with white.

While our letter is still too pronounced. Let’s add some more elements to make it look like an assembled object, which is folded into a letter. Make a selection on a separate layer, fill it with a solid color. Lock the layer (Preserve the transparency of the pixels), then add a few other colors with a brush for depth. That is, everything is as before.

After the first letter has become an independent art object, you can proceed to the rest of the letters.

The author repainted one of the elements, Blocked the transparency of the layer, then clicked Alt + backspace, fill it with new color.

Gradually add additional details and do not forget to give depth to solid color, with the help of shadows and other shades.

Then, as with the first letter, work with the edges of the letter, making it individual.

And so to the last letter in your word.

Step 5. Creating vector lines.

Note: To create such lines in Photoshop, you can use fractal brushes, for example Fractal # 4, or draw them yourself using Ph toolsotoshop (Create spectacular patterns in Photoshop – example 4).

The text at this stage is complete. Now we can add interesting lines using Adobe Illustrator. Save your work in jpeg format. Open in Illustrator. Lock the layer in the Layers Palette. Create a new layer on top of the main one.

Create a bleed. Using the Pen Tool, draw two different lines near each other. Fill each with different colors to get a beautiful transition effect between them. Select two lines and press Ctrl + Alt + B to create a blend. Using the options, you can edit the blending settings through the Object – Blend – Blend Options menu. If necessary, change the colors of the lines.

Create such lines for the remaining letters.

Next, move the lines created in Adobe Photoshop. Copy and paste each group of lines separately, as smart objects.

To hide some parts of the new objects, create a mask, select the necessary zone and fill it with black.

Or drag the lines below another layer so that it hides the excess.

Transfer and position the rest of the lines in Adobe Photoshop, as you like.

Step 6. The background
Create a new layer below all letters. Fill it with a gradient.

Create a new layer on top of the gradient layer. Press key “D” to reset the default colors. Create clouds through the filter Filter – Render – Clouds (Filter – Rendering – Clouds). Change the layer’s overlay mode to Blending mode – Soft Light (Blend Mode – Soft Light).

If you do not like the created effect, you can hide it under the mask. Remove excess in the center of work.

From the archive with coffee stains, select the 1.JPEG file and drag it between the letters and the back layer.

Double-click on a layer in the Layers Palette to bring up the window Layer Style. First, change the blending mode to Screen (Lightening). In the same section, find the option below. Blend if (Overlay if). Pressing the key “Alt” Drag the slider half as shown in the image below. This will blend the layers together better.

Duplicate the layer to enhance the effect. Hide excess spots under the mask layer.

Add the following image, nebula, to the document. Place on top of the coffee stain. Use the layer mask to remove the bright spot in the center of the image. Change the blending mode to Screen (Lightening).

Step 7. More fantasy
Using tool Brush Tool (B) (Tool “Brush”) add glowing spots on the letters. Create a new layer on top of the letters. Adjust the brush in the Brush Palette as shown below.

A little bit to revive the picture will help the next image, wings. Drag the image into the document, position and resize if necessary.

To embed the wing in our work we need to remove the color and leave only the form. Therefore, click Ctrl + U, to open settings Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation). Change the brightness settings to -100.

Using the window Layer Style add gradient settings see below.

Duplicate the wing layer. Create a blank layer on top of the duplicate, select both layers, click Ctrl + E, to combine. Flip duplicate wing horizontally.

Let’s try to create a brush in Adobe Illustrator.

Note: You can achieve the same result in Photoshop using the Pen tool, Outline stroke, Transform, and roughly the same procedure.

Using the Line Tool, create lines. Stroke Thickness Stroke set to 20 pt. Arrange the lines so that there are no gaps between them.

Open the Paintbrush Palette (F5). Select the lines and drag them to the palette. In the dialog box that appears, select New Art Brush and click OK. Next, you will be offered options to customize the brush, click OK to complete the process.

Create a curved line with the Pen Tool. Select a line and select a new brush in the Brush Palette. Then convert the brush into an object through the menu Object – Expand Appearance. Ungroup the lines and change the color as desired.

Place the object in Adobe Photoshop as a smart object. For a smooth transition, use a layer mask.

Let’s give the picture a little more depth. Choose a round hard brush Brush tool (B) (Brush tool). In the Brush Palette, play with the settings. Scattering (“Scattering”) and Color Dynamics (“Dynamics of color”), then swipe several times on the canvas, unwanted, large points can be deleted.

Now we will create another brush using Adobe Photoshop. First, open the butterfly image. Separate the image from the white background, open the selection settings Select – Color Range (Highlight – Color range). Click on the pipette on the white background to create a selection.

Invert selection Ctrl + Shift + I, then cut the butterfly on a separate layer Ctrl + J (Cut to a new layer). So we got a clean butterfly image. Layer with a white background is desirable to remove. Click Ctrl + U, to open settings Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation), remove the Brightness completely.

Select the entire image with Rectangular marquee tool (M) (Rectangular area tool), then define the drawing as a brush Edit – Define Brush Preset (Editing – Define a brush).

Now apply the finished brush to your work.

Let’s go back to Adobe Illustrator. Create some simple lines using the method we used earlier. Draw tool Pen tool two lines, then through the settings Object – Blend – Blend Options fill the space with additional lines. Use white color. Copy the object in Adobe Photoshop.

Note: You can draw this element yourself in Photoshop using Photoshop tools (We create spectacular patterns in Photoshop – example 4).

Arrange the lines as you see fit, rasterize the layer, then blur using a filter. Filter – Blur – Gaussian blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur).

The edges of the lines can be softened either by using a layer mask, painting with a black brush along the edges, or by removing with a soft eraser Eraser tool (E) (Eraser tool).

Create a white, thin ellipse. Apply filter Filter – Blur – Gaussian blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur). Using tool Rectangular marquee tool (M) (Tool “Rectangular area”) select the half of the ellipse, press the key “Delete”. In the image below, see the steps described.

Add arbitrary text.

Open the image of the erased texture. Expand it and stretch to the size of the working canvas.

Open the window Layer Style and change the overlay settings: Blending mode – Multiply (Blend Mode – Multiplication), Opacity (Opacity) 35%. Also, change the settings Blend if (Overlay if) as shown below.

On top of all layers, create a new adjustment layer. Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Curves (Layer – New adjustment layer – Curves).

Option work translator.
