Cooking chocolate cake in Photoshop

In this tutorial, we will create mouth-watering letters in the form of a chocolate cake using styles, textures and a volumetric shape generator.

Materials for the lesson:

Step 1

Download the file with the textures that were used in the lesson (Link in the archive). .

Step 2

Create a new document in Photoshop (Ctrl + N) and tool Horizontal text (Horizontal Type Tool) (T) write the word “Cake” in “Pacifico” font.

Step 3

Set in Photoshop a set of operations for creating 3d-objects. Delete the background layer so that you have only one text layer left.

Step 4

Apply style to text layer. Color overlay (Color Overlay): # 737373. Then apply the operation “www.psd-dude.com 3D shape”.

Step 5

In the “3d effect by psddude” group, find the “shadow” layer and delete it. Select all visible layers and merge them (Ctrl + E). Name the resulting layer “Cake Layer 1”.

Step 6

Go to menu Layer> Layer Style> Global Lighting (Layer> Layer Style> Global) and configure this:

Step 7

Create two copies of the “Cake Layer 1” layer and name them “Cake Layer 2” and “Cake Layer 3”. Multiple styles should be applied to each copy. Let’s start with the “Cake Layer 3” layer:

Casting a shadow (Drop Shadow): Mode – Multiplication.

Color overlay (Color Overlay): Mode – Multiplication, Color – # fda8a8.

Pattern overlay (Pattern Overlay): the “cake 4” pattern from the PAT file.

Step 8

Select the “Cake Layer 2” layer and lower it by 5 pixels using the tool Move (Move Tool) (V). Then apply the following styles:

Drop Shadow (Drop Shadow): Mode – Multiplication.

Stamping (Bevel Emboss): Style – Inner Bevel, Method – Smooth, Backlight Mode – Overlap, Shadow Mode – Multiplication.

Color overlay (Color Overlay): Mode – Overlap, Color – # b8825e.

Pattern overlay (Pattern Overlay): Mode – Soft light, Pattern – “cream 1”.

Gloss (Satin): Mode – Overlap.

Step 9

Select the “Cake Layer 1” layer and lower it by 5 pixels. Apply the following styles:

Casting a shadow (Drop Shadow): Mode – Multiplication.

Stamping (Bevel Emboss): Style – Inner Bevel, Method – Smooth, Backlight Mode – Overlap, Shadow Mode – Multiplication.

Color overlay (Color Overlay): Mode – Overlap, Color – # fda8a8.

Pattern overlay (Pattern Overlay): Mode – Soft light, Pattern – “cake 4”.

Step 10

Write the word “Cake” again. It must be written in the same font of the same size as the first time. Name this layer “Cake Top 1”. Apply the following styles:

Casting a shadow (Drop Shadow): Mode – Multiplication.

Stamping (Bevel Emboss): Style – Inner bevel, Method – Smooth, Backlight Mode – Dimming Base, Shadow Mode – Multiplication.

Pattern overlay (Pattern Overlay): Mode – Soft light, Pattern – “cake 1 by psddude”.

Step 11

Create a copy of the “Cake Top 1” layer and name it “Cake Top 2”. Change the pattern to “cake 2 by psddude”.

Step 12

Add a mask to the “Cake Top 2” layer. Black brush paint over the top of the text.

Additionally, you can add another layer for other colors of the cake. Set its mode Overlap (Overlay). Use green for pistachio or magenta for bilberry.

Step 13

It remains only to add chocolate. Create a new layer and name it “Chocolate.” Use a hard brush to draw chocolate drips on the cake. As an alternative to the brush, use these vector shapes.

Apply the following styles to the “Chocolate” layer:

Stamping (Bevel Emboss): Style – Inner Bevel, Method – Smooth, Backlight Mode – Lightening, Shadow Mode – Multiplication.

Color overlay (Color Overlay): Mode – Normal, Color – # 441e0b.

Gloss (Satin): Mode – Dimming the base (Color Burn), Color – # 581111.

In the end, create a shadow from the cake and add the inscription chocolate.
