Cooking delicious text from waffle cookies in Photoshop

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create text from waffle cookies in Adobe Photoshop using the font as a base. First we will create a pattern for the text, and then we will create the text from the waffle cookie. At the end we will add chocolate and cream as decoration for our text.

Let’s get started!

The final result:

Step 1

Create a new document 24 x 26 px, then we go View – Show – Grid (View> Show> Grid) to activate the grid, and then go Preview – Snap To – Grid Lines (View> Snap To> Grid) to snap to the grid. Press the keys (Ctrl + K) to bring up the window Installations (Preferences), then select the setting Guides, mesh, etc. (Guides, Grid Slices) and set the settings that are shown in the screenshot below. During the whole lesson, I will turn off the grid visibility (Ctrl + ‘) so that you can see better. The grid will facilitate your work when creating shapes.

Step 2

In the toolbar, set the foreground color to # F2C088. Choose a tool Line (Line Tool), in the settings of this tool, set the value Thickness (Weight) by 7 px. Next, draw the following vector shapes.

Step 3

In the layers panel, select all layers with drawn vector shapes, then right-click on the selected layers and select the option in the menu that appears Combine shapes (Merge Shapes). For the layer with the merged shape, apply the layer styles. Set the settings for the layer styles shown in the screenshots below.

Step 4

Hold down (Ctrl) + click on the thumbnail of the layer with the created shape to load the active selection around the shape. Next, go Selection – Modification – Compress (Select> Modify> Contract), set the value Compress (Contract) 3 px. Press the button Create New Layer (Create a new layer) at the bottom of the layers panel. Set foreground color to #FFFFFF, select tool Fill (Paint Bucket Tool). Fill the selection. Once you have completed the fill, press the keys (Ctrl + D) to cancel the active selection, and then decrease the value Fillings (Fill) to 0%. To save the pattern, just go Editing – Define a pattern (Edit> Define Pattern) and in the window that appears give the name of your pattern, click the OK button.

Step 5

Press the keys (Ctrl + N) to create a new document 2000x 1200 px.

Step 6

Choose a tool Horizontal text (Horizontal Type Tool), install the Insaniburger font. Write the text “SWEET” , font size 450 px, font color # E3A45D. Once you’ve added text, apply a layer style. Shadow (Drop Shadow), set the settings for this layer style, which are shown in the screenshot below.

Step 7

Duplicate the text layer (Ctrl + J) that you created in the previous step. On the duplicate text layer, change the text color to # 68524F, and then right-click on the duplicate layer and select the option in the menu that appears Clear layer style (Clear Layer Style). Now press the up arrow key 4 times to move the text 4 pixels up.

Step 8

Duplicate the duplicate text layer (Ctrl + J) that you just shifted. Once on the new duplicate of the text layer, once again slide up 4 pixels up using the same up arrow key. Change the color for this duplicate text to # E3A45D. Make sure that you are on a new duplicate of the text layer, again duplicate this text layer. Shift the new duplicate of the text layer 4 pixels up now, and then change the text color to # 68524F. Finally, duplicate the new duplicate of the layer again, and then move the created duplicate of the layer 4 pixels up and then change the text color to # E3A45D. At the end, the text should look like the screenshots below.

Step 9

Being on the topmost layer with the text, duplicate it (Ctrl + J). Now move the duplicate text layer 4 pixels up, and then apply layer styles to this duplicate text layer. Apply the settings for these layer styles that are shown in the screenshots below. When you apply the layer style Pattern overlay (Pattern Overlay), don’t forget to use the pattern that we saved at the beginning of the lesson.

Step 10

Duplicate the text layer (Ctrl + J) to which you applied the layer styles in the previous step. On the newly created duplicate layer, right-click on the duplicate layer and select the option in the menu that appears Clear layer style (Clear Layer Style) and then reduce Fill (Fill) to 0%. To this duplicate layer, apply the layer style, as well as the settings shown in the screenshot below.

Step 11

Set foreground color to # 39180F, select tool Pen (Pen Tool). Draw an approximate shape, as shown in the first screenshot below. On a layer with a drawn figure, press the keys (Shift + Ctrl + [‘) to shift the layer with the drawn figure down in the layers panel, and also positioned behind the letter T ” , as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 12

Apply layer styles to the layer with the drawn shape you created in the previous step. Make settings for these layer styles, which are shown in the screenshots below.

Step 13

Choose a tool Rounded Rectangle (Rounded Rectangle Tool), and then right-click on the canvas to open the settings window Create a rounded rectangle. (Create Rounded Rectangle). Set the settings that are shown on the first screenshot below, and then click the ‘OK’ button. Position the shape you just created, as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 14

Apply layer styles to the shape you created in the previous step. Make settings for these layer styles, which are shown in the screenshots below.

Step 15

Using the same tool Rounded Rectangle (Rounded Rectangle Tool), right-click on the canvas to open the settings window. Create a rounded rectangle. (Create Rounded Rectangle). Set the settings that are shown on the first screenshot below, and then click the ‘OK’ button. Position the shape you just created, as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 16

Choose a tool Add anchor point (Add Anchor Point Tool). Approximately add anchor points, as shown in the screenshot below. Now select the tool Arrow (Direct Selection Tool) and using this tool, by selecting each anchor point in turn, which is highlighted in the screenshot below, move them down using the down arrow key, as shown in the second screenshot below.

Step 17

Apply layer styles to the shape you created in the previous step. Make settings for these layer styles, which are shown in the screenshots below.

Step 18

Load an active selection around the top layer with text. Next, go Selection – Modification – Compress (Select> Modify> Contract), set the value Compress (Contract) 25 px. Press the button Create New Layer (Create a new layer) at the bottom of the layers panel. Make sure the foreground color is set to white, select the tool Fill (Paint Bucket Tool), and then just click inside the selected selection to fill, as shown in the screenshot below. Once you have filled, press the keys (Ctrl + D) to cancel the active selection.

Step 19

Make sure that you are on the layer that you created in the previous step, right-click on this layer and in the appeared window select the option Convert to smart object (Convert to Smart Object). Next, go Filter – Distortion – Zigzag (Filter> Disort> Zig Zag), in the settings of this filter, set amount (Amount) 6, Folds (Ridges) 7 and Style (Style) Circles on the water (Pond Ripples), and then press the ‘OK’ button. In the layers panel, decrease the value Fillings (Fill) up to 25% for a given layer with a smart object.

Step 20

Apply layer styles to the smart object layer you created in the previous step. Make settings for these layer styles, which are shown in the screenshots below.

Step 21

Duplicate the layer with the smart object (Ctrl + J), while on the duplicate layer, right-click on the layer and in the appeared window select the option Clear style layer (Clear Layer Style). Make sure you are on a duplicate of the layer you just created, now reduce the value Fillings (Fill) to 0% and then apply the following layer styles and settings, which are shown in the screenshots below.

Step 22

In the layers panel, select all the layers you have created at the moment to group them into one group (Ctrl + G). For the layer with the created group, apply the following layer style and settings that are shown in the screenshots below.

Step 23

In the layers panel, go to the bottommost layer with Background (Background) and click on the lock to unlock the layer. Set the foreground color to # 335671, and then select the tool Fill (Paint Bucket Tool), fill the layer with the selected color shade. Next, to the unlocked layer, apply the layer styles as well as the settings shown in the screenshots below.
