In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to create a 3D retro halftone effect for text that can be used to create a rock band cover using some interesting shapes, the Text tool and layer styles.
The final result.
Step 1. New document and text.
Open Photoshop and create a new document. 1250 x 1000px.
In this step, we will create a typographic element. Choose a tool Text tool (T) (text) and write your text. I used the Code Pro font from FontFabric and wrote the word Rock black colour. Rasterize the text layer Type> Rasterize Type Layer (Font – Rasterize the text layer).
Choose a tool Rectangular marqueetool (M) (Rectangular area). Create a selection around the last letter, then right-click and select Layer via Cut (Cut to a new layer).
Select the layer with the cut out letter and using Free transform tool (Free transform) (Ctrl + T), flip horizontally (Flip Horizontal).
Choose a tool Text tool (T) (Text) write another word in the same font. Font size should be slightly larger. Rasterize the text layer.
If you use the same font as me, then select the tool Rectangle tool (M) (Rectangle) and create two rectangles on the letter N to align the letter.
Now add some shapes. Choose a tool Pen tool (P) (pen) mode Shape (Figure) and create a form under the letter R, as shown below. When you are satisfied with the result, duplicate the shape layer (Ctrl + J), flip horizontally and move under the letter K.
Merge all layers except background into one (Ctrl + E). Then using Free Transform Tool (Ctrl + T)> Skew (Free Transform – Tilt) tilt by pulling the middle knot up by 8 °. Rename the layer to Rock On Src. We will duplicate this layer several times.
Duplicate the text layer. Rename it to Rock On Gradient and apply a layer style. Gradient overlay (Gradient overlay) color # 4CACFB and # 4BB9E8 with the parameters shown below.
Duplicate the Rock On Src layer and drag above the gradient layer. Rename to Rock On Highlight, install Fill (Fill) at 0%, Opacity (Opacity) at 90% and apply layer styles Bevel and Emboss (Embossed) and Satin (Gloss) with the parameters shown below.
Duplicate the Rock On Src layer again, move above all layers. InstallFill (Fill) by 0% Opacity (Opacity) at 90% and apply a layer style Bevel and Emboss (Embossed) with the parameters listed below. Rename the layer to Rock On Emboss.
Step 4. Halftone Effect
Now create an interesting halftone effect. Above all layers create a new layer. Choose a tool Gradient tool (G) (Gradient) from black to white and with clamped Shift stretch the gradient from the top of the canvas to the bottom.
Next, apply a filter to the gradient layer. Filter> Pixelate> Color Halftone (Filter – Layout – Colored halftone) with Max. Radius (Max. Radius) 6 px and 45 ° for all channels. Set the Fill of this layer to 50% and change the blending mode to Soft light (Soft light).
Create a layer selection. Rock on src, To do this, hold down the Ctrl key and click on the layer icon. Go to the layer with a halftone pattern and create a layer mask Layer> Layer Mask> Reveal Selection (Layer – Layer – Mask – Show Selected Area).
Add a layer – fill Layer> New Fill Layer> Gradient (Layers – New Layer – Fill – Gradient) from white to black. Opacity (black) 0%.
Change Fill (Fill) this layer by 50% and create a clipping mask Layer> Create Clipping Mask (Layer – Create Clipping Mask).
Duplicate the Rock On Src layer again, move above all layers. Rename to Rock On Gradient Highligh. Change Opacity (Opacity) up to 30% and Fill (Fill) to 0%. Add a Gradient Overlay layer style from Black to White, with opacity 0% black and 50% white.
Duplicate the Rock On Src layer again, rename to Rock on emboss. Install Fill (Fill) at 0% and Opacity (Opacity) by 90%. Choose a tool Move Tool (V) (Move) and slide the layer 10x up and 20x to the left.
Add a layer style Bevel and Emboss (Embossed).
Let’s add some more details and highlights to the text. Duplicate the Rock On Src layer again and rename Rock On Stroke. Choose a tool Move Tool (V) (Move) and slide the layer 10x up and 10x to the left. Install Fill (Fill) layer to 0%.
Place this layer between the Rock On Emboss and Rock On Gradient layers. Apply layer style Outer glow (External glow) with purple color and with the parameters shown below.
Put this layer in a group (Ctrl + G) and change the group’s blending mode to Color dodge (Lightening the basics).
The final result.
Our 3D halftone text effect is complete. You can use this effect to create any kind of 3D illustrations.
