Create a bright text in neon color in Photoshop

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a bright neon text effect using layer styles.

Before you start, download the archive, install the font. Of course, you can use any other.

1. Create a pattern

Step 1

Open Photoshop (I use Photoshop CS6), go File – New (File – New) and create a new document of 6 x 6 pixels (Background Content (Background content) set to Transparent (Transparent)).

Step 2

Take Pencil Tool (B) (Pencil), set the diameter to 1 pixel and draw three diagonal lines.

Step 3

Press Ctrl + A to select the entire document, and go Edit – Define Pattern (Editing – Define a pattern). In the field with the name enter “Diagonal Pattern” and click OK.

Once created, the pattern is automatically added to the shared library. We will use it in the next section.

2. Create a background

Step 1

Create a new 4000 x 1420 pixel document with a resolution of 300 dpi. Background Content (Background content) set to Transparent (Transparent).

Step 2

Move on Layer – New Fill Layer – Gradient (Layer – New fill-layer – Gradient) and in the field with the name we write “Background”.

Step 3

As a result, the program will open a dialog box. Click on the gradient bar to create a new gradient using colors # 535353 (left) and # 373737 (right). When finished, click OK.

Step 4

Select a layer Background (Background) and turn Layer – Group Layers (Layer – Group the layers) (or press the key combination Ctrl + G). We call the group “Background”.

3. Create a text smart object

Thanks to the smart object, you can quickly and easily customize the text.

Step 1

Take Type Tool (T) (Text) and select the font Intro. The size is set to 230 pt, then in capital letters we write the word ACID. Text color is not important.

Step 2

Select the text layer and press the key combination Ctrl + A. Then take Move Tool (V) (Move) and on the top panel click on the buttons Align vertical center (Alignment centers vertically) and Align horizontal center (Align the centers horizontally). Due to this, we align the text in the center of the document.

Step 3

Check that the text layer is selected. Double-click the left mouse button on its name and write “Text Layer”. When finished, press Enter.

Step 4

Move on Layer – Smart Object – Convert to Smart Object (Layer – Smart Object – Convert to Smart Object) (or right-click on the layer and select Convert to Smart Object (Convert to smart object)).

Step 5

Select a smart object and duplicate it (Ctrl + J) several times. As a result, we get five copies of the ACID text. Rename each layer from top to bottom using the “Text_ [number]” template. Hold down the Ctrl key, select all the smart objects and group them (Ctrl + G). We call the group “Text”.

4. Styling the “Text_1” layer

Let’s start with the topmost layer.

Step 1

To start, reduce Fill Opacity (Opacity fill) up to 0%.
