Create a bright text in the style of Ombre in Photoshop

Hombre (Ombre) is a French word meaning a smooth transition of color from one shade to another. To create this effect, commonly used gradient fill (gradient fill) or gradient overlay (gradient overlay). However, in this tutorial, you will learn how to create the same Ombre effect in the simplest way, but only using two layers with Embossed (Bevel and Emboss).

OK. Let’s get started!

1. Create a background

Step 1

Create a new document with the following dimensions 1100 x 700 px. Set the foreground color to # 760928 and the background color to # 3d1722, select the tool Gradient (Gradient Tool), in the settings set Radial gradient (Radial Gradient). Click in the center, and then drag the gradient from the center to one of the corners of our working paper.

Step 2

Open the original image ‘Texture 358’. Move this texture to our working paper, placing it on top of the layer with the background. Name this texture layer ‘Texture’. Next, go Editing – Transformation – Rotate 90° clockwise (Edit> Transform> Rotate 90 ° Clockwise). Change the blending mode for this texture layer to Difference (Difference), and also reduce opacity (Opacity) layer up to 30%. Apply scaling as needed.

2. Create text

Step 1

Create text using the Sail Regular font, font size 300 pt, font color # d70f35. Next, ask kerning between two characters (Kerning) Optic (Optical) as well as install tracking for selected characters (Tracking) -10.

Step 2

Duplicate the text layer. Reduce value Fillings (Fill) to 0 for duplicate layer.

3. Styling the first text layer.

Double click on the original text layer to apply the following layer styles:

Step 1

Layer style Stamping (Bevel and Emboss) with the following settings:

  • Method (Technique): Tough faceting (Chisel Hard)
  • The size (Size): 16
  • Contour of glossy (Gloss Contour): Cone-Asymmetrical
  • Tick in the box Smoothing (Anti-aliased)
  • Mode backlight (Highlight Mode): Linear shine (Linear Light)
  • Mode the shadows (Shadow Mode) – Color: # 462020

Step 2

Select Embossing style option Circuit (Contour). Set the following settings for this layer style:

  • Circuit (Contour): Gaussian — Inverse
  • Tick in the box Smoothing (Anti-aliased)

Step 3

Next, select another Emboss style option. Texture (Texture). Set the following settings for this layer style:

  • Pattern (Pattern): Scattered noise (Broken noise)
  • Depth (Depth): 50%

Step 4

Add a layer style Stroke (Stroke) with the following settings:

  • The size (Size): 1
  • Stroke Type (Fill Type): Gradient (Gradient)
  • Style (Style): Mirror (Reflected)
  • Angle (Angle): 90
  • Click on the gradient window to set the gradient colors.

Step 5

To create a gradient, you need to click on the gradient scale to edit color control points. When the window appears Gradient editor (Gradient editor), you can edit control points of color, changing their color and location. In the screenshot below you can see the location of the control points from left to right:

The location of the color control points:

  • # 7b094e – 0%
  • # 95266b – 16%
  • # a52e82 – 32%
  • # e1c2d1 – 50%
  • # a52e82 – 64%
  • # 95266b – 84%
  • # 7b094e – 100%

Step 6

Add a layer style Inner shadow (Inner Shadow) with the following settings:

  • Colour: # c47b8e
  • Bias (Distance): 0
  • The size (Size): 7

Step 7

Add a layer style Internal glow (Inner Glow) with the following settings:

  • Blend mode (Blend Mode): Bright light (Vivid Light)
  • Opacity (Opacity): 40%
  • Noise (Noise): 100%
  • Color classification: # c3858c
  • The size (Size): 10

Step 8

Add a layer style Shadow (Drop Shadow) with the following settings:

  • Bias (Distance): 9
  • Swipe (Spread): 9
  • The size (Size): 8

Step 9

So, we created styling for the main text layer.

4. Stylize the duplicate text layer to create the Ombre effect.

Double click on the first duplicate of the text layer to apply the following layer styles:

Step 1

Layer style Stamping (Bevel and Emboss) with the following settings:

  • The size (Size): 30
  • Uncheck the box Global coverage (Use Global Light)
  • Angle (Angle): 95
  • Height (Altitude): 50
  • Gloss contour (Gloss Contour): Half Round
  • Tick in the box Smoothing (Anti-aliased)
  • Backlight mode (Highlight Mode): Linear light (Linear Light)
  • Color classification: # e8db87
  • Shadow mode (Shadow Mode):
  • Color classification: # 721a31
  • Opacity (Opacity): 30%

Color in Backlight mode (Highlight Mode) is the color that is added to create a gradient, so you can experiment with different color tones if you want.

Step 2

Select Embossing style option Circuit (Contour). Set the following settings for this layer style:

  • Circuit (Contour): Half Round
  • Tick in the box Smoothing (Anti-aliased)

Step 3

Next, select another Emboss style option. Texture (Texture). Set the following settings for this layer style:

  • Pattern (Pattern): Green Fibers

Step 4

Add a layer style Inner Shadow (Inner Shadow) with the following settings:

  • Color classification: # 505b5b
  • Bias (Distance): 21
  • The size (Size): 21

Step 5

Voila! Stylized duplicate text layer added extra color, creating a beautiful gradient.

5. Add a delicate vignette effect.

Step 1

Press the button Create a new adjustment or fill layer (Create new fill or adjustment layer) at the bottom of the layers panel and in the appeared window select the option Gradient (Gradient).

Step 2

In the gradient settings, set Style (Style) Radial (Radial) Scale (Scale) 550, then click on the gradient window to set the gradient colors.

Step 3

Use the gradient type from Transparent to Fill Color, set the color to # 432d23 for the left color fix point and # 6e625c for the right color fix point. You can click a little above the gradient scale to add an Opacity control point, and then you can edit the created control point in the same way as you did before when editing color control points.

Step 4

Change the blending mode for the gradient adjustment layer to Multiplication (Multiply). Thus, we will add a gentle vignette effect to our final result.

Congratulations! We have completed the lesson!

In this tutorial, we used a layer with Gradient fill (gradient fill) including texture to create a simple background. Next, we created two layers with text, applying layer styles to them.

We applied layer styles to each text layer using different settings and creating different effects using different color shades. We applied the layer style twice. Stamping (Bevel and Emboss) to layers with text to create a gradient and get a beautiful Ombre effect.

Finally, we added a gentle vignette effect using an adjustment layer. Gradient (Gradient).

Hope you enjoyed this tutorial!
