Create a bulk metal text in Photoshop

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create bronze text using layer styles in Photoshop. So let’s get started!

Final result

1. Create a background

Step 1

Download the black_background.pat texture by double-clicking on the source file.

Step 2

Create a new document, go File – New (File> New). Set the value Widths (Width) by 600 px, and the value Heights (Height) by 500 px. Resolution (Resolution) should be 72 dots per inch (ppi).

Step 3

Being on the layer with the background, duplicate it, for this we go Layer – create duplicate layer (Layer> Duplicate Layer) and click OK. Name the duplicate layer Background Pattern (Background Pattern).

Step 4

Next, we will add a texture to the duplicate layer using layer styles. Since we will often apply layer styles, then try to memorize the action, how to activate layer styles.

Navigate Layer – Layer Style – Pattern Overlap (Layer> Layer Style> Pattern Overlay), select the texture ‘black_background.pat’ from the drop down menu, set Scale (Scale) 50%, and click OK.

Step 5

To add lighting effects on top, select a layer style. Stamping (Bevel Emboss). Apply the settings for this layer style, which are shown in the screenshot below:

2. Create text

Step 1

Write the word ‘Round’ or any word of your choice using the font ‘Stonecross’. Install Font size (Font Size) 132 pt, and also set Tracking (Tracking) 20 pt. To improve the quality, change the method Smoothing (anti-aliasing) on Sharp (Sharp). Name this text layer ‘A01’.

Step 2

Next, select the tool Move (Move Tool), select the text layer and the layer with the background, and then in the settings of this tool, select the following options: Horizontal alignment (Align Horizontal Center) and Alignment centers vertically (Align Vertical Center) to align text.

Step 3

Duplicate the text layer, name the duplicate layer ‘A02’. Arrange the layers as shown in the screenshot below. Temporarily hide the ‘A02’ layer to make it convenient for you to work, since we will not use this layer until part 4 of this tutorial.

3. Apply styling to the base layer.

Step 1

Download texture ‘scratched_metal.pat’.

Step 2

We will work with the ‘A01’ layer. Navigate Layer – Layer Style – Pattern Overlap (Layer> Layer Style> Pattern Overlay), click on the window Pattern (Pattern) to select the ‘scratched_metal.pat’ texture from the drop-down menu. We use this texture as the basis for creating a metallic effect.

Step 3

To get a realistic bronze color, go Layer – Layer Style – Color Overlay (Layer> Layer Style> Color Overlay). Change the blending mode to Multiplication (Multiply), and also set the following values:

Next, add a layer style to the text layer. Stamping (Bevel Emboss) and Circuit (Contour), as shown in the screenshot below.

You will need to create the contours of the curves yourself to get a volume effect. Carefully read the screenshot below, and also apply the values ​​that are listed in the right column..

Step 5

Next, go Layer – Style layer – Gloss(Layer> Layer Style> Satin). Apply the following values ​​to lighten the text.

Select the ‘Cove – Deep’ contour from the set of contours.

Step 6

Now we will improve the shine effect of the metal by adding glow. Let’s go Layer – Layer Style – Inner Glow (Layer> Layer Style> Inner Glow). Set the values ​​that are shown in the screenshot below.

Step 7

Next, we need to add shadows to separate the text from the background. Let’s go Layer – Layer Style – Outer Glow (Layer> Layer Style> Outer Glow). Set the values ​​that are shown in the screenshot below.

4. Apply styling to the second layer.

Step 1

Now we will work with the ‘A02’ layer, do not forget to turn on the visibility of this layer! Next, go Layer – Layer Style – Outer Glow (Layer> Layer Style> Outer Glow). Set the values ​​that are shown in the screenshot below.

Step 2

To improve the 3D view, we emphasize light and shade on the edges. Let’s go Layer – Style layer – Stamping(Layer> Layer Style> Bevel Emboss). Set the values ​​that are shown in the screenshot below. Create your outline using the values ​​that are listed in the right column.

Step 3

This is a very important step. We will create a perspective with a central vanishing point in perspective.

Go to the bookmark Symbol (Character) and change Horizontal scale (Horizontally Scale) by 98%, as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 4

So that the colors of both layers with the text match each other, let’s go Layer – Layer Style – Color Overlay (Layer> Layer Style> Color Overlay). Set the values ​​that are shown in the screenshot below.

Step 5

Next, select a layer style. Stroke (Stroke). Install Stroke Type (Fill Type) Gradient (Gradient). Set the values ​​shown in the screenshot below to lighten the edges.

Hint: to add a gradient control point, you need to click below the gradient scale. Clicking on the gradient control point, you can edit Positions (Location) and Colors (Color) control point.

Step 6

In this final step we will add some depth to make the text more expressive. Apply layer style Shadow (Drop Shadow) using the following settings.
