Create a festive text from confetti

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create wedding confetti text using multiple textures, brushes, and layer styles. Let’s start!

I was inspired to create this effect by the numerous layer styles available on GraphicRiver.

Note: The author used paid materials. In the archive you will find an alternative font for the lesson.

1. Create a background and text

Step 1

Create a new document with a size of 950 x 800 pixels and above the layer Background (Background) paste the wall texture.

If necessary, adjust the size of the texture and call the layer “Background Texture”.

Step 2

At the bottom of the layers panel, press the button Create new fill or adjustment layer (Create a new fill or adjustment layer) and select Levels (Levels).

Step 3

Select a layer Levels (Levels) and transform it into a clipping mask (Ctrl + Alt + G) for the Background Texture layer. Then set the central gray slider to 1.95.

Step 4

Write the text in large letters using the InterFace Regular font.

Set the size to 250 pt, Tracking (Tracking) – by 100 and, if you have several lines of text, then we change Leading (Interlaying) at 250.

2. Add textures and masks

Step 1

Above the previous layers, we insert a pink paper texture, if necessary, adjust its size and call the layer “Pink”.

Step 2

Hold the Alt key and at the bottom of the layers panel, press the button Add layer mask (Add layer mask) to completely hide the texture.

Step 3

Duplicate (Ctrl + J) the “Pink” layer.

Step 4

Repeat the action and add a second texture – wrapping paper. Rename the texture layer to Golden and duplicate it (Ctrl + J).

3. Create a brush “Confetti”

Step 1

Activate the tool Brush Tool (B) (Brush) and open the panel Window – Brush (Window – Brush). Choose a round hard brush and set it up:

Brush Tip Shape (Brush print form)

Shape Dynamics (Dynamics of the form)

Step 2

In the lower right corner of the brushes panel click on the button Create new brush (Create a new brush), in the appeared window in the field with the name enter “Round confetti” and click OK.

Step 3

Set the “Heart” brush set, select the s24 brush and set it up:

Brush Tip Shape (Brush print form)

Shape Dynamics (Dynamics of the form)

Scattering (Scattering)

Save the brush and call it “Heart shaped confetti.”

Step 4

Select the square brush Hard Square 24 and set it up:

Brush Tip Shape (Brush print form)

Shape Dynamics (Dynamics of the form)

Scattering (Scattering)

Save the brush and call it “Top confetti.”

4. We perform a text stroke.

Step 1

Right click on the text and select Create Work Path (Create a work path). Then hide the text layer by clicking on the eye icon opposite the layer name.

Step 2

Take Brush Tool (B) (Brush), select the “Confetti in the shape of a heart” tassel and set the foreground color to white.

Select the “Golden” layer mask and press the Enter key once to stroke the working contour with a brush.

Step 3

Select the copy mask of the “Golden” layer and press the Enter key once to stroke the working contour with a brush.

Step 4

Hide both copies of the “Golden” layer.

5. Create a work path using the Pen.

Step 1

Now we need to create another work loop inside the previous one. For this we will use the tool Pen Tool (P) (Pen). On the top panel, set the drawing mode to Path (Circuit).

To create a perfectly straight line, click at the start point, then hold Shift, click again to add the next anchor point.

Step 2

Press the Esc key (or hold down the Ctrl key and click anywhere in the document) to complete the creation of the current path and proceed to the new one.

Step 3

To create a curved line, you must, at the time of adding a new anchor point, without releasing the left mouse button, pull to make the antennae appear.

Step 4

Using tool Direct Selection Tool (A) (Partial selection) at any time you can correct the reference points and the direction of the antennae, thereby changing the shape of the working contour.

Step 5

Having completed the creation of an additional working circuit, we take Brush Tool (B) (Brush), select the Round Confetti brush and stroke the outline on the copies of the Pink layer.

After that, press the A key, then Enter to delete the work path.

6. We style round confetti.

Double click on the “Pink” layer to open the window Layer Style (Layer style), and apply the following layer styles:

Step 1

Add a layer style Color Overlay (Color overlay) with the following parameters:

  • Color: #edcdd2

If you wish, you can experiment with other colors and blending modes.

Step 2

Add a layer style Drop Shadow (Shadow) with the following parameters:

  • Opacity (Opacity): 10%
  • Distance (Offset): 7
  • Size (Size): 3

Step 3

Right click on the “Pink” layer and select Copy Layer Style (Copy layer style). Then right-click on the copy of the “Pink” layer and select Paste Layer Style (Paste layer style).

7. Stylize confetti in the shape of a heart.

Step 1

Restore the visibility of copies of the “Golden” layer.

Step 2

Double click on the original “Golden” layer and apply the layer style. Drop Shadow (Shadow) with the following settings:

  • Opacity (Opacity): 20%
  • Distance (Offset): 7
  • Size (Size): 3

Step 3

Copy and paste the styles on the duplicate layer “Golden”.

8. Move the texture inside the mask.

Step 1

Move the “Golden” layer under the copy of the “Pink” layer to make the effect look more dynamic. Then click on the chain icon between the layer and the mask to disconnect them. We do this for all four layers.

Step 2

Click on the layer thumbnail and press Ctrl + T to activate the free transformation mode. Adjust the position and size of the texture until we get the desired result.

Step 3

When finished, press Enter to accept the changes.

9. Add blurry confetti

Step 1

Above all previous layers, we add the texture of the wrapping paper again and call it “Top confetti”. This confetti is closer to the viewer and should be larger than what is on the letters, so do not significantly reduce the texture scale.

Hold the Alt key and add a black mask on the “Top Confetti” layer. Then we take a brush “Top confetti” and manually draw confetti around the text.

Step 2

Right-click on the “Top Confetti” layer and select Convert to Smart Object (Convert to smart object).

Step 3

Next, go Filter – Blur Gallery – Path Blur (Filter – Gallery blur – Blur contour). Put the pivot points and create an arcuate line. Settings use either like me or at your discretion.

Step 4

Move on Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur) and set Radius (Radius) by 3.

Step 5

Double-click on the “Top Confetti” layer and apply the layer style Drop Shadow (Shadow) with the following settings:

  • Opacity (Opacity): 5%
  • Distance (Offset): 70
  • Size (Size): 5

This is where we finish creating the text effect.

Congratulations, we are done!

At the beginning of the lesson, we created a simple background, text, and added some textures with masks.

Then set up and save a few brushes, created a work path and circled it with brushes. After that using Pen Tool (Pen) we added an additional work path, applied round confetti to it and styled it.

And at the end drew a blurred confetti around the text.
