Create a glowing text in Photoshop

In this very short tutorial, I will show you a simple way to create text, inspired by the TV series “Very Strange Affairs”, using only layer styles, including a simple correction.

This text effect was inspired by other text effects that are available on the Envato Market site.

1. Create a background and text.

Step 1

Create a new document with the following dimensions 1280 x 720 px. Fill the background with the color shade # 0c0101.

Step 2

Add text, font color is white, font is Indira K.

The original font used in the series is Benguiat (https://www.myfonts.com/fonts/itc/benguiat/). This is an alternative that you can use as well.

Install the size The size of the font is approximately 141 pt, and also select the font style. Pseudo-fat (Faux bold) and All caps (All Capsicons) in the settings panel Symbol (Character). To get to the settings panel, go Window – Symbol (Window> Character).

Step 3

Set the value Tracking (Tracking) at -100.

Step 4

Change Vertical Scale (Vertical Scale) at 115. This will help stretch the text vertically.

2. Change the design of letters

Step 1

Highlight the first letter in the text, and then change its size to about 212 pt.

Step 2

Next, we need to change the value Baseline Offset (Baseline Shift) to shift the big letter down, while the top level of the whole text should remain at the same level.

To shift the baseline, you can either enter a numeric value, or by holding the icon with the left mouse button Baseline Offset (Baseline Shift), pull left.

Step 3

Do the same with the last letter in the first line of the text or any other letter you like.

3. Correct Kerning

Step 1

Position the cursor between the first two letters, and then change the value Kerning (Kerning) on ​​the value at which, in your opinion, the effect will look better.

Step 2

Depending on your text, as well as on the result you want to get, correct Kerning (Kerning) for the remaining letters of your text. It is not necessary to correct all the letters, correct those letters for which you think you need to do this.

Step 3

Now reduce the value Fillings (Fill) for a layer with text up to 0.

4. Apply styling to the text layer.

Double click on the text layer to apply the following layer styles:

Step 1

Choose a layer style Stamping (Bevel and Emboss). Set the following settings for this layer style:

  • Style (Style): Embossing (Stroke Emboss)
  • Depth (Depth): 220
  • The size (Size): 3
  • Uncheck the box Global coverage (Global Light)
  • Angle (Angle): 156
  • Height (Altitude): 37
  • Gloss contour (Gloss Contour): Inverted cone (Cone – Inverted)
  • Tick ​​in the box Smoothing (Anti-aliased)
  • Backlight mode (Highlight Mode) – Opacity (Opacity): 35%
  • Shadow mode (Shadow Mode) – Opacity (Opacity): 50%

Step 2

Choose next layer style Circuit (Contour). Set the following settings for this layer style:

  • Circuit (Contour): Deep groove (Cove – Deep)
  • Tick ​​in the box Smoothing (Anti-aliased)

Step 3

Choose next layer style Stroke (Stroke). Set the following settings for this layer style:

  • The size (Size): 3
  • Position (Position): Inside (Inside)
  • Colour: # ce1725

Step 4

Choose next layer style Internal glow (Inner Glow). Set the following settings for this layer style:

  • Opacity (Opacity): 50%
  • Noise (Noise): 5%
  • Colour: # ea0f0f
  • The size (Size): 17

Step 5

Choose next layer style External glow (Outer Glow). Set the following settings for this layer style:

  • Opacity (Opacity): 50%
  • Noise (Noise): 5%
  • Colour: # ea2314
  • The size (Size): 12
  • Range (Range): 60%

Step 6

So, we applied styling to the text. Now right-click on the text layer styles and select the option in the menu that appears. Copy layer style (Copy Layer Style).

5. Create rectangular shapes.

Step 1

Choose a tool Rounded Rectangle (Rounded Rectangle Tool) in the control panel of this tool, set Radius (Radius) by 2. Click / hold the mouse button and then drag to create a rectangle above the text, the distance between the text and the rectangular line should be approximately 7 px.

Next, click / hold the mouse button and then drag to create rectangles at the beginning and end of the second line of text, or in any other place where you want to add them. Try to keep the distance between any rectangular line and the text so that they are equally removed from the text.

Step 2

Now reduce the value Fillings (Fill) for a layer with rectangles up to 0.

6. Apply styling to rectangular shapes.

Right-click on any layer with a rectangle and in the appeared window select the option Paste style layer (Paste Layer Style). So we apply the same layer style that we copied from the text layer.

After that, double-click on the stylized rectangle layer to change some settings:

Step 1

Choose a layer style Stamping (Bevel and Emboss). Set the following settings for this layer style:

  • The size (Size): 2

Step 2

Choose next layer style Stroke (Stroke). Set the following settings for this layer style:

  • The size (Size): 2
  • Position (Position): Outside (Outside)

Step 3

Choose next layer style Internal glow (Inner Glow). Set the following settings for this layer style:

  • The size (Size): 5

Step 4

Choose next layer style External glow (Outer Glow). Set the following settings for this layer style:

  • The size (Size): 17

Step 5

Now right-click on the stylized rectangle layer and select the option in the menu that appears. Copy layer style (Copy Layer Style).

Step 6

Select the remaining layers with the rectangles that you have, right-click on the selected layers and in the appeared menu select the option To paste style layer (Paste Layer Style).

Step 7

Group the text layer, including the rectangle layers into one group. Name this group Text effect (Text Effect).

7. Apply styling to the group.

Double click on the group layer to apply the following layer styles:

Step 1

Choose a layer style Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay). Set the following settings for this layer style:

  • Tick ​​in the box Dithering (Dither)
  • Blend mode (Blend Mode): Soft light (Soft Light)
  • Style (Style): Mirror (Reflected)
  • Angle (Angle): 135
  • Set the gradient colors #fbe7c2 on the left and # e69f99 on the right

Step 2

Add another layer style Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay). Set the following settings for this layer style:

  • Tick ​​in the box Dithering (Dither)
  • Blend mode (Blend Mode): Overlap (Overlay)
  • Style (Style): Mirror (Reflected)
  • Angle (Angle): 135
  • Use gradient faucet 10

Step 3

Choose next layer style External glow (Outer Glow). Set the following settings for this layer style:

  • Opacity (Opacity): 20%
  • Colour: # de1b22
  • The size (Size): 34
  • Range (Range): 60%

Thus, we have enhanced the effect.

8. Add light highlights

Step 1

Set the foreground color to # 451d08, and then create a new layer on top of all other layers, name this layer Shine (Light), and also change the blending mode to Lightening basics (Color Dodge).

Step 2

Choose a tool Brush (Brush Tool), install a large soft round brush. Next, click on different letters several times to add light highlights.

You can change the brush size and play with the brush opacity value to vary the intensity of the light highlights you add.

Step 3

Click icon Create a new adjustment or fill layer (Create new fill or adjustment layer) at the bottom of the layers panel and in the appeared menu select the option Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation).

Step 4

Set the value Saturation (Saturation) at 35, and the value Brightness (Lightness) to 15, or set other settings that you like.

9. Perform color correction.

Step 1

Add adjustment layer Gradient (Gradient) on top of the group layer Text effect (Text Effect).

Set the gradient colors to # 5c456e on the right, # b26b73 in the center, and # fda982 on the left. Change Style (Style) on Mirror (Reflected), Angle (Angle) at 155, and Scale (Scale) by 55%.

Step 2

Change the blending mode for the adjustment layer. Gradient (Gradient) on Chromaticity (Color), and also reduce the value Opacity (Opacity) layer up to 35%.

In this tutorial, we created the text, and then changed the text settings in the settings panel Symbol (Character). Next, we stylized the text, created rectangles, and also stylized them.

After that, we grouped all the layers and added another layer style. In conclusion, we added light highlights as well as an adjustment layer. Gradient (gradient) to correct the color of the final result.
