Create a grunge text effect in Photoshop

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a grunge text effect in the form of a rift. I will show you some interesting methods for applying a layer mask and filter. Liquify (Plastic). We will also use grunge brushes to add texture and dirt around the text.

Below you can see the final result of the lesson:

Materials for the lesson:

Step 1

Create a new document with the size of 1200 x 670 pixels, fill the background layer with a gradient of light yellow color using the tool Gradient tool (Gradient) (G):

Writing a letter – I used the font Felix titling, which is in the standard set of Windows’a. If you have an Apple Mac, then choose a different font:

Create a new layer right below the text layer; use soft white. brush (B) to draw a spot in the center to create a background light source:

Step 2

Load grunge brushes in Photoshop, select any and draw something on the canvas, then use the filter Liquify (Plastic) to deform the painted blot:

Repeat the process by adding more textures around the letter:

Tip: When you apply a filter Liquify (Plastic) in the middle of the letter, try to give textures a shape similar to cracks emanating from the letter.

Step 3

Now add a layer mask on the text layer and erase some parts of the letter with a very small grunge brush:

And we get this effect:

Step 4

Now we will add abstract lines in the upper right part of the letter. Take Pen tool(Pen) (P) and create a contour, as shown below, then take a soft round brush with a size of 30 pixels and stroke the contour by clicking on it with the right mouse button while the tool is active Pen tool (Feather) (P):

Duplicate this line twice and rotate each copy a little, then merge all three layers together Ctrl + E:

You can also use soft eraser (E) to slightly erase the lines at the base to give depth to the image:

Step 5

We are almost done :) As a final touch, add a grunge texture around the text, as shown below:

You can also add highlights in the upper right and lower left corners of the letter using soft white brushes (AT):

I also added a few feathers:

And we get this final result:

It’s all! I hope you enjoyed the lesson and it was useful for you.
