Create a New Year text with candy in Photoshop

?The winter is on the threshold, and in just a few days the New Year holidays will come. So today we will create a glass text effect with candies, which is ideal for creating Christmas and New Year typography. You can create and fill glass letters with other sweets, such as chocolates.

Download the archive with materials for the lesson

Step 1

To get started, download the archive with materials containing the textures and styles used in this lesson. Load the ASL and PAT files into Photoshop.

Step 2

Create a new PSD file and apply the wooden texture as a background by downloading it from the link at the beginning of the lesson.

Step 3

Now you can add your text. Use the Intro font. Name this layer Text.

Step 4

Now I want to change the font type a bit, create rounded corners. Of course, you can initially select the type of font with rounded corners. So, first right-click on the text layer and select Rasterize type (Rasterize the text).

Hold down the Ctrl key and click on the text layer icon to create a selection.

Go to menu Select > Refine Edge (Select> Refine Edge) and specify the following settings.

Step 5

Press Shift + F5 to fill the selection with any color. Press Ctrl + I to invert the selection and then press the Delete key. Finally, press Ctrl + D to deselect.

Step 6

Right-click on the text layer and select Convert to smart object (Convert to smart object). Name this layer Glass text with candy 1. Make three more copies: Glass text with candy 2, Glass text with candy 3, Glass text with candy 4.

Step 7

Now add layer styles for all four layers to create a glass text effect. Let’s start with the layer Glass text with candy 1; Double click on the layer to open the window Layer style (Layer style).

Blending options (Overlay options)

Drop shadow (Shadow)

Color overlay (Overlay color)

Step 8

Now go to the next layer. Glass text with candy 2, add layer styles shown below.

Blending options (Overlay options)

Drop shadow (Shadow)

Inner shadow (Inner shadow)

Inner glow (Internal glow)

Bevel and Emboss (Embossed)

Kontour (Circuit)

Step 9

Next layer Glass text with candy 3:

Blending options (Overlay options)

Inner shadow (Inner shadow)

Bevel and Emboss (Embossed)

Kontour (Circuit)

Step 10

Now go to the last layer Glass text with candy 4, Add the following layer styles to it:

Blending options (Overlay options)

Inner shadow (Inner shadow)

Your transparent glass text effect should look like this:

Step 11

Go to layer Glass text with candy 1, and press Shift + Ctrl + N to create a new layer. Call it Candy texture. Fill this layer with any color and add a layer style. Pattern overlay (Pattern overlay) using candy seamless texture.

Step 12

Go to layer Glass text with candy 1, hold down the Ctrl key and click on the layer thumbnail to make a selection. Go back to the layer Candy texture and click on the icon Add layer mask (Add layer mask).

Step 13

Click on the layer mask Candy texture. Take a tough round Brush Tool (Brush) black and hide part of the candy texture, as shown in the figure below. Make sure that the top edge consists of round, uncircumcised sweets.

Step 14

Add a layer style Inner shadow (Inner shadow) to layer Candy texture.

Step 15

In order to make the image more festive, I added the Fir branch (note: The branch can be downloaded from the link at the beginning of the lesson.). To use it, remove the background. Below is a video tutorial on how you can remove a background in Photoshop using alpha channels and layer masks.

Step 16

Add adjustment layer Color Balance (Color balance) as a clipping mask for this layer.

Step 17

Add adjustment layer Brightness / Contrast (Brightness / Contrast) as a clipping mask for layer only Branch spruce.

Step 18

Now you can rasterize the layer Branch spruce and two adjustment layers (select 3 layers and press Ctrl + E to merge the layers). Duplicate the resulting layer several times, rotate, resize and move the layers so as to create a spruce edging.

Step 19

If you want, you can turn these glass letters with candies into Christmas-tree decorations. Use Pen Tool (Feather) to create round shapes. Add layer styles to create a silver glossy effect. You can find the layer style under the name “Silver Style” in the ASL file that you downloaded at the beginning of this tutorial.

Step 20

Use round Brush Tool (Brush) to draw some lines. Add layer styles to create a silver thread effect. You can find the layer style called “Silver Thread Style” in the ASL file that you downloaded at the beginning of this tutorial.

Step 21

In order to make the Christmas balls look even more festive, you can add a bow to the fir branches by jumping on the link at the beginning of the lesson. As you probably noticed, the original bow is gold, and we want a silver bow to match other colors. So add adjustment layers Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation) and Curves (Curves) for layer only Bow.

Step 22

As a finishing touch you can add a little snowflakes. You can use one of the falling snow textures; just add texture on the new layer and set the blending mode Lighten (Replacing light) or Screen (Screen).

And here is the final result: A Christmas text effect in the form of glass balls filled with colorful candies. For the background, I used the texture of old boards and framing of fir branches. Hope you tried the lesson!
