Today I will show you how to create metallic text using layer styles in Photoshop. So let’s get started!
Final result
1. Create a Background
Step 1
First you need to set the metal pattern, the file name is ‘green_metal_pattern’. To install, simply double click on the icon of the specified file.
Step 2
Create a new document in the program Adobe Photoshop, go File – New (File> New). Set the following settings: 600 px across the width (Width) and 500 px. by height (Height). Resolution (Resolution) should be 72 ppi.
Step 3
On the layer with the background, duplicate it, go Layer- Duplicate Layer (Layer> Duplicate Layer). Click OK. Rename the duplicate layer to name it, Texture Background (Background Pattern).
Step 4
To add texture to the background, we use layer styles.
So let’s go Layer – Layer Style – Pattern Overlap (Layer> Layer Style> Pattern Overlay), in the pattern menu, select a green metal texture (green_metal_pattern). Install Scale(Scale) 50%. Click the button Snap to the origin (Snap to Origin). Press this button each time you apply this texture.
Step 5
Next, we will add a light effect to the center of the image, let’s go Layer – Layer Styles – Inner Shadow (Layer> Layer Style> Inner Shadow). For this layer style, make the following settings.
Step 6
Next, we will add a reflection. Let’s go Layer – Layer Styles – Emboss (Layer Style> Bevel Emboss). Set the settings for this layer style, which are shown in the screenshot below.
We need to create our own contour, for this, click on the window Gloss contour (Gloss Contour) to set the contour. Check out the screenshots below to apply the appropriate values.
2. Create Text
Step 1
Type the word ‘Shine’ or any other word at your discretion using the ‘Amaz Obitaem Ostrov Italic’ font. Set the font size to 180 pt. For better quality, set the method Smoothing (anti-aliasing) on Sharp (Sharp). Name this layer with the text ‘Shine Top’.
Step 2
Double-duplicate the text layer, name the duplicate layers ‘Shine Mid’ and ‘Shine Bot’, as shown in the screenshot below. Turn off the visibility of duplicate layers to make it easier for you to work, because, we will not use these layers yet.
3. Apply Styling to the Top Layer.
Step 1
Being on the topmost layer ine Shine Top ’, let’s go Layer – Style layer – overlap pattern (Layer> Layer Style> Pattern Overlay). Click on the patterns menu to select a green metal texture (we use the same texture we used to create the background), and also set Scale (Scale) 50%. Do not forget to click on the button. Snap to the origin (Snap to Origin).
Step 2
Next, we will add a layer style. Shadow (Drop Shadow) to separate the text from the background. Let’s go Layer – Layer Style – Shadow (Layer Style> Drop Shadow). Apply the settings shown in the screenshot below.
Step 3
Next, we will add a layer style. Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay). Let’s go Layer – Layer Style – Gradient Overlay (Layer Style> Gradient Overlay). Apply the settings shown in the screenshot below.
Step 4
To add a glossy look, open the window Layer styles (Layer Style) and apply a layer style. Stamping (Bevel Emboss). Apply the settings shown in the screenshot below.
We need to create the outline of the curve. Apply the values for the contour curve, which are shown in the screenshot below in the column to the right.
Step 5
Next, apply a layer style. Gloss (Satin). Let’s go Layer – Layer Style – Gloss (Layer Style> Satin). Apply the following settings, which are shown in the screenshot below, to make the text lighter.
Set the standard contour, the contour name ‘Cove – Deep’.
Step 6
Now we need to improve the effect of metallic luster, by adding glow. Let’s go Layer – Layer Style – Inner Glow (Layer Style> Inner Glow). Apply the following settings, which are shown in the screenshot below.
Set the standard contour, contour name ‘Cone’.
Step 7
Next, we will add a layer style. Stroke (Stroke) to brighten the upper edges of the text. Let’s go Layer – Layer Style – Stroke (Layer Style> Stroke). Apply the following settings, which are shown in the screenshot below.
Step 8
Next, we will add light to the background. Let’s go Layer – Layer Style – Outer Glow (Layer Style> Outer Glow). Apply the following settings, which are shown in the screenshot below.
Set the standard contour, contour name ‘Cone’.
4. Apply Styling to Middle Layer.
Step 1
Next, we will work with the second layer ‘Shine Mid’, so do not forget to turn on the visibility of this layer! We need to achieve perspective with a central vanishing point. Go to the bookmark Symbol (Character) and change the value Tracking (Tracking) at -60, as shown in the screenshot below.
Step 2
To match the color of both layers, go Layer – Layer Style – Gradient Overlay (Layer> Layer Style> Gradient Overlay). Apply the following settings, which are shown in the screenshot below.
Step 3
Next, apply a layer style. Inner shadow (Inner Shadow), let’s go Layer – Layer Styles – Inner Shadow (Layer> Layer Style> Inner Shadow). For this layer style, make the following settings.
Step 4
Next, we add shadows to separate the text from the background. Go to the menu Layer styles (Layer Style) and apply the following layer styles: Shadow (Drop Shadow) and External glow (Outer Glow). Apply the following settings, which are shown in the screenshot below.
5. Apply Styling to the bottom layer.
This is the final step that will give a special touch to the effect. Go to the bottom layer with the text ‘Shine Bot’ and then go to the bookmark Symbol (character). Install Vertical Scale (vertically scale) at 115%, and Baseline Offset (baseline shift) at -10 pt. Next, change the color as shown in the screenshot below.
