Create a simple two-tone text effect in Photoshop

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a simple and fast two-tone effect in Photoshop using adjustment layers and filters. Let’s start!

I was inspired to create this effect by the numerous layer styles available on GraphicRiver.

Note: The author used paid materials. In the archive you will find an alternative font for the lesson.

1. Create a background and text

Step 1

Create a new document with a size of 1000 x 650 pixels with a white background. Click on the button Create new fill or adjustment layer (Create a new fill or adjustment layer) at the bottom of the layers panel and select Gradient (Gradient).

Choose a gradient from color to transparency, set the colors to # a9a9a9 (left) and # 868686 (right).

Install Scale (Scale) at 150% and activate Dither (Dithering).

Step 2

In capital letters, using the font Sofia Pro Black, we write the text. Size (Size) set to 250 pt and, if you have more than one line of text, then set Leading (Interlaying) at 235.

2. Create a two-tone effect.

Step 1

Above the text layer, paste the texture and name the layer “Texture”. Click on it with the right mouse button and select Create Clipping Mask (Create clipping mask).

You can take any image as a texture, but to get an interesting two-tone effect, it should have enough details.

Step 2

At the bottom of the layers panel, click on the button. Create new fill or adjustment layer (Create a new fill or adjustment layer) and select Gradient Map (Gradient map).

Activate Dither (Dithering) and click on the gradient bar to adjust the colors. Set the color sliders to # 281960 (left) and # d52e51 (right).

How does the gradient map work? It matches shades of gray with an equivalent gradient color range. Thus, the left color of the gradient is responsible for the shadows in the image, and the right – the light areas.

You can experiment and try other colors.

3. Apply correction

Step 1

Click on the button Create new fill or adjustment layer (Create a new fill or adjustment layer) and add an adjustment layer Brightness/ Contrast (Brightness / Contrast). Set the parameter Contrast (Contrast) at 15 or any other value that suits your work.

Step 2

Add an adjustment layer Color Lookup (Color search) and install Abstract (Abstract) on Cobalt-Carmine.

Change the blend mode of the adjustment layer to Soft Light (Soft light) and install Opacity (Opacity) by 50%.

4. Create a halftone texture

Step 1

Above all previous layers add a new one and call it “Halftone texture”.

Step 2

Move on Edit – Fill (Edit – Fill) and install Contents (Content) on 50% Gray (50% gray).

Step 3

Right click on the “Halftone texture” layer and select Convert to Smart Object (Convert to smart object). Set the foreground and background colors to black and white, respectively.

Step 4

Move on Filter – Filter Gallery – Sketch – Halftone Pattern (Filter – Filter Gallery – Sketch – Halftone Pattern). Use the following settings for the filter:

  • Size (Size): 1
  • Contrast (Contrast): 5
  • Pattern Type (Pattern Type): Dot (Point)

Step 5

Change the mode of dismounting the “Halftone texture” layer to Soft Light (Soft light) and install Opacity (Opacity) by 20%.

Congratulations, we are done!

At the beginning of the lesson, we created a simple gradient background and added text.

Then they inserted a texture and transformed it into a clipping mask for the text, then using a gradient map, created a two-tone effect.

And at the end, we added several adjustment layers and a halftone texture to get the final result.
