Create a stone text in Photoshop

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a mysterious text “Energy Flows” using the texture of the stone in Photoshop. To create this effect, we use the texture of the stone, the Brush Cloud, and the texture of the water flows. The Stone texture will form the basis for the text, while the water texture will be used to create an “Energy Flow” around the text. Let’s try!

This lesson is of medium complexity, for which you will need a basic knowledge of Photoshop, including the basics of working with layer-masks.

Note: This lesson is done in Photoshop CS6 – so some screenshots may differ slightly from previous versions of the program. Some brushes are only available in this version of Photoshop CS6.

The final result:

Step 1

Create a new document with the following dimensions 1440 px * 720 px, background color is black. Using the brushes of the Clouds that you downloaded, draw the texture of the Clouds over the background. You can use any brush at your discretion. You can see my result of the drawn clouds in the screenshot below:

Load the Stone texture in Photoshop, select the top of the rock, as shown in the screenshot below:

Copy / paste (Copy / Paste) selected part of the stone texture on our working paper. Apply scaling by turning the selected part of the texture, as shown in the screenshot below. Place this part of the rock on the right side of our scene:

Next, using a soft eraser, process the edges of the Stone texture to combine this texture with the clouds in the background:

Repeat the previous process, add another part of the rock, only this time placing on the left side of our scene:

The result of the current lesson:

Step 2

In this step we will work on the text. Use any font at your discretion. Type the letter as shown in the screenshot below:

Select the top of the cliff again with the tool Fast selection (Quick Selection Tool):

Copy / paste (Copy / Paste) highlighted part of the rock on our working paper. Place a part of the rock on top of the letter, as shown in the screenshot below:

Using a brush a piece of chalk (chalk) as an eraser, delete parts of the stone texture as shown in the screenshot below:

Repeat the previous process, adding two more pieces of stone texture to the letter. Also, using a chalk brush, delete the texture areas:

The result of the current lesson:

Step 3

Group all the layers with the stone texture into one group. Next, add a new adjustment layer to the layer with this group:

Black-white (Black and white)

Levels (Levels)

Curves (Curves)

Layer order in the layers palette:

The result should be as in the screenshot below:

Step 4

In this step, we will create mysterious energy flows. Load the Water Streams texture in Photoshop. Highlight part of the image:

Copy / paste (Copy / Paste) selected part of the water texture on our working paper. Next, with the tool Free transformation (free transform tool), distort the selected part of the texture, as shown in the screenshot below:

To this layer with the texture of water, add the following adjustment layers:

Black-white (Black and White)

Levels (Levels)

Next, apply a filter 3 times. Contour sharpness (unsharp mask filter):

Next, add a correction layer to the water texture layer. Color Balance (color balance):

Next, change the blending mode for the water texture layer to Water clarification (Color Dodge):

We got the following effect – you can use the tool. Free transformation (free transform tool) for texture correction in its sole discretion:

Repeat the previous process, adding more energy flows throughout the scene:

In conclusion, we will make a color correction of our entire scene. To do this, add the following adjustment layers on top of all other layers:

Color Balance (Color Balance)

Selective color correction (Selective color)

Levels (Levels)

Curves (Curves)

Vibration (Vibrance)

So, we have completed the lesson! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. See you, have a nice day!
