Create a text with the effect of flowing paint in Photoshop

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create the effect of flowing paint in Photoshop using prefabricated vector shapes. If you prefer to work with a brush, you can easily turn the figures into a set of custom brushes and follow the lesson further.

To get the desired effect, we will use the layer styles.

  • Download the archive with materials for the lesson
  • Download PSD file

1. Create a paper background.

Step 1

Create a new document of 900 x 600 pixels. Add a seamless paper texture onto it and name the layer “Paper Background” with it.

Step 2

Add an adjustment layer Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Gradient Map (Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Gradient Map), use colors # 000000 (position 9%) and #ececec (position 90%).

2. Add a text layer

Step 1

Take the tool Type Tool (T) (Text) and write the text using any font you like. This lesson uses the font League Spartant. Under the link you can learn how to install the font in Photoshop.

Step 2

Go to the menu Window (Window) on the top panel and open Character (Symbol) and Paragraph (Paragraph). Install Tracking (Tracking) text on 100.

Right-click on the text layer and select Rasterize Type (Rasterize the text).

Hold down the Ctrl key and click on the layer thumbnail to create a selection.

Step 3

At the bottom of the layers panel, press the button Add layer mask (Add layer mask), while the text layer must be active.

Next, apply Select – Refine Mask (Allocation – Refine Edge). Pay attention so that the mask is active.

Step 4

Press the Ctrl key again and this time click on the mask thumbnail on the layers panel to create its selection.

Make the active layer (click on the thumbnail next to the mask on the layers panel) and go Edit – Fill (Editing – Fill). Use foreground color.

Right click on the mask and select Apply Layer Mask (Apply a layer mask).

3. Create a flowing paint effect.

Step 1

Load the file with vector shapes. Then go Edit – Presets – Preset Manager (Editing – Sets – Manage sets). On the menu Preset Type (Type of set) choose Custom Shapes (Custom shapes) and push the button Load (Download). In the window that appears, find the desired CSH file.

Step 2

Activate Custom Shape Tool (U) (Arbitrary shape), select the desired shape and add it on a new layer. Holding the Shift key, add a few more shapes on the same layer.

Click the right mouse button on the slice layer and select Rasterize Layer (Rasterize layer).

Use the brush and mask or eraser (E) to remove unnecessary parts.

Step 3

Holding down the Shift key, click on the layers with slips and text to select them. Then click on them with the right mouse button and apply Merge Layers (Merge layers). We call the resulting layer “The effect of paint.”

We right-click on the layer “The effect of paint” and select Convert to Smart Object (Convert to smart object).

Step 4

Duplicate (Ctrl + J) the “Paint Effect” smart object twice and call the copies “Paint Effect 1” and “Paint Effect 2”.

Apply the following layer styles to the “Paint effect” smart object, after setting Fill (Fill) by 0%.

Shadow: Blend Mode – Multiplication.

Inner shadow: Blend Mode – Overlap.

Internal luminescence: Blend Mode – Overlap.

Embossing / Bevel: Style – Inner bevel, Method – Smooth.

Color overlay: color # 0d0000

Step 5

Decrease Fill (Fill) of the “Paint Effect 1” smart object to 0% and apply the following layer styles to it.

Shadow: Blend Mode – Multiplication.

Inner shadow: Blend Mode – Overlap.

Internal luminescence: Blend Mode – Multiplication.

Embossing / Bevel: Style – Inner bevel, Method – Smooth.

Gradient overlay: Blend Mode – Overlap.

Gloss: Blend Mode – Multiply

Step 6

Decrease Fill (Fill) of the “Paint 2 effect” smart object to 0% and apply the following layer styles to it.

Inner shadow: Blend Mode – Multiplication.

Internal luminescence: Blend Mode – Overlap.

Embossing / Bevel: Style – Inner bevel, Method – Smooth.

Step 7

Using layer style Color Overlay (Overlay color) we choose paint color, instead of yellow you can set any other.

And we get this result.

Add additional drips of paint, filling them with other colors. This is the final result of the lesson on the effect of flowing paint.
